Homemade Custom Truck Camper

- This is a quickish video giving a look at my custom truck camper that I designed and made myself, with help from some with the heavy things and help with planning of the technical things. I had been toying with the idea of building a camper before I got my new truck and after looking at what I could buy both new and used I couldn't find anything that really fit my needs. The ones that came close were also not cheap close to 30K. So, I foolishly decided to build my own. It was a fun process, frustrating at times but very rewarding. Through the process I decided to splurge more on quality windows, and over engineered the electrical for possible future upgrades (AC). We also got a nice mattress along with custom cushions made by VstarButtons. I used wood because it is readily available and easy to work with and didn't require special tools I didn't already have. I looked at how commercial campers are made with similar materials and also watched videos of other people's campers they made themselves and mish mashed all the things that I learned together to come up with my own creation. One person in particular that gave me a lot of inspiration on techniques, especially the exterior choice I made was Dave@EndgameCampers . He has made many truck campers that all really unique. Hope you enjoy.
That bunk set-up is genius - I've wanted something like that for when my kids come with - but don't want it tying up extra space, I've thought about folding them up before, but removing it and using as a back rest is awesome - well done!
Thanks. I thought of folding it up but didn't like it covering window and taking up shelf space. Plus if I want to I can pull it out completely.
Nice job, one of the Best home built campers that I’ve seen!
Wow, thanks!
Love that truck bed liner. Wonder if I can do that to my rv been thinking about it for a while n now I see this ❤ this is amazing.
EXCEPTIONAL home made design. Can't buy what you build yourself not even for $30 grand. Nicely done brother!
Thanks a bunch!
Best use of space I have seen in the many TH-cam videos I have watched. Inspiring work.
Thank you so much.
Kile, Thanks again for the information. I want to make the camper as light as possible but strong at the same time. I have looked into filon as well and it looks easy enough to apply but I am afraid of the delamination bubbles forming over time. If the pros can't make it stay glued with thousands of pounds of pressure I doubt I can either! I am considering the staple route as they leave a small hole and it is nearly impossible to pull them out. I will continue learning more about the build process and hope to get started.
Well made! Looks like you spent a fair bit of time planning everything out. Well done. Hope you have some great adventures in it.
Thank you kindly. I did. Spend some time thinking and planning. I built every piece of lumber on SketchUp to figure out exactly how everything would fit in it. Took about a month and a half to render it. Then I made blueprints from it. Still changed on the fly while I was building it when things changed.
Best diy truck camper I’ve seen!
Glad you like it!
Good job Kile! Plain to see you thought this project out thoroughly starting with your unique requirements. Hope to see this rig utilized in future adventure videos!
Excellent use of space. This will be a great resource for the build I’m planning on doing for my first gen tundra I just got
Good luck!
very nice work. Seen 500 of these videos and yours stands out.
Wow, thanks!
Very nice build and design. Just one safety note...I hope you do recognize and have figured out a way to get out of your camper should someone purposely or accidentally close your truck bed's tailgate while you're in your camper, therein blocking the door from opening ?
I like it❤😊
😍👍👏
I think you could get a patent on that hideaway bunk system!
Excellent job you’ve done, and I like how you did the bondo work… that bondo separates your build from some really crude ones I’ve seen, including some factory built ones. 👍👍🇺🇸
Thank you very much. Adapted from some other ones I saw on youtube.
That was pretty cool. Nice job
weight weight weight 55mph 55mph 55mph ???? Hows that all holding up
Great build and I’m thinking of making one myself . But I do love your bunk idea as Iv young teenage boys to think of and this ideas great 👌
Hopefully some Joker never closes that tailgate when you're in there.
This is by far the Best diy truck camper I have ever seen. Congratulations! It looks great too. This has so much functionality you are going to really enjoy. Nice job 👍
Wow, thanks!
Awesome job just what the doctor ordered.
Very Nice Build! Thanks for sharing video and ideas. :)
Thanks for the compliment.
