    my dear OTB,
    i have been trying to install Arch for quite some time now. something was always wrong. X did not start, Grub did not boot, whatever. Today was the first time i could say it was running. And that was with this SSH method via my imac. Thank you so much. i am really happy.
    But not too much praise without some criticism. On the first try i was sitting there (KDE) without a terminal / Konsole and without wifi. so i gave it a second shot reinstalled quickly and added a few things:
    pacman -S plasma plasma-desktop dolphin konsole and i think one or to more things for a smooth start.
    However, it is working really well now. So, thanks again.
    Best, Sternberg
    oh, and by the way, I am using Arch Linux

    Totally agree with your “start from scratch” approach. I have been able to practice installing Arch at least 50 times now (in a VM on my Linux Mint install) because hey, stuck in house for almost 2 months due to the human malware crap.

  • @temari2860
    @temari2860 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for the video. Arch install is commonly not really complicated, but there are some cases that might make it difficult. Like I've got an old usb network adapter in my pc, which iwd can't see, I managed to connect to a network eventually but it was a pain in the Arch. Other problems are: using a different bootloader(I tried rEFInd but never succeed. Anything apart from GRUB would require additional knowledge and endeavour from you), messing with non-standart Linux kernels and file systems can also cause some troubles, if you don't know exactly what you are doing.

    Thanks very much for this set of instructions, it makes installing Arch so much easier.
    Just one thing that I found to be a problem. On line 293 you have the command in your text file:
    "systemctl enable org.cups.cupsd.service".
    When I did this I was getting errors. After a bit of digging it seems that the service has been renamed. The command should now read:
    "systemctl enable cups.service".
    Also, I am not sure, but I think you might also need the commands:
    "systemctl enable cups.socket"
    "systemctl enable cups.path"
    Thanks once again for this video.

    • @engageintellect
      @engageintellect 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve just done the opposite 😂. In my experience arch tends to become more unstable the longer you use it. Eventually an update causes the system to break. I initially switched to Manjaro i3 for a couple of days to get a project done and had planned on going back to arch. It’s now been a few months and I’m still on manjaro i3 with zero issues.
      I love them both though, they’re both great.

    Really, the most complicated part about installing Arch "the arch way" is figuring out the drive partitions. And of course, that doesn't have to be complicated at all! Once you have done it a couple of times, you won't even need the build guide to do it!

    Maybe silly question, but with SSD's etc, isn't it wiser to create swapfile instead of partition, for the sake of saving SSD and not write the swap into the same fixed spot over and over and over (and let the disk itself manage the positioning of the file inside the bigger partition)?

    Wow this is timing.... :D I have been all day working on tweeking and testing my two scripts for arch. Eznix got me in the mood to be working on them. I have been playing with his scripts and mainly the new ones that are menu (kind of) driven but you do have to press the numbers, so it is TexT Based... Lol
    Then I seen you video and I want to thank you for the trick and information to do a install over SSH.
    I don't use ssh that much and never occured to me to do it that way. 14" verses 32", Yep ssh wins... Lol
    You mentioned that folks should use a VM to test installing on and that is true but I watched a bunch of video's and I followed one that Eznix made and it turned out Perfect the first time I ever done it, it was on this desktop about 7 months ago (real hardware)... I never did try installing in a vm, I just went for the gold! :-)
    Now days, it's kind of Old Hat as it were! The script does help a bunch too. I did write my own at first but like most folks, it is a mash of other folks. I like the ssh trick because of the copy and past! No more manual typing... Lol
    That's one thing I like about Eznix's latest progression or his script with menus.... Yep! I added my twist to them... :-D
    Thanks for the video and sharing with us. Stay Safe OTB...

      Having said that, I have got the gut-feeling that you would like playing StarCraft2. Basically a lot of dials and each dial influences the other dials. Portal also would be nice for you and much less risky in the sense of how much time it costs because you only play it once and maybe years later once more. Once you solved the puzzles there is not much replay-value until you forgot the puzzles years later.
