I found my dad gave my 1st console, My 7800, to other family members when we finally got a Genesis. 30 Years later my cousin & I were going thru stuff while he was moving, in a box with his Colecovision was my 7800; Torn Proprietary Power Supply & all! It now sits on my desk at home, I really want a EU Controller for it. Always seen them in the Posters in the US. Great Job on the Repair! I would like to find a Recreated Chrome Badgeplate, US/EU to get that final finish
I really enjoy my 7800. Some of the arcade conversions are quite nice! It is not a very expensive system to collect for, with only two or three games being expensive. The ability to play 2600 games is just fantastic!
A bit more than just 2 to 3. A few third party games like Kung Fu master, Rampage and Double dragon are around the 60-80 mark lose and late 1990 releases like Motor Psycho, Fatal Run, Mean 18 golf, Ninja Golf, Midnight Mutants, Basketbrawl, Commando and Ikari warriors are 100-300 when they actually come up.
One of my favorite systems! I got one at a garage sale with a bunch of games in the early 90's, and I've had a lot of fun with it. I haven't gotten any modern enhancements or flash carts for it, I'm afraid, but I can highly recommend "Food Fight", as well as essentially all of the system's arcade conversions. It's a pity that Atari shelved it for two years before deciding to release it after all; it would have done better earlier on, and it deserved to do so.
Very nice score! What's cool with the PAL 7800 is the build in Asteroids game when it's powered on without a cartridge. There are a lot of really good games for the 7800 not to mention some homebrews. P.S. I would recommend doing a composite video mod to your 7800.
I sold 7800's at Kmart in Canada. They were not popular. The NES was the king then. A few people bought them, and with in a few days returned them for a NES.
I've been told Motor Psycho is one of the best games on the 7800 - I recently picked it up and really need to get around to UAV modding my console so I can check it out. So good to see another old Atari brought back from the dead and I'm loving the ingenuity with the tact button modification!
Agreed, Motor Psycho is a pretty good game on the 7800. I also really enjoy Dark Chambers. I highly recommend doing a UAV mod to your 7800. It makes things look so good!
Great video :) Appreciated the pr0n music whipping the plastic off.. I remember seeing them frequently at Tandy shops heavily discounted when I was younger. Like you though I was obsessed with the SMS at the time. :)
Great video, very glad you managed to get it working. The 7800 is a great console. I did an AV mod on mine a long time ago and it was well worth it. I believe that The 8-Bit Guy did a video on the mod. I can recommend "Dark Chambers", great game for the 7800.
My power connector broke on one of the 7800's I own, and swapped out the special power connector with a jack that fits the 2600 power supply, and the system works great. You can run the 7800 on 9 volts.
Congrats on both the Ataris, Jase! I remember Big W selling the 7800 in the early '90s (my first job was at Big W which is why I remember seeing them there). I also remember it was cheaper than the SMS II and NES, but didn't sell anywhere nearly as well as either of those two. I couldn't tell you the exact prices, but it was probably around $70 when the SMS II was $99.
I am very impressed with your tech know how and great instinct on the repairs. Fun fact about the overlooked 7800; it was developed by General Computer Corp. The company known for their enhanced Super Missile Attack for the arcade game Missile Command and more famously developing Ms Pac-Man as an enhancement board for Pac-Man
Perfect timing! I was just looking for a video to watch in the background while making a bracket to hold a new power supply in my Apple II clone, and this one just showed up!
One way of getting better output than RF out of the 7800 is finding a SECAM model, which came with RGB+Composite output in place of RF out. The video quality is not the greatest but still a lot better than RF. Also, works with an Atari ST SCART/RGB cable.
The 7800 isn't nearly as common in the US as the 2600 is. I wanted one back in the day, but my dad's rationale was, if it plays 2600 games, just keep playing your 2600... (which was actually a Coleco Gemini since he was quite frugal)
For video try the UAV mod. Flash carts are somewhat limited but you should be able to pick up a Concerto cart still and I believe Saint has a cart in development. The homebrew games on the 7800 are excellent and the reason that I keep my 7800s
You have to get Ninja Golf. Well.. for the name really. I wonder if the switches just get carbon buildup or something? Would be amazed if they all failed from use.
Oh yeah dood. Now we're talking. I just did my 2600 Jr. - crystal clear video on modern TVs. Be sure to replace the 7805 with a TSR-1 2450. Green chicklet caps can be replaced with nice tiny TDK film caps. You can also remove the RF box entirely and replace it with a tiny composite mod board off eBay for around $10. Lots of sellers make these boards and they work great. Console5 has them along with complete "refresh" cap kits. You can then pump the composite into an HDMI converter.
i did not know Asteroids was the defalt game on PAL version ! there is a Concerto multi-cart , requiring a POKEY chip. there is also a RetroHQ multi-cart in the works that also allows RGB output ( using a Sega Megadrive connector ) => so many awesome Homebrews for this abandonned console