I love it and it's very well thought out. I kind of would like to build one. Not including labor, was there quite a savings over buying a factory made camper? I had a couple back when they were reasonably priced, but I can't justify spending what they want for them these days. I know you probably have a lot into things like the solar and cooler fridge, etc. I'm just kind of wondering what a guy could build a shell for? Could you give a ballpark figure on that, please?
to buy a new one with similar features probably would have been 20k give or take. Probably more when you take into account all the electrical components I have in mine. So, subtracting electrical and subtracting the custom cushions and other upgrades it would have cost around 8k or less.
Two questions.
1. What did you use for four corner "lifts" to load/unload.
2. How did you secure this into your truck bed? Did you use turnbuckles to the OEM bed hold down points or something else?
1. Reico Titan convertable lifts. (can be upgraded to electric)
2. Yes turn buckles made for campers to the OEM bed hold down points.
The best diy camper build I've seen. Bed options are pure genius.
Thanks, one of the reasons I wanted to build one, I needed it to sleep 4 adults.
Really awesome camper! 😎 👍
Qu’est ce que t’as m’y comme finition extérieur?
Wow! That came out great. Still toying with the idea of building on for my 1500 short bed. It's hard to tell the sizing of lumber. Is it mostly 1X stock? What thickness is the exterior plywood? Love the marine grade bed liner idea! Any idea what it weighs? Sorry for all the questions but this has got me pumped up. Haha!
Thanks, 2 x 2 and 2 x 4s all ripped from 2x10s to ensure squareness. 1/4 birch plywood for plywood. it weights 2000 lbs. look at the camper weight sticker in the clove box for what your truck can handle. I know my previous 1500 was around 700lb. look at Endgame channel for some light camper builds.
Thanks again! I'll check my glove box to be sure. I've watched so many different videos on builds and I think I follow endgame.
Looks amazing. Well thought out plan. Make shure that electrical compartiment has good ventilation, otherwise your electrical components will not last very long. Chargers and inverters produce a lot of heat.
Looks good 👍
Awesome! Nice and simple!
Thanks
This is very tidy. Would love to be able to get more info and pics on building this. Really good work.
My compliment excellent Bill outstanding
Thank you.
What kinda of marine grade truck bed liner did u use?
Durabak 18
Thus guy is a perfectionist for sure ..ocd for sure lol ...
Nice build did u do all the electrical yourself
Thanks, and yes.
Well, that is right on track with mine. I started at 84" wide but am now at 88" and a ceiling height of 6'6" I was planning an E/W double bed over the cab but am now going with an E/W queen. What dimension of lumber did you use for framing, and what thickness of plywood did you use on the various parts? Did you nail, staple, glue the skin on? Any problems with the seams shrinking and leaving a void? I plan to start mine in a couple weeks if I can get the materials. Thanks again for the reply
Queen size is nice, double would have saved some weight though, but hard to beat the comfort when it's me and the wife. I ripped 2x2 and 2x4 out of 2x8 lumber to ensure straightness and thickness. I used 1/8 faux wood paneling on the inside (nailed/stapled) and construction adhesive. The framing I used pocket screws and glue. I built the walls with the inside paneling then erected them and used construction adhesive and screws to join the corners. I used 1/4 birch plywood on exterior after wiring and insulation. I used construction adhesive and screws for that as well. I wished I would have used less screws and for the exterior and used large staples. The many... many.... many screws (over 1,000) I used required a bunch of bondo work to level out the divot the screws created, but it helps ensure seams will likely not shrink enough to cause failure (that's the hope). The seams were also bondoed. Don't throw the option of filon fiberglass as a viable option for skinning. Good luck and enjoy the process. Despite some frustrations I really enjoyed undertaking a project of this magnitude.
Looks great! Looks heavy. And about 6 inches too tall for my liking. Don't get me wrong, I'd love the headspace in the bedding area, but man top heavy and in a wind.
Thanks, she handles great even at 80mph. weights 2k. Im 6'1" and needed the space to fit everything I need. plus my friends are even taller. Really the only think I would do different is work to make it lighter and a few inches shorter in the nose. but I love the space and my truck handles it just fine.
Kile, Excellent job! I am in the process of designing and building a camper for my truck and my ideas are almost identical to your build! Do you know how much the camper weighs and what is the headroom, overall width and height? I used to take my tailgate off with my last camper and it was a total pain! My build will all fit inside, no wires to disconnect, no storage, no dents and scratches on the tailgate anymore! Thanks for sharing the video. I would like to discuss your construction sometime.
