This comes at a perfect time. For the last month my group has been working towards a pie making contest as seen in the module "Banquet of the Damned". I was looking for a creature to add to the finale, a sort of dollop of whipped cream on top. This fits the bill nicely, thanks!

The bou meringue: deals damage as a basic pie would, pulls the enemy closer to the pie fiend, as the sticky pie drags them along as it returns to the pie fiend’s hand
The peach cobbler: deals bludgeoning damage in a five foot sphere around the target as peach pits are sent flying everywhere
Key lime pie: Acting as a utility tool like the sinfully delicious pie, this pie, upon being bitten into, reveals a key that opens the nearest lock, I imagine the pie fiend giving it to a minion before sending them to steal something

Flies graveyard(a Scottish pie/pie adjacent pastry made with Corinthian raisins)
If the pie breaks via being stepped on or being thrown bursts into a cloud of flesh eating fireproof flies.
These flies will interfere with visibility and bite at peoples eyes, they are also extremely loud and try biting the inside of ears. Heavily messes with focus, visibly and isn't effected by most armour. Them being fireproof is mainly because they survived being baked and that they don't die to the fiends own fire attacks.
These can be used as traps, such as placed on the top of a door or just placed in advanced on the ground to mess with mobility.

The most important question when implementing this Fiend: Do you disguise it as a sweet grandma, or a spunky young chef?
I love the idea of a low level party doing a fetch quest for a certain ingredient for said NPC. Completely legit. Being rewarded with a Pie as a bonus. Only later, say mid level, to find out that NPC is a Pie Fiend and they are already deep in the Fiend's machinations.
Also the idea of this thing being your Warlock's Patron is amazing. Especially if the player character is also wanting to be a chef and you make the fiend a parody of Gordon Ramsey. A quite literal Hell's Kitchen.

A few scattered ideas, mostly for flavour:
    - The pie fiend's stomach can open up like a fleshy oven, revealing a heated chamber from where it pulls out the pies for its throwing attack, as well as where it generates the heat for its wall of heat attack. You could also extend this by giving the fiend a Swallow Whole type ability where it grapples a creature and shoves them into its stomach-oven, and while swallowed targets take fire damage instead of the usual acid.
    - A variant form of the pastrimp which appears as a pie, but upon getting close, it sprouts spider-like legs and begins to attack. This proposed form swaps out the flight speed for a climb speed, and could utilize a web-like attack where it sprays hot pie contents onto opponents, burning them and restraining them as the pie-stuff cools. Sure to upset someone in the party.

This is almost 1-for-1 of a winged tiefling barbarian character I made but haven't played.
He's a baker who has to adventure to supplement his income. Guild artisan background (greedy guild heads that hate the fact he donates the unsold pastries to charity every day).
In battle he wields a large wooden spatula (used in his oven) as a greatclub.
    His name is Raspberry Jam.
He's a Storm Barbarian (Fire element of course), and his rage turns him from friendly and jovial--- ---to smoldering silence that literally sets things around him on fire.

Just had a bunch of ideas go through my head. You may not have known about them, but you mentioning the recipe books reminds me that WotC actually has released official recipe books. What an absolutely huge missed opportunity by them (shocking, I know) to know have converted the monster and put it on D&D Beyond to promote the two official books: Heroes' Feast and Heroes' Feast 2: Flavors of the Multiverse. There's also the Dungeonmeister Cookbook, but that's not WotC official. But, those books could easily be what the party strive to obtain to give the pie fiend.
Also, Deborah Ann Woll released a 10th level cooking adventure last November called, Heroes’ Feast: Saving the Children’s Menu. It's directly tied to the Flavors of the Multiverse cookbook. The adventure tasks the party with gathering ingredients for magical noodles called, Kender Stumblenoodles, which is a real recipe in the book.
A now want to build a pie fiend warlock with the Chef feat, and the UA only Gourmand feat. Given the fiend warlock has a lot of fire spells, that's perfect. Go Pact of the Blade for the cooking knife. Likely go human or custom lineage for the bonus feat.
But, the main thing rattling around in my brain is the Care Bears episode, Grams Bear's Thanksgiving Surprise, where Grams Bear is having a pie war with an old human arch nemesis, Sour Sam, who bakes crabby apple pies vs. Grams Bear's happy apple pies. Highly recommend watching before doing an adventure with the pie fiend.

So, after reading a lot of comments - One demon with several outposts and several disguises :)
    1. "The Nice Grandma" One bakery, located in an area full of half-breeds, is in a competition for the souls of the soviets with a witch who makes dream cookies.
    2. "Young Elam" otherwise a restaurant where he works and collects his warlocks, a place where he can be -honest- in his action. Sending people to bring exotic items. The story around his recipe book.
It is also possible for him to invite the characters to be judges in a competition between a night witch and a beach giant around an angel cake [the highest judge is a brown dragon]
    3. A factory store in the dream world, a place in the style of Charlie and the chocolate factory where he also makes chocolate shells and other strange creatures [which are completely dreams and not souls baked with a little glamour].
    4. An "aging dwarf" runs a bakers guild and a [legitimate] baking school in the city, sends people to hunt down bandits who interfere with trade, sends characters to find ingredients for monsters and gives them baked goods as gifts, runs a drug empire from eating deserts with several generations of family members.
In all places he has love and lust for humanity at the same time

  • @KingAce0

I love the idea of this monster, I can't help but imagine a Teen Titians Mother Mae-Eye/ Cuphead Saltbaker situation wear the pie friend uses their pies to drug like effects to force the party into a deal were they have to go out and find a "special ingredients", more pure souls, for their new recipe that will give the fiend enough power to create a mini domain on the material plain, Aka Candyland. And only after the party completes this task are allowed to either join the Bakery or try to fight the fiend to undo their mistake. Bonus point if the pie fiend uses the King of the party kingdom to carry out their plan and frames the well meaning but creepy/ evil looking advisor in since they were the only one that saw through the fact the the royal baker has been acting different lately. Hell the party could even choose to side with the advisor after finding out and work to find away to expose the Fiend before it's to late.

