  • The national flower of Chile is Lapageria rosea also known as the Chilean Bell Flower and 'Copihue'.
    Although this beautiful flower looks like a tropical plant, it actually grows in the cool mountain areas in Chile, this means it is easy to grow in cool to temperate climates, as long as you know how.
    The waxy flowers come in rose pink to red and even white, so variety is available.
    In this video Gilberto Ceroni explains the soil and moisture requirements of this beautiful plant, and demonstrates how to plant and care for them in your own garden.

      Hello Alexander, Gilberto has given me enough information to grow them here in the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria. We have one with beautiful pure white flowers when in flower. It would be our favourite climbing plant. Must be amazing to see them in the native habitat.

      It certainly is. Well you need to go to Chili, near ucon you can see them for example. And a bit farther south you get Philesia magellanica, For example in the Parque Nacional Alerce Andino.

    Here’s my biggest question - salt? What’s the deal? I’ve never, ever heard of watering with salt water and I’ve read everything I possibly can on it. Please could you explain the point? Many thanks.

      Gilberto refers to Seasol (NOT sea salt). Seasol is a liquid seaweed fertiliser which encourages new root growth. If you turn on the closed captions you can read this. Hope that explains things. If not let us know.

      johnny A thank you! I couldn’t possibly imagine why a salt solution was being poured, successfully, onto a Lapageria! It’s obvious now - but a couple of growers over here in the UK were scratching our heads! 😆

    Will these grow in Miami?

      They do not like constant temps over 85 F daytime, or 65 F night. However, you could give them a try if you have a cool position, good air flow.

      Too hot.
      Best place for them in the US is northern California/Southern Oregon.

    I bought seeds, but I haven't been sprouting. Why is this? Does it need any tricks? Seeds come from stale seeds of gardening companies.

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Old seeds can be very poor at germinating, fresh seeds can also be slow. The seeds need temperature changes, from warm to cold so I would not give up yet, Put the seed tray aside, outdoors and hope for the best. Yes some companies sell old seeds, and some plants will not germinate well from old seeds.

      @唐黎-j2n 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      From warm to cold? Not cold to warm? Still the translation is wrong. . . . ?

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What we mean is they need to have a temperature that changes, like summer to winter, however not freezing.

    • @唐黎-j2n
      @唐黎-j2n 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, thank you for your answer. I put it in the refrigerator now. I have already lost 5 seeds. The rest I have put in the refrigerator. I observed it constantly leaking mucus. Is this normal?

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, that sounds like the seeds are rotting.....