Thanks, it weights 2000 lbs. the interior height is just under 6' 7". exterior width is 87".
If you get the new tailgate retrofitted you wont need the steps. The newer tailgate has the middle part to come down
I thought about that..$$$$$. Wish I would have selected that option when I bought the truck. Although I don't know if that would work while I have my boat trailer hooked up.
@@kilewesterman2339 probably not with the boat trailer
That is EXACTLY what I want for my '08 Tundra. How can I get you to make me one or ??
Pay a crap ton of money. Lol. Thanks
J’aimerais que tu explique ton système électrique svp comment tu recharge capacité des batterie et a quoi sert ton électricité merci
It recharges by solar panel on top. battery has 100 amp hours of capacity. electric for the lights, fans, recharging electrical equipment, etc.
As tu un frigidaire ou une glacière ?
Looks very nice, thanks for sharing. Very tall…How’s it do at freeway speeds?
Never had a truck camper before, so I have nothing to compare it to, but so far no issues. I have had it just over 75mph.
Great Job! Amazing bunk stow-away! Doing research for my own 1/2 ton build. Questions for you, how has the tuck bed coating handled the wood expansion on the corners? Can you share the brand you used? Did you ratchet strap to the frame or the bed holddowns? Any idea on what it weighs? Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, the way I framed it and used a bunch I mean a bunch of screws along with a lot of construction adhesive and finishing it off with bondo, plus plywood typically has less expansion contraction than solid wood. So no signs of failure so far. And I don't expect there to be, but time will tell. My fall back if the corners do fail to add trim like a normal camper. I used durabak 18 marine liner. It is tied down with truck camper turn buckles to the bed tie downs. There are access codes in the tub part of the camper. Capri campers is where I got that idea from. This one would be a bit heavy for a 1/2 ton. It weighs 2000 lbs. Look up endgame campers. He has built some really lite campers. Good luck.
That build has come out all-some !!! Very nice job sir !!!
Nice job
Thanks!
How much to have one made
Too much my friend. We could start talking at 25K.
That's fn mint. 😮😊
Thanks!
Impressive !! THX for posting ... you gave me many good ideas for the one I am building .
Thanks, and good luck.
This is a really awesome build. I was thinking of how to do a bunk style setup as well. This is a really fantastic method.
Thanks. I thought about it for a long time.
Nice, simple yes but functional.... love how you made those bunk bed.... great idea...
Thank you.
Very good job.
Thank you!
Thanks Jerry. That is the plan. Can't wait to use it.
Very nice. What specific plywood do you use on the outside?
Thanks, I used 1/4 birch plywood.
A cool idea for steps to get in may be to slide them under the camper. Put a little hatch access in the middle, between your framing, and you could slide them in and out. It would keep them stored out of the way.
Thanks, that's a good Idea. The solution I am using now is a three-step ladder which stores nicely in the closet area.
Nice job! Got some good ideas from you, im in the process of building one myself !
thanks, good luck
Nicely done I'm thinking something close to your idea
Go for it!
I have had three different truck campers that’s a really nice design.
Thank you
Love it
Thanks!
Great build brother, Thanks for sharing
Thanks!
Weight?
2K
Hope nobody shuts that tailgate while your sleeping. You'll get to try it out for a long time 😂
Lol, don't worry I planned for that too. One the tailgate is open by key fob.
That's a really good design in general, but super smart bunk system with the dinette.
Thanks, it took a bunch of staring at it and thinking to come up with what would work best.
one of the best designed diy camper builds i have seen on u tube very nice thanks for posting
Thank you very much!
Nice layout of the lower bunk and seating setup.
Thanks!
What brand is the bed liner paint you used?
Durabak 18 Marine
That bunk is a great idea for stowing away. Good job!
Thanks!
I am designing my camper now, and I absolutely love your diversity! Many redundantcies! 👍
Thanks!
Do you happen to know how much it weighs?
2000 lbs
2000 lb
@@kilewesterman2339 thank you