I used to have a Atari 7800 and enjoyed it very much, despite the ear screeching sound chip.

13:36 did TH-cam glitch and send anyone else to a Techmoan video? Just me?

I owned one of these as a kid. Early 80’s. Then a C64. Great machines. This is the exact machine I had.

Motor Psyco is also one of the most expensive Atari 7800 games. The last time I checked it was 50 dollars but this was back in 2013.
Great video :) Appreciated the pr0n music whipping the plastic off.. I remember seeing them frequently at Tandy shops heavily discounted when I was younger. Like you though I was obsessed with the SMS at the time. :)

Glad they worked out!
Perfect timing! I was just looking for a video to watch in the background while making a bracket to hold a new power supply in my Apple II clone, and this one just showed up!
You can almost certainly do the same kind of RF modulator bypass as you find done on the Spectrum. Might be worth a look to see how feasible it is
Joel Denyer's theoretical reply: "Hey, that stuff was stolen in 199X! Thanks for fixing it for me!" 😁😁
Yeah I never saw the 7800 either, not until the mid 90s when I saw a handful on runout at some store in country NSW. But never brand new!

Nice. Sounds like my French SMS
I'd really like if you'd perform a video output modification!

“But it’s August?” Lol. Tried to explain this very thing to my son the other day lol.
For video try the UAV mod.

Awesome pickups Mr. Lurch, might want more and future proof both systems if the 2600 is working cheers.

Could you post the part number for the replacement switches?
Jaycar: SP0608
I'd love to see a follow up video if you decide to mod this one.
there are plans afoot.
When I first saw your outfit, I was wondering if there was some kind of Atari heist afoot.
Strap: It doesn't matter where you attach it to your body, so put it on one of your ankles instead! That way it's out of the way.
Awesome ...i love my 7800

Nice job 👌🏻
Another microbee repair would be great, I guess this is only for Australian audiences.
There is one in the works, just waiting on parts.
Awesome - now you just need a 5200 ;-) Great pick up, I'd be curious how much you got it for.
you mean a 5200?
@@GORF_EMPIRE How can you have 464 subscribers and zero content?
@@GManmcaoidh There is plenty of content but it's not public.
@@GORF_EMPIRE Thank You for explaining.

The cartridge shroud can be removed by 2 tiny screws in the back side of the board. 7800 suffered from this issue.
Here’s a video showing a video upgrade for the 7800: th-cam.com/video/VaNycakIUmU/w-d-xo.html
The exact one I was going to link!
Maybe the previous owner was related to Grant Denyer?
Flashcarts are still something not readily available, hope that will change at one point.
Kinda remember these in Kmart (Aus) on the same shelf as the Master System. At the time, I thought it was just a 2600 in a new shell. :/
Tactile switches are most likely the culprit on the 7800. Easy fix
Damn dude that plastic removal with the 70s porn music cracked me up. 😆🤣 hope you do more Atari vids. Great video and thanks for making them!
Yes please more 2600! The console of my childhood and still in my possession! 💪😀
Oh hello
Well I was going to recommend contacting CAR, but I'm too late...
Hey mate, the writing on the screen is two fast, you can not read it without going back and pausing it.
Like your videos.
Please let the text stay longer in the videos. I can't read English that fast. :)
The really quick titles are generally just me taking the piss out of myself/making a joke - so you're not missing out on anything important.
