    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey dude, great question! You have a few options:
      Do this and weather per layer (popular with SF airbrushing terrain, looks cool, but a bit unrealistic)
      Do this way more gradually top to bottom
      Do gradually, but also do things like dark towards recesses, e.g. either side of pillars, etc, providing variation in more than one way, looks fairly realistic.
      #3 is my fav, not too hard, looks great, you can also add weathering, which I am a real fan of.

    I think that lava bases (maybe in conjunction with previously mentioned Salamander color scheme), and flesh specifically for smaller models (witch aelves is what i have in mind) would be interesting. I know the smaller you get the harder these techniques are to apply, but it'd be interested to see what you can achieve. Can't wait for my series D to arrive and get started on my marines!

    A great way to get a more vivid and natural result is the following
    - one thin coat of a nice brown, for example a mix of dryad bark and mournfang brown, just so that you can see the black undercoat shine through. Let it dry
    - Drybrush with the same brown
    - Add a good amount of screaming skull to the remaining brown color, getting a creamy type colour. Drybrush everything, especially the raised areas and edges
    - Repeat this with only screaming skull
    - Drybrush with white scar for the final highlights on the raised areas and the bricks as done at 09:44

  • @davidcook3922

    Great video, I struggle mixing the paints and normally just go the same way as this with individual colours. I'd be interested in seeing maybe a castle wall with realistic stone work mixing up the colours of the bricks together with weathering or lichen as you mentioned in this video. I find if i use a green shade that it comes out with quite hard edges

    Some things I’d like to see, and I know others have said this one, but OSL would be really good! As well, I would really like to see a video about your approach to drybrushing and stippling, most videos just tell you to keep things as dry as possible and then you end up with a dusty powdery look, whereas you wet the brush and keep things looking smooth and buttery. A video that explains your approach and how it differs would be really helpful I feel.

    Great video as always. I definitely learn a bit more about the technique in every video. One thing I have been wondering about is the texture palette. What is it made out of? It looks like MDF maybe? Also, I noticed on your website that it says to prime the texture palette, but yours doesn't look like it's primed. Is it clear coated, or is it not actually necessary to prime them?

    Are there any good options for stone mottled with various colors interspersed?
    Seems like most examples come across go very wet using a bunch of washes.
    Also are there any adaptations in technique suggested for working with much larger terrain pieces?
    Also any magic/tech portal effects would be great to see.

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100%, washes is an efficient way to do it, but if you want to avoid them you can do it by mottling a couple of mid-tones, with the same base and highlight you'll get variation but also coherency! If you're going bigger it just takes a bit longer :) perhaps airbrush or use another brush for the base-coating to save your XL some mileage!

    This is fantastic, been waiting on this since the last one :) Thank you!
    Question: For a slightly bluey moonlit look, what do you think is best? Dark blue-greys at the start and then mix a faint amount of light blue with your whites (like baharroth blue)? Or you reckon this method but a final light blue glaze would get the same effect?

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question dude, I think there's a couple of approaches:
      1.) Exactly the same, drop some blue ink in each
      2.) (Interesting one) Deep blue base (incubi darkness/Deep Blue), then normal, but then highlight with a light blue white

    • @ghoxxalla
      @ghoxxalla 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArtisOpus Amazing, thank you! I'll give both a try! I wonder if you can replace the blue ink with a light brown one for a victorian storybook sepia look.. will be a productive sunday :)

    This inspires me to do a black & white horror film like style for an army. I think Deepkin from AoS would make for a good non-tradition creepy collection, like a Lovecraft film that was made for the silent era of film.

      Hey dude, you can, smaller brush, a little more moisture (this makes the paint less opaque, a little 'softer').
      Bright yellow is perfect, if you check our recent yellow terrain video it's very similar, just on a smaller scale :)

    • @andrewamann2821
      @andrewamann2821 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I recall correctly, the texture palette is mdf, or similar, so washing wouldn't be an option, but it's not too likely to get slicked with paint, given how it's used... But replacement, should it be needed, should be inexpensive.

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rather than washing I just re-prime black :) (this is great, as you can test if your colours cover over black well on it, if they don't... you find ones that do ;)).
      I tend to use 'fresh' ones because they screw with recording less, however I prefer a heavily used/primed one, myself.

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's MDF, if you go super heavy then you can purchase a replacement (to keep the 'sharp edges' on the design for testing for miniatures, however there is a useful beauty when you really build up a load of different colours and textures. You get the ability for accidental learning then, when you put your wash over last week's metallic drybrush testing, and discover something amazing :)

    Chaos Black is not a primer. In Australia it cannot legally be called a primer but Army Painter, badger and Vallejo primers can legally state they are primers. Chaos Black is not a primer!
