I've got one in the barn, crazy power. I need to build a new building to clean and display my vintage bikes. It was a blast collecting over the past 30 years. My obsession 😍
Lay bike over on side to prime. Kick full throttle 1-2 slow, then one good whack. That bike is prone to detonation, only run fresh high octane fuel. Mix only what you need. 95 no lead race fuel is your friend. I loved my YZ490.
@@SinnerGarage I can hear the bike detonating. I have a 84 CR500. Use nothing other than VP C12 race fuel. Winter time mix with maxima super m and summer time mix with Castor 927. 32:1 will be the perfect mix
@@SinnerGarage watch Kaplan America TH-cam channel he specializes in big bore 2 strokes. Smart guy. That’s where my bike came from. He uses VP 110 and VP T2 but says to use C12 in his video
“Tons of power in the power bands”😂😂😂😂 I remember seeing the for sale adds back in the day. With people claiming they had the power band replaced. Or new power band just installed 😂😂 I grew up racing with my dad in this era. I remember his buddy Catfish always had these. My dad ran RM465s a few years. He let me ride on the track in practice a few times when I was 11 years old. I probably only weighed a 115 pounds. It was on a sand track and that thing was spinning the rear the whole time 😂😂
As a pretty handy 16yr old schoolboy motocrosser, i attended an official Yamaha test day in OCT 1978 here in UK. I was winning races all over the place that year on a 78 YZ125. After testing a 125 & a 250, i managed to convince the Yamaha rep to let me loose on the YZ465. To my surprise he did. Naturally i tried to ride it like you would a 125 as i knew no different. Result was i nearly had several BIG accidents, & after 2 laps they took it off me. Ive no idea why haha, Whats wrong with being totally out of control !!
Bought my 87' YZ490 as a crate leftover in 1990. Loved that bike since at the time I was 22 and only weighed a 160lbs! The "trick" to starting a YZ490 is to get it to TDC with the kick-start at the very top. Now here is the trick... DO NOT kick downward, lean forward over the bars and Mule-kick almost backward. No lie, 2nd and 3rd gear dead engine Hare scramble starts were no problem. Have a blast! I'm buying another one here in New England over the weekend now that Turkey day is out of the way. :-)
Definitely the trick is to push back when you kick over a 490. I've started a few stubborn 490s in my time and lift myself as high as I can off the seat and push my butt back and slam down hard on the back of the seat. Some times kicking it over 15 or 20 times like that to get one started. I always hold the clutch in too when I kick over a dirtbike I'm 6ft 5 so don't need a box for my left leg.
He heard the carb open and said heyyyy , where's the cool dudes cigarette to get it started for the cool part of dismantling the bottom end after he completely blew the blown out shock out more
lol You Guys crack me up, you have no idea what you have there. I've Never watched any of your other vids. I have a 490 and the you tube algorithm just put your vid up on my side bar. I enjoyed watching . Be carful and have fun.
Dude! Get a clue. Watch a video on how to kick-start a dirt bike. You are never gunna kick over an almost 500cc bike, with your fat arse sitting on the seat? Really?? Raise up on your left leg and stand. Then transfer your body weight onto your right then drop your entire weight pushing the kick start down! Evenly and quickly. Hold about 1/4 throttle on at the same time. Repeat till bike starts. Please.??
These require time and a little bit of money to run as intended by Yamaha. I have an '83 and I know what works and what doesn't. Actually hits pretty hard for a big bike..
I have yz465, never had anyone ride it and not smile, until it makes them turn white and scare the shit out of them, i hit a bird once with my helamet, RIP mocking bird, there is a reason y all front tires stay new and back tire gets wore out fast, my front tire is 20yrs old, been thru 2 back tires, be safe guys
I owned a yz400 and my friends had 490's My yz400 was the best wheely bike I ever owned. My opinion the 490 is the best dirt bike ever made. I can tell you guy's don't know to ride a two stroke dirt bike.
@@SinnerGarage yes and that is a very smart move on your part. These bikes are no joke. And when you said “I never had a 2stroke bike” i thought “ooh shit he is gonna get hurt”😱 Good too see you showed her some respect😉👍🏻
I got one in my backyard. Ported, decked, FMF Fatty, 38 TM mikuni. Since they came out with the 400, 425, 465, and the 490. It's so funny, to me, how young men start these bikes. 😅😂🤣👍 To ask this child to be a man is asking too much. They know nothing about these bikes or how to start them. Growing up in the Coachella Valley, if you didn't have an Open class dirt bike, you couldn't make the 5 me uphill sand wash. But it's very amusing for me to watch!!! 👍🇱🇷 This is not some street bike boy. This bike was never meant to be on trails, roads, or anything else that's not a closed circuit track. Yes a real racing motorcycle. Just saying....... PS Let the bike warm up first!!! 👎
She’s not running right can even hear through my phone check plug colour and needle height in the Carb sounds abit boggy that will be a rocket if set up right oh and for the peeps out their the cr 500 is the widow maker. :)
Srry but it isn't running right u really need to get it running right it sounds like it's flooding over . That bike shld lift the wheel off the ground at a quarter throttle in every gear. I've owned everything from an 80cc to a 500cc and my kids 80cc wld eat that alive the way it's running. Sorry just being truthful.
May be selling mine in the near future. 89 with new tires fresh fork seals, fresh carb rebuild, new grips, new throttle cable. Shoot me a message if interested. Cheers!

@SinnerGarage the trick to starting them, get to TDC, kick the crap out of it and barely touch throttle while it's spinning
Top dead center is 11 oclock.
You guys wasted ton of energy doing it all wrong.
Thank you for your help
Makes me cry when guys run these on the pavement and never come close to the power band. Please grow some balls and get in the dirt and open it up
Thank you
What did you pay for it
You should have started on a 125 or maybe a 250 those 490's are beasts for sure.
