  • Magnification is one of the best ways to help someone with low vision, however it is not as simple as ordering the first option you see online.
Dr. Sarah Wolff, a residency trained low vision optometrist at Amplify EyeCare of Greater Long Beach discusses the benefits of different magnifying eye glasses for people with vision loss.
    Handheld magnifier
A handheld magnifying device can be difficult to hold for elderly people for long periods of time. If that is the case, your low vision optometrist may recommend high power reading glasses.
    Magnified reading glasses
Magnified reading glasses are a handsfree alternative to handheld magnifying glasses. The difficulty with magnified reading glasses is that it requires the person to hold whatever they are reading or looking at close to their eyes, which can become very tiresome for extended periods.
    Telescope glasses
Telescopic glasses can have high magnification and don’t require you to hold the reading material close up. Telescopic reading glasses have two lenses that provide high magnification and these allow you to hold the material farther away. Despite the fact these glasses offer many benefits, it is also crucial to realize that not everyone will benefit from them as everyone has different objectives and vision. When a patient schedules a low vision evaluation at Amplify EyeCare of Greater Long Beach, our residency trained low vision optometrist, Dr. Sarah Wolff, takes time with every patient to focus on the patients goals and understand what tasks are most important to the patient. This focus goal-oriented and task-specific focus enables us to guide each patient on the tools and devices that will most improve their quality of life and independence. Call our office today at 562-925-6591 to schedule a low vision evaluation.

Of course, you can use a plus lens for the prevention of myopia, whilst you can still read the 20/50 line.
Then, very slowly, you can get your refractive state to change from -1 diopters, to +0.5 Diopters, and get back to 20/20.
    Great science is involved.

You're not getting back to 20/20 with macular degeneration unless you catch your vision deteriorating quickly and you get VERY lucky with the response of the eye injections.

I think there are some glasses called Dial Vision where you can adjust the glasses by a dial for long distance or short distance reading glasses.
Would like to know what you or anyone else thinks of those because I like the idea of being able to adjust the lenses on the spot.

I an 34 and I’ve been dealing with Macular Degeneration since I was 22, I love to read books but can’t anymore because the print is way too small, can I use the telescope glasses for reading and would they have to be prescribed to me with certain distances based on my vision?
