The dude was a beast on drums, my fave next to Chuck Biscuits. Seemed very intelligent who could have dug Bowie and Slayer at the same time. Yet very sensitive, handling a bunch of inner demons. Very common to the artists who speak their minds and bare souls because that is the only way they live and create. He was supposed to play with Eric Wagner's (ex-Trouble) Skull. RIP Steve, thank you for your music. Best punk rock and hardcore band ever! Amazing piece of interview, cheers guys, it was a real pleasure.
Slayer Hippy wrote one of the best ever PI songs "Hangover Heart Attack" . His drumming Made the songs much better!! "War all the time", and "feel the darkness" would sound a lot different without this man's amazing drumming talent. RIP Mr. Steve Hanford you were one of the all time greats.
I was labelmates on Alchemy with this band (I was in SACRILEGE BC) and a MAJOR fan before they signed to Alchemy, and these motherfuckers helped us get our masters back from Victor. Most real people, most understanding people, most fucked up peopler, but most TRUST WORTHY people in the world. I miss this guy so much.
THANX SO MUCH!! I'm a Big P.I. fan ever since my brother showed me 'pick your King' cover! I would play 'Feel the Darkness' in my car & my friends would say what's this shit!??? 'Put on.....?...Vanilla ice'. Two song later they were converted (not all, but most). Steve & I shared some same struggles with addiction. I'm glad we both FINALLY got it rite. RIP 'THE SLAYER HIPPY'
Hands down the best hardcore drummer ever. Well maybe next to Chuck Biscuits. I wonder if he had any idea how many young punk rock drummers he influenced. I was one of em. Nuff said, nuff respect RIP.
So cool to see a relatable musician that is so important to the scene that feeds my life. I think he may be gone now. RIP. I do know he is a crazy incredible musician.
Steve was too damned smart for PI and the Portland past. People want to be nostalgic, but he wanted to move forward. It is really unfortunate that certain people put him on mute , but that was convenient in the purpose of carrying on a legacy. He had more talent and vision than old Portland could handle and it is a shame he was not taken seriously at home, but he was worldwide. He was just getting started and his production skills were over the top and in demand. What really killed him was how people treated him. This bit should have been included in the documentary because it is the truth, but even old punks don’t want to hear the truth. It’s standing in line for an ice cream cone while trying to pick your king through emojis. Steve is dead and I am sure some people don’t care.
This really hits hard and I know you were closer to him than anyone. Me? I'm just a fan! The manner in which he was cancelled by the band and seemingly Jerry in particular stuck so badly in the craw. I think we all know that Steve pulled some stuff in darker days that maybe burned those bridges (FTD to Epitaph???), but a band so entrenched in fucked up business over the years surely could have found reparations somehow? Steve getting out of jail should have seen the door back into that band reopen (if he wanted it) and they could have been a true force again, rather than the sad Rebellion-fed greatest hits jukebox that saw out their final years
@@SEAHAM74 some people didn't want that door open . Long story , lot's of drama. Steve tried with an open heart and apologies . Too much bad blood with certain individuals and skewed versions of stories.
Poison Idea: the kings of punk! I can relate to every single word Slayer Hippy told us. He is my brother! This band was a part of my punk rock socialization. In over 35 years of my punk rock, I've organized many DIY concerts and festivals and kicked the shit out of cops and Nazis. I'm 52 now and still a mohawked punk. Peace, love and anarchy from Germany!
Such a truly amazing band. So much dirty sleazy Rock n Roll Fury. Happy that Jerry still is around, but the death of Pig and Slayer is a real downer, Anyone know what happened to Myrtle or Cocksman?
7th grade - Steve puking off Jessa's front porch - speed? - I'd barely even heard of speed at that point. Fernwood and Grant were breeding grounds for punk rock back then. Steve! Damn heroin...
Feel the Darkness is one of the best punk albums of all time.
Agreed
I love Blank Blackout Vacant.
It probably makes me unhip

Glad you posted this Mike. It’s a crying shame that Steve was only in the doc for a few minutes. He actually had something interesting to say .
My favourite drummer of the punk hardcore genre I was devastated at the time when I heard Steve Slayer hippy passed on beyond words.

wow, sooooo cool to hear him speak in this mature light!! RIP Steve, LOVE YOU!

That's awesome - "Party with God" is a ripper and was an early introduction to thrash for me!

Bomber from RKL needs to be in that convo.
Better than Chuck. Whether people want to admit it or not, and I speak as a drummer.
Earl from the bad brains is equally talented..or at least was
Great words. Thanks for sharing, Mike.
Best interview i have seen in a while

Pleasantly surprised by the progressive views from the pounder in that combo.
Sorry he died so young.
Love your channel, videos and your band.
Gotta say "Ballad Of A Pre-Op" is a song I wouldn't play to my trans friends... good to hear a pro LGBT statement from someone in the band.
loved this - rip slayer hippie
Much respect to Thee Slayer Hippy.....He graced my ears with Jugheads Revenge
Fantastic drummer, RIP
Missed!

I miss Steve we chatted for years before he passed away and even now i can’t believe he is gone.

I love this so fucking much
Did he and Jerry ever reconcile? I liked this clip, forward looking not nostalgic.
Nope
Such a truly amazing band. So much dirty sleazy Rock n Roll Fury. Happy that Jerry still is around, but the death of Pig and Slayer is a real downer,
Anyone know what happened to Myrtle or Cocksman?
Last I checked Myrtle (Charlie Nimms) was doing okay and still playing music here and there but that was a few years back.
Wish this was longer ,Steve definitely missed, what a loss. All my heroes are dying.
A true fucking king. So much love, my friend. RIP.
So sad to hear he passed he was a great engineer also the hard ons and many other s can attest to this peace and love lloydy
RIP Steve. Thank you.
Missing this guy
Steve was going to play on my new album…. I saw him a few weeks before he died.
Miss ya buddy

I toured with Rubella Ballet in the US and PI came up alot. Now after watching this I really fucking wish I met Thee Slayer Hippy what a dude x
Total f'in legend!
The king. Irreplaceable. Nobody has ever or will ever fill your shoes. Rest in peace brother. I fuckin love you.
TSH is better than Chuck B. Chuck never played at that velocity.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
[he best punk name ever
he sounds completely out of his mind here.
Drunk...lol
Love Poison Idea. Can’t stand this clown tho
He was a big part of their awesomeness though...
He was the BEST drummer they had from their best lineup years ...and he's also dead