The second you mentioned adding spells to this monster, a hilarious idea occured to me. Give it Catapult, this way it can launch the pies even further, make them deal even more damage, plus you could then use it for all kinds of comedic (or serious) purposes. The random pie in the face gag could be a hidden Pie Fiend that just randomly catapultes pies in peoples faces, or an entire backline artillery of Pie Fiends all hurling pies like cannonballs down into a city, or onto an approaching army. Watch as your ranks fall into complete disarray as they are burned, chilled, and baked into delicious pies!

Now to figure out how pie half-fiends would work.
Cus with pie fiends being inherently a pretty sociable type of entity, as not even their demonic nature can overcome the inherent community building values of cooking not only to feed yourself but to feed other people. I expect pie fiends, as with many other artisanally inclined beings, would be especially susceptible to seeking artistic validation for their craft and be more willing to make the concessions it takes to maintain a community in order to get that ego boosting validation. Making for a bit more unique a cult situation around pie fiends compared with regular demonic entities, where it can more become about joining up with the fiend in pursuit of a shared goal of cooking rather than the fiend centering themselves for worship.
Like developing artists to be the best they can be takes investment and support and protection, and pie fiends might have to face this reality more than most of their evil aligned peers due to the sheer practical necessities of cooking. And what it takes to have more than one person working a kitchen.
I could see this leading to a pie fiend tending to accumulate community around them for more than just exploitation like livestock, but for the pie fiend to invest in and basically build artistic enclaves of cooks so it can have peers who share in its interests. And thus doing stuff like developing relationships with especially talented and ruthless bakers of shorter lifespan humanoids, which then spirals out into absurd Italian mafia style crime family's performing a criminal activities like fencing, money laundering, drug trading, and then moving into loan sharking with the wealth that gets accumulated. But which much like those kind of mafias, always having a very strong cultural affiliation with and loyalty to their families food and recipes, and thus developing some surprisingly strong familial bonds and a pretty strong sense of culture from teaching each other to cook and eating together regularly.
Like it could even be part of the reason why pie fiends could be so rare. Not only because high ranked demons probably wouldn't want to give up their cooks to go travel the realms, but that pie fiends are often too much in rivalry with one another in a "too many cooks in the kitchen" sense, and if given the chance often quickly dilute their bloodlines among sociable and shorter lived, but technologically advanced enough for advanced cooking styles races in order to basically create a cooking fandom with themselves at the top rather than creating more pie fiends they would be in competition with.
With this in mind, I expect a humanoid with pie fiend ancestry would probably blend in much more with their non-fiend parent's race practically from the first generation, either simply looking normal, or quickly developing a milder form of the alter self ability. But they would probably grow to be taller than average with a heavier build. So potentially, becoming kinda like stereotypical batman style mafia goons.
So like if you get this crime family with a bunch of huge knuckle cracking goons who are fiercely loyal to their family and like to sit around bragging about how incredible grandmas dumplings or whatever are to the other criminals. Like that could just kinda be what happens when someone manages to get a pie fiend smitten with em through making like, just the best lasagna or something.
Plus like, opening up a bakery as a genius baker is a pretty sure fire way to get the interest of eligible bachelors and bachelorettes in the restaurant business.
Starting a family business is often just kinda part and parcel with the practical necessities of restaurant ownership. So why not settle down and bake cupcakes with a bunch of chubby little half-demon spawn?
Though that would also be a double edged sword for pie fiends, because if they invest in family and community, they're gonna be less willing to destroy their investment in pursuit of other goals. Like a farmer unwilling to reduce the quality of their produce out of pride for their craft regardless of if they could make more money with reduced quality. Which could also make them much sneakier and harder to find out in the wild, as communities have a tendency to naturally temper pie fiends goals and expectations by slowly incorporating them into the community, such that their desire for baking often becomes at odds with their desire to spread evil. As sacrifices must be made to maintain a communities culinary ecosystem.
And they can often gradually acclimate a pie fiend to making these sacrifices. Like sure they COULD take that guys soul, but if they did, there wouldn't be a traveling merchant to transport the grapes from the vineyards to the town to produce the jams used for pastries, and it could take weeks for a replacement to be found to make the journey! Is one soul worth cutting off access to their baking ingredients for?? If anything, it would be MORE in their self interest as a baker to protect the vineyard and the transportation of the grapes to the city to be processed into jam.
And then b4 ya know it ya got a pie fiend who is in too deep with their restaurant business and running an agricultural mafia style protection racket where they're sending out big burly goons to rip through bandit camps who dared to try and steal the fancy carefully cultivated grain from one of the farms under the pie fiends protection.
