Congrats !! You're the first person i heard give a clear, concise & perfectly understandable explanation about what a compressor does & showing it at the same time !! If only every review was like this...
I just ordered one of these "Keeley Bassists" because this video is the best compressor video on youtube. Most simple explanation that I think anyone can understand. Thank You!!!
I just got a Keeley and I can say it’s way better than the other ones. This compressor actually improves the tone and accomplishes the needed signal compression at the same, vs the other ones that I found, would compromise tone quality for the sake of compression, which would then force me to try and fix it. This Keeley doesn’t do that at all. It’s really tone friendly and easy to use. I can see myself looking forward to plugging into it instead of dreading it.
Really great overview of this pedal. I own one and what I love about it is its ease of use. Three knobs, easy to dial in. The peak light works great. Very subtle. I use it just to tame my peaks. Only complaint is that blue light is sooooo bright.
I bought one years ago, it's one of the few 40 pedals that has never made me question its value to whatever I am trying to do. I use the exotic white mini box too on other rigs for bass (and guitar). I think this has a little more to offer than most compression pedals. They dont call it a compressor, perhaps because they have integrated something a bit beyond that one thing.
fyi....this pedal is more based off a dbx style comp and not the ross. it uses the t.h.a.t. chip for compression which was created by dbx engineers. hence the fatter sound with this comp and the guitar version called GC2. also the keeley comp pro as well, i believe...
Thanks. Easy explanation and f(x) of the controls. Nice playing too. I'm punk style. Definitely play fast and hard, so compression is the ace up the sleeve fo sho
thanks Steve, very very good things you taught me about compression. I don't have this compressor, but the two knob one. I also have a boss. I know how to use them now 😊
Actually if the threshold indicator doesn’t flash red at all, you are not compressing!!!! The more red you see the more you are compressing. This is why when he turns up the ratio we hear pretty much nothing happen. Just saying
@@deborahmcalister3936 - I would A/B this Keeley with a Boss Bass Limiter (which is also a compressor), that you can get new, for around $100. Let me know how it turns out!!!
It is a great pedal, and because of its three knob lay-out very simple to use for 'amateurs'! Only competition: Basswitch compressor pedal (!!)/ TC Elektronics (perhaps). Other pedals just suck big time and/or only work for 'knowledgeable' users (MXR/ MarkBass f.i.).In case you're lucky enough to be working with a true 'sound person (PA)': have a dialogue, because 2 X compression mostly sucks and the FOH might just use better quality 19" gear...

For the first time ever, I can actually hear what a compressor does. Thank you so much for making this clear.

Thanks for doing bass demos and rig rundowns. Makes us bassists happy!!

GREAT Work Steve Cook!, Thank you
My ebs multi comp is dying on me, im looking to replace it. would you recommend the keeley bassist compressor over the pigtronix bass philosopher?
Diuuude this is a great review thank you! I think im gonna choose this over the mxr and darkglass. 🤙🏼

What did we do before compression eh? Good stuff.
is there an amp that doesn't have a compressor built in
also preamp? or just comp
Me like! The review were really good as well!
Great overview. thanks
My tone’s secret weapon
Demo Seymour Duncan studio bass compressor? :D
Nice. But I could live without the super bright distracting LED. Many would use this pedal at home or in the studio
Just ordered one...thanks!!
If it's even half the compressor that the GC-2 is, it will be awesome.
Good Demo.
can anyone explain more in debt what the threshold do?

Thanks for the video! It is extremely useful, in that it showed that a much less expensive compressor pedal can do what this $200 Keeley can do. 😃
which brand do you suggest?

I want to see the pedal led during playing no the bassist. He looks helpless. Cause the threshold was set to high
Yes, looked like he was using the threshold knob backwards, and looked at the pedal funny when the sound didn’t respond the way he thought it should.
Explaining a compressor as something that "takes the signal and compresses it" is pretty useless.
