It's been a long time since I've been waiting for a beautiful snowy flintlock hunting day. Well here is the story finally, with many useful information for flintlock hunters and shooters: how to reduce lock time, how to have a secure ignition, how to prepare for moist weather.

The field adventure uploads really do compliment the range session uploads. Far too many people never leave the range with their firearms and it's good to see them being used for what they were designed for.
Till 2016 we were not allowed to hunt with muzzle loaders. I had to wait 13 years to be able to walk in the woods with a front loader. Now I enjoy each and every single moment of it. And you are right: range is an artificial place. The truth comes when your are in the woods.
The last 25 seconds are the most important. The amount of respect and tradition is a huge deal and one of the main reasons I like your channel so much

Very informative video....I learned so much about flintlock rifle shooting in this video. Now my desire for a flintlock rifle is even stronger. When the video got to the hunting section...I found myself watching the video like I watch those classic Christmas movies back when I was a kid in the early 70s.....leaning forward toward the screen, eyes wide open, mouth hanging open, and forgetting to breath. Such beauty in woods during winter....the snow just makes the woods seem more magical than at any time of the year. And when you used those dried oak leaves to show respect to the Roe deer and to the viewing audience by covering the bullet hole....I actually had tears roll down my cheeks....that moment just struck me so hard. Thank you for sharing the knowledge and the beauty.

Probably one of the better and easier methods of tuning the flint I’ve seen yet. Great job with all your videos. Much appreciated. Keep them up.
Very excellent video. I just got a flintlock again, I hadn't shot one for 20 years and I forgot how much fun they can be. I found a Traditions Tennessee rifle in .50, which is more like the Jaeger rifle than anything else. It's short with the 24-inch barrel and the stock that goes to the bore. It's not in the same league as the Pedersoli but the lock time is very fast and that was with the flint that came with it and as far as I could tell, it was never fired when I got, just the flint was sparked a few times. I took it out and found that it is very accurate with 60 grains of FFFG Goex and a .490 patched roundball. I will be working up some more loads, patches, bullets to see if I can tune it even more.
When I clicked the video I wondered, why does this have 2 dislikes? Then he mentions global warming exists and I found out why LOL.

Very well done. Excellent hunt and a fine Roe deer. Your tips were spot on target. I learned the same tecniques decades ago. Started shooting, casting, hunting and doing living early American history events over 38 years ago. Shooting bkack powdet over 45vyears ago.

It is cool watching a video by a person who also likes Flintlock rifles.
One of the first rifles I owned is a replica of a Hawken flintlock.
I still use this rifle. Kicks like a mule with it's favorite
load of 90 gr black powder behind a .54 cal minie ball.
But the thing is deadly accurate with that load. What cracks me up is it
has a harder recoil then my .308 target rifle. I just love flintlock rifles.
The Hungarian woods look so peaceful and beautiful. I would love
to visit the country some day since I am of Polish and Hungarian heritage.
I have to try those Swiss powders. I have heard they are really good.
I use 4fG for the pan and 2fG for the main charge in the barrel.
Black powder substitutes do not seem to work well in a flintlock.
Much slower ignition and more misfires. I have this leather cover for the
lock assembly that works well in damp weather. But, your bees wax
solution seems more practical. I'll have to try it. Thanks for this video!

This video is quite the contrast with a video i saw last week. It were some old, fat americans equipping their pack of dogs with gps trackers, letting them loose and waited in the car for them to stop moving. That would be the sign that the dogs had trapped a cougar in a tree. Once this happened they drove to the dogs and shot the Cougar out of the tree.
The worst thing is that they called this "hunting".
There are plenty of American hunters who still hunt in a more traditional fashion.

I took no offense, I didn't really think you intended it that way. I just don't want you to think that there are those of us who don't appreciate a good day out in the woods hunting, instead of just driving around in a truck, blasting the animals. I have many a fond memory of going hunting with my dad. Much better to spend time in the woods than driving around in a truck.
@@davidlink3787 From my impression it seems that the US has a very rich history of Hunting and gathered alot of expertience and knowledge. Every community has its rotten apples.
It is VERY difficult to track and tree a cougar without dogs. They are very fast, stealthy and clever. Still, it does not appeal to me personally.
There are very many fat Americans, but very many who are not. I am 6' and weigh 170 lbs.

