I have a theory that may explain his behavior (but absolutely does not excuse it). The show constantly reinforces that he often resorts to denial to distract from his problems (hence why he has been saying 'I ain't too worried about it A LOT this season) and considering how the stakes with the devil have been much higher alongside with all that time in jail I think he's resorting to reckless behavior so that he doesn't have to face the consequences of his actions. Idk literally everything bad that has happened is his fault and now that Mugman is gone he's gonna have to get some fucking character development soon.

I’m honestly impressed that the writers were able to make Cuphead behave noticeably more recklessly & selfishly this season without making it harder to enjoy the show. You sense that eventually this behavior is going to catch up with him in a way even he can’t brush off, and BOY does it.
And for all this nonsense he's done, he loses his brother to the devil.

Honestly, last season what made Cuphead more bearable, was the fact that he still showed sympathy and love for his brother. Sure there were some moments in which he was a jerk but at the same time he still cared. In this season he is more reckless and is more of a jerk.
But I mean it could be due to stress or something, usually people who hold stress are more reckless. The stress could be due to the Devil trying to take his soul and the jail thing ( as some other person stated before me ). But yea he was more of a jerk and had changed a little since last season.
But I really wanna see how they'll choose to develop him in the next season.
I think the big thing was going to jail, it's not great for anyone really

I genuinely felt for mugman this season. Cuphead being a bigger jerk felt as if it came from nowhere and didn't have a payoff because in most episodes he didn't learn his lesson and/or immediately went back to what he was doing.

Mugman was always there to clean up cuphead's messes, and even after going through the whole bowl boy thing, he still acted with disregard towards anyone. Mugman just cared too much to let cuphead go through anything wrong and it was clear that went unappreciated. He may give a crap, but he certainly doesnt show it. One single face at the end of a season isn't enough to convince me.

Honestly I would have had Cuphead getting dragged to hell in the season finale, with him sacrificing his own soul for Mugman.
Edit: Honestly I know they’re trying to give Cuphead a reason to change, but it would have worked better if he started changing for the better in Jail-Broken, with him realizing that his negative actions have negative consequences, not just for him, but for his brother and father figure. It would have been a better character development and then it could have culminated with the Devil yanking his pitchfork away and just straight up blasting his body, then quickly snatching his soul and escaping through the elevator with Henchman, all the while Mugman stares in shock. The End would be Mugman stuttering just a bit before saying “Cuphead…?”, then falling to his knees and starting to cry.

something i noticed throughout this season is despite the fact that he’s super reckless and seems to not care, when he IS causing chaos, he never once wants anyone to get hurt. For example when they found the devils trident. As soon as the creepy creatures started getting hostile, he got uncomfortable and left.
This is the case with multiple other scenarios in the show that i can’t really recall right now, but I just find it interesting.

I also think that's the case because of Mugman imagining himself with Cala (it would be very weird to cater for that ship if Mug was really a child) and because they grew stubble beard while in prison. But in any case, I'm with you there, I love Cuphead's chaotic energy too much to get angry at him (plus, he's probably getting development next season)

I really hate what they’ve done with Cuphead in Lost in the Woods and Say Cheese. He’s an absolute annoying jerk, but that’s totally out of his character for me. They ruined his character development, and I’m very mad about this. Yes, he’s reckless and a troublemaker, but he also have a good heart and he deeply cares for Mugman. I hope they won’t do the same mistake in the next season.
Same! Cuphead may be reckless and stupid for many reasons. But something that made his character bearable was the fact that he cared for his brother and genuinely cared for him. For example last season when they both forgave each other for eating each other's ice cream.
To make this more believable, Cuphead might be an Estp ( I'm not completely sure. )
Estp's are usually action orientated and very honest and direct. And sometimes insensitive, but they care about people close to them and love helping them and socializing with them. Which is something that makes Cuphead tolerable but in this season he seemed more...reckless than usual.
Honestly those two were his worst eps yet😭 his dad litrealy just wanted to take a nice photo with his sons and his sons just acted spolied as hell and straight out blackmailed him like bruh thats your dad

That's terrible writing though. You're not supposed to change an existing character to serve the plot. Especially if the goal is to give them "character development" that just resets them to what they used to be. You're supposed to write the plot to fit the existing characters or add a new character to serve the plot.

Plus, you do realize this show/game in general is supposed to emulate the whole slapstick humor from the old 1930's styed cartoons from the golden age of animation. So, do except to see a lack of character development for quite some time than what you're used to. Remember this show is emulating old vintage cartoons from the past so it's not going to be like a "Steven Universe" or an "Adventure Time." In fact, this show had way more development in just two seasons than "Steven Universe" did in its 5 seasons run and that show is a mess. So, just be grateful that Cuphead might get any character development at all. Because if they really wanted to go that route than they could've easily just had him be the same mischievous little tike throughout the rest of the show, with little to no development whatsoever. Because that's how it was back then. And the "Cuphead Show" technically has a valid excuse to do that if they wanted to go that route. Plus, if I'm honest here the whole idea of "character development" was something invented in the modern era anyway. For once, it's just refreshing to see a show that doesn't take itself very seriously and goes to town with its humor and plot and has fun with it for a bit. It's especially very refreshing for this modern era too. So, don't worry Cuphead will get his character development soon enough. It's only the second season after all. 💁♀

Yep, it's probably the only bad episode of the Cuphead Show as of now. While it isn't the worst episode I saw, Cuphead was as unlikable as Mort was in Gimme Gimme The Game from All Hail King Julien.
Hot take: I actually thought it was brilliant. Having Cuphead be at his worst to Mugman in the penultimate episode of the "season" meaning right before he loses Mugman makes the "Not knowing what you have until you lose it" trope hit a lot harder

That one was admittedly a lot worse because it depended on two integral characters being idiots to function, but it had the same problem of the character being a dick the entire episode and not learning anything or getting what they deserve at the end.

I kinda have a theory on why Cuphead acts like this in this season, after the first fight in Jailbreak, Cuphead had a bit of a hatred for Mugman, this hatred breifly went away after MugMan agreed to help Cuphead escape prison, but after Charmed and dangerous and High seas adventur, Cuphead felt that Mugman didn’t care for him, so he started acting more selfish thinking that Mugman didn’t care for him anymore, which also could explain why he decided to find another brother in Another brother after Mugman suggested it, wanting to find a brother like himself but also cared for him, his attitude wasn’t because he wanted to act like it, but because of what Cuphead saw as betrayal
