Here's a bit of background info:
It was past midnight on February 22, 2023 when I received a seemingly random late-night call from Jacob. He told me he had just landed in Dallas.
The "let's do something" discussion immediately followed, and before I knew it, we were planning to do a masterclass/workshop at my school, UNT!
With Jacob's incredible spontaneity, and with the logistical sorcery performed by UNT's wonderful administrative staff and faculty, we were able to host a musical workshop on February 23... on a day's notice.
After an hour of Q&A and musical discussions, Jacob closed the session with his song "The Sun is in Your Eyes" - this time, on the piano. I had the privilege to watch it unfold before my eyes.

I'm so glad this song has become a staple for Jacob playing live. He's really embraced the fact that it's the most beautiful, versatile, and accessible song he's written. I hope he never stops expanding and developing it.
amazing as always. also, loving the dark mode score, its so good
first time doing it, glad you like it!
@@JuneLee how did you do it ? which softwares ?
@@KOSTISPAL take a normal black-on-white image of the score, invert the colors, then turn any black in the image into an alpha channel
yeah It looks much better
June, you are the transcribing GOAT....the attention to detail is off the charts. We appreciate all the work you do for bringing these to us!
We live in an important time.
Built on lifetimes of effort
we have
now
risen
to this place.
It is sacred.
It is just.
It is beautiful and it is us.
Us unshackled by so much work necessary to allow us this privileged place.
Thank you June Lee for investing in this sacred plane you find yourself on,
by developing and working,
sharing and revealing,
enjoying and breathing out another level of the wonder of what it means to be human.
it's so cool that his audiences can just hit insanely lush chords on their own at this point lol
(This specific audience is all upper level music students and professional musicians)
My beloved significant other, without knowing any music theory, said to me that this reminded her of Debussy with tears in her eyes.
I think especially in his improvisational music-making, it is easy to fall into the trap of focusing on his genius vertically or his voice-leading or some other transcendentally yet casually brilliant moment. Something about this performance reminded me that he tells the most riveting and sophisticated stories through harmony, texture and color. What a gift it is to hear him.
Man how do you do that? Can you do a Live-Transcription once? I'd love to watch you by your work!
June Lee you’re the best. I thank G-d for you and Jacob.
Threw a plagal cadence in there.
dorian plagal cadence!
I love that sense of play that Jacob has.
June - thank you for your immense contribution to delivering Jacob's music to us with such care and precision. It was your now-famous interview with him that first put JC on my radar. As they say, "the rest is history." Thanks for all you do.
It is finished when I say it is finished! (gentle foot tap).
Amazing transcription, always a blast to watch
Ok it’s pretty good! I just wish we knew the harmonic composition of the cheers at the end
I was there!!! It was life-changing
My jaw dropped at 2:38, the way he uses voice leading to leave the key and come back home so smoothly... Wow.
my favorite part... you could hear gasps in the room
You’re ready for him to land on G/B but instead you get F#/B (same bass note!) and you’re instantly back home.
My kids are learning the piano just so that they may eventually be able to play JC's songs transcribed by you!
Thanks you so much to share with us such a glorious work. :)
After years, still I can't stop being amazed
I'm so mad i missed this lol I was commuting. See you around June!
God, I wish I could have been there to hear/see this in person. That short passage one bar before "H" just blew my mind! Such a tender piece, yet so sophisticated and simple at the same time. Amazing.
I was able to be there and every bit of silence was like an eternity during this song. The energy throughout the whole lecture/q&a/meet was amazing but during this you could really feel the command he had over the room and I feel it moved all of us greatly
What an absolutely transfixing, elegant performance and transcription
영상 업로드해주셔서 감사해요~
❤ amazing live transcription and Jacob's choral direction skills in live performance is out of this world.
The top of my head is visible at the end. It's a great honor to be part of a June Lee video.
June Lee--you are so brilliant !
2:38
Oof, the chords in 2:38 hit the bottom of my soul like a stone in water
freakin' beautiful
such a wild, amazing experience. so lucky to have been a part of it!!❤
_2nd bar after rehearsal mark E, treble clef:_ I'm hearing an F# on top of this. You can hear it ring out more clearly after the inner voice moves up to A#.
Loved watching this live!
Omg just makes me cry every time
loving this with all my heart!
Best of transciption ever
Beautiful work as always!
These are always so fantastic. Thank you.
breathtaking
DEFINE GENIUS.
это что-то невероятное)
Brilliant, June
Shukriya... ☀️
Ah so beautiful..........
Beautiful ❤️
Pure gold.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The score is so beautiful to watch
Una obra en si misma tu trabajo, excelente!!! Mil gracias capo!!!
Amazing work! I'm just curious how to make animated score from the beginning?
I live in Texas and I am considering to go to UNT simply because I may get the chance to see something like this in person!
I was there, stuff like this happens often. I've been able to meet Jacob twice during my 4 years here. The guests are not usually jacob collier level but they are usually legends in their own field of music. One of the best Jazz schools in the world for sure.
2:33 - 2:45. 😮
This is a generational talent, I don’t don’t what their drinking in London but let me know.
Jacob breaks the universe....
All ties between the notes look like little smiley faces. So adorable(◐‿◑)
Wow, great "musician laughs" to be had here. Anywhere us mortals could download the score to print out and attempt?
Bro the moment they pan to the audience, if you even want to call it that other than a bunch of robots only living in some imagination future filing the performance, by which is professionally and masterfully produced already.
Sounds like pop-jazz-classical music
I wonder if Don McLean has heard it or if Jacob knows “Vincent” (he probably does now !)
how do you get the audience to sing a cluster at the end? Everybody got perfect pitch?
UNT's one of the best Jazz schools in the country. Everyone there was likely a music major
yeah, almost the entire audience was music majors (and professors)
This is so impressive
그리고 유월 생일이나? 나도 미국에 영어이름이 준 이엿다. 좀 싸움 하고 고생 했다 '_';
1:14 Ravel is that you?
Ravel and Liszt in Angelus in the 3rd Années de pélerinage
I just hear ravel or Debussy with a random ENGLISHman singing behind
Pas de mesures pendant l'introduction !
Is this the music for the souless?
No, it's music for people with a brain.
Que mania chata de ficar filmando o chão, as cordas, as paredes. Filmar de baixo pra cima 🤦🤦🤦 foca nas teclas, nas teclas!!!
This is very boring.
I do like Jacob a lot, but this rendition of this song bored me greatly.