Some great hints on setting of the flint. I'll be able to use them with my own flintlock shooting. Still learning even four years into the sport. And while I'm not a hunter I commend you on your approach to that side of the sport that shows in this video. Also a nicely paced video with lots of great scenery.

It is refreshing to see such a respectful and calculating hunter. In America the hunting culture is often repulsive and disrespectful to the game and it’s habitat.

Love the hunting vids, you are a true professional. One firearm I have always wanted to shoot and hunt with is a cap or flintlock. Someday I hope to build one once I find a good kit. (Also curious if you recommend any kits or just buying a high quality produced one..) Also, I know it may not be directly firearm related, but Hopefully one of these days you might grace us with an Hungarian recipe or two with your wild game. 👍 btw nice shot!
How about trying to craft all the parts yourself and putting them together ? :D i've done it with junk parts and some walnut for a stock, and used a door bolt to keep in the pressure, and to shoot it i use powerful firecrackers and a very short steel wood screw with a 8mm wide head. The barrel width is 9mm so the 'rifle' is definitely not accurate long range. It's more of a close quarters weapon and has about the same power of a .22 short or a .22 long rifle. But of course since the screw head is flat, the penetration is not perfect and the 'bullet' itself usually tumbles in flight and especially inside a target.

@@mastathrash5609 yeah, i agree, my 'rifle' is for home defense (even if i would go to prison for using it here in europe, i would rather sit for a few years than be silent forever just because someone killed me), this new design with the door bolt completely plugs the barrel so i can safely shoot it without glasses. (On one of my older models, the same bolt wouldn't completely plug the barrel, and clay capping from the firecracker would come back at my face, i once got it in my eyes after a dumb mistake and had an eye infection for a week, but lady luck spared me my vision :D ) this design nearly doubled the power of my pistol which is in the exact same caliber, only the barrel is 3x longer and has a bolt. The barrels are not rifled since i don't know how to make it rifled, and the thickness of the metal sides is only about 1.25mm so i expect it to give in someday due to corrosion and crack, possibly explode. Since the barrel is so long and the caliber is fairly weak, i don't even need to wear hearing protection because it is rather quiet (just tested it today for safety reasons). But it does punch a hole into 1mm thick steel with a flat head wood screw :D Wonder what it would do with a sharp nose projectile...
Edit: on the bravery part, i just followed some basic laws of physics and tested without holding the gun but propping it up on something. Also i feel like we europeans should be allowed easy access and use for self defense with arms just like in America. But since we can't, i make my own :D

You know, those are completely different methods for sharpening a flint than what I use. Not wrong, just different. I will say that I've found that for the pistols, finer powder is a must. Swiss 4F gives much faster ignition than 3F.

Have you heard about putting a piece of hornets nest between the powder and patch to keep the patch from burning and creates a better seal for accuracy. It is a old Mountain trick that people swear by, here in North Carolina
Yes, that's something I will try in my shotgun as well.

Joe u Can go on wild bore slome vith just one flintlock ore with out of partner one up on a time i shoot a wild bore but just wounded him and he start runing ful speed ofc i can't load flintlock rifle theat rast so i start shooting with tokarev and thenks God hited twise in head but it was to close so never alone with flintlock.
I want a flintlock so bad, but left handed ones aren't easy to find and to expensive when I do

@capandball I would like to try your hunting load in my Pedersoli 54 Hawken percussion rifle -- it has the same barrel dimensions and twist as your Jaeger. However, I cannot find the LEE bullet mold you described. The only 54 caliber REAL molds they have are either the 300 grs. (MOLD D C 54CAL-300) or the 380 grs. (MOLD D C 54CAL-380). Have you got any suggestions which one I should try? Thanks!

Wonderful tutorial. Thank you. I am very, very new to flintlocks. Great lesson on managing the lock. However, I have a question about the triggers. I have three muzzleloaders, only one with set triggers. However, I must pull the set trigger before bringing the hammer to full cock. If I don't, the sear will not engage, and the hammer goes right back to half cock. I am nervous that this is unsafe, but the manufacturer tells me this is the way it is supposed to work. I would like to know what you think, maybe a tutorial on set trigger adjustment.
