In this video, John will show you how to perform a spark plug test and evaluate the condition of your spark plugs on your outboard. The spark plug’s appearance can give you several clues about your engine: is it running too rich? Too lean? Bad rings? Bad fuel mix on your 2-stroke? We’ll look at how to make sure the spark is getting electricity, how to make sure it’s actually producing a spark, and how to tell if the spark you’re seeing is enough to power your outboard.

Hi John, could you answer the questions asked by viewers so we are a bit more educated on electronics?

Hello John. Really like your channel. Does Yamaha recommend using anti-seize (marine grade) on spark plug threads on my 2013 VF250LA? I use my boat primarily in saltwater. Please advise.

Thanks! When in inspected the three plugs on my 98 Mercury 40hp two stroke, the top of one of the plugs separated from the body of the plug when I pulled the wire off. Problem solved. Suspect they were factory original plugs since they had some black over spray at the base. Long over due for sure. Boat only used a few times a summer.

Hello John what type of spark plugs do you recommend for a Yamaha 200hp v6?

When you were referring to using anti-seize and Dielectric grease, did you mean there is a marine Dielectric grease? Thank you.

John, one last question. I just had to replace a perfectly good ignition coil because it got stuck to the spark plug insulator ($150 ouch!) when changing my spark plugs. Does Yamaha recommend using a bit of dielectric tune-up grease on the ignition coil boot to prevent it from sticking to the spark plug insulator? Please advise.

Hi John, i just bought a Tohatsu 50 4 stroke may 15th 2022. Its not running good. Its like its missing on a cylinder or two. The spark is very week orange colour. One spark plug had a bit of wetness on top of it. It struggles to go over 3000rpm. I have put antifreeze line bottle in it but it does not help. Can you help me please as the dealer does not want to know anymore. I would appreciate it very much.

Why would my motorcycle only crank over twice and spark towards the end? I can't get it running unless I bump start it. Shouldn't it be sparking as it is cranking over?
