You can try spritzing the hair with water right before using gel or use castor oil under a gel without strong hold for better hold. There's also wet line gel, kinky curly gel, aunt Jackie flax seed gel, gorilla snot, creme of nature snot. Not sure of them health wise but if you're interested

I like the curly magic tho! It’s so nice, I haven’t tried the curl maker by Camille rose, I couldn’t bring myself to spend those duckets on the off chance that I don’t like it lol.
