- I thought it would be nice to bottle up my holiday stash a little nicer than normal. I will be honest I just love the look of waxed bottles. . . .
Wax: Check
Corks: Check
Homemade spirits, of course!
Oh yeah, I am FINALLY getting around to putting some labels on my bottles too!

Just in case you didn’t realize I often include affiliate links in my videos and descriptions.
This will not change the price for you at all, But the seller will buy my a cup of coffee if you purchase from one of the links. Choice eh?
I like hearing you wax poetic about the craft. 🥃🍷
Ahhhhhhhhh hahaha.
Yeap Pinned!
You should get an engraved wax seal with your logo on it to impress your logo into the wax on top of the cork. That would be fancy.
I may or may not have been googling them. Fancy is right sir!
I've found that if you put the can of wax in a pan with enough water to come halfway up the can wall, it heats the wax more evenly and doesn't overheat it. Same method for melting chocolate.
Hey there Jesse! We produce Bottle Dipping Wax here in Canada, we can make up any colour wax you're interested in if you need a custom colour. No extra cost for custom work....Great video! Kingswax
Hay thats cool man! Would be kinda fun to have all the different products colour coded@
On wine I use a second step. After waxing the bottle and cork, and twirling it for a few seconds, I dip it into a cool water bath. Sets the wax pretty quickly. Use cool, not Ice cold, water/
White wax and your choice of color crayon works well, 30% crayon and 70% wax, gives you flexibility with color, but more importantly it gives you a wax consistency that is easier to brake the seal on.
Thank you. I will try. Now I am bummed I didn’t buy those crayons discounted after Christmas. Thats how we used too make candles back when I was a hippie kid… but we also caught the house on fire
I print my lables on regular paper with an laser printer, cut them to size and if i am funky i put them for 3 minutes in an flat dish with some cold, strong coffee to give it an yellow/Bronish look. I dry the paper in the oven on the lowest setting. for glue i go the old school way too. Take some potato or corn starc, mix it with cold water till you get an tick fluid. Take the lable and give it a good dipp before you slap it on the bottle ;)Send you some Pics on twitter from my beeswax test .
You've probably fixed the issues by now, but if not, I recommend a home wax melter. They have temperature control and everything. Those beads look a lot like the same beads I used to wax my legs, (the kind you apply directly to the skin, then peel off). Also, I love the energy you bring to the video.
I love how amused your chick is… her laugh is contagious. I wish you knew the combination of waxes….
What your dollar lacks, makes up for in your incredible people, and the land for which you live. Thanks for sharing! 🍹🥃🍻
Cheers mate ! :)
Right, so I'm not a drinker at all, don't like it, can't tolerate it, don't even like the smell. (I know, I'm a disgrace of an Aussie apparently. You may laugh, my neighbour bro.) That being said, I'm building some props for a thing, and I am a little obsessive compulsive about realism, and so I wanted wax seals on some potion bottles, and also broken seals, and wasn't sure where to start. This video has set me up with a clear direction and a good idea of what I want to do, so thanks mate!! Appreciate it.
I plan on doing something similar with my wine. I intend to set the corks a little deeper into the bottle and just fill the void with wax. It should help give it a longer shelf life since the corks themselves are breathable.
True that my man. Flick some photos up once you have them done!
I use milk to attach labels to my wine and beer bottles. Just get a small plate, cover it in milk, dip the back side of the label in and shake it off before sticking. Works surprisingly well!
Yeah nice man. Im always surprised that it does not stink too. I used it a few times for beer labels.
I wax seal my wine and mead and I use a ribbon across the top of the cork and leave a bit exposed at the end of the wax to pull it off. It looks fancier and you can fasten the exposed end of the ribbon onto the bottle with more wax and stamp both wax parts for an even fancier look.
I haven’t read through all of the comments so I don’t know if somebody has already mentioned it but look for colored cheese wax; way cheaper.
How does that work?
After watching this i got all excited and ordered wax and a custom letter wax stamp so i can try put my logo on the top of every bottle 😊
Nice man!! That's awesome :) I'll need to see that when it's done haha
Getting a ribbon the color of the wax seems the most fancy way to do it.
I've got wax to do that but I've only used the heat shrink wraps. The shrink wrap has one drawback, unless you have a heat gun you have to hold it over a heat source.
If the shrink wraps are the same as what's used for wine, I do have a method that works well. Just put the caps over your bottle and submerge them in a pot of boiling water. You can hold onto the very bottom of the wrap with a finger tip, and once the bottle hits the water the wrap begins to shrink allowing you to take your finger away. Alternatively, you can hold the shrink wrap in place with a spoon as you submerge the bottle into the water. Hot water is way faster than using a heat gun. you are literally done in under 2 seconds.
I use boiling water as well. It works best for me. Every time I have tried a heat gun, I usually get wrinkles on a few bottles. No wrinkles is the water.
I like mine chilled so when when I would go to social gatherings (with a variety to share) it is in a cooler. When anyone asked what batch I brought the ink had washed off.I now place a strip of packing tape over the label. The ink fades slower than my memory as the night goes on.
like the nicely trimmed beard look!!
Great tutorial for any fancy beers I make too. Cheers!
Yeah dude for sure!
What fancy stuff do you have ready for Xmas mate?
I used brown twine with a tail large enough to tie a little tag on.
I use milk to fix my labels to my bottles. I design and print them on copy paper, brush on the milk on the back and press flat. I haven't had one peel off yet. The fats and the proteins in the milk bind with the glass as it dries and makes a great looking label.
And funnily enough they don't stink! That always amazed me haha.
@@StillIt it's just dried milk lol there isn't really enough to start fermenting before it dries. Awesome videos.
Yeah true that, I guess it's normally sealed containers that go nasty too.
Forget about a kids bottle for a week.......😫
@@StillIt I'll be having to move my mead and wine making process elsewhere soon. My wife is due in October and the dining room and guest bathroom are where i do my fermenting 😂
Ah no, I think she has you trumped on priority though 🤣😂 congrats to both of you!
Hey Mate love the Channel. I made some Baileys kinda knockoff bottles but used Bourbon instead of Irish Whiskey so i call it Barreled Cream. I Give them away for Christmas. This year I had some labels printed up at vistaprint, bought some wine bottles from amazon. Wished I saw this video sooner but I wrapped the neck with black craft paper and tape and over the top of the cork I put a thin strip of Black Masking Tape. Next year though, Here comes the wax, great episode.
I just use the wife's candles that she leaves laying around and if I want some colour I just chuck a few crayons in
Does it wax the bottle the same?
For opening I really suggest something like a YOpener. Much less of a chance of cutting yourself. And if you don’t like the dripping affect just put it in a bucket of cold water after you dump it in the wax and it’ll harden faster
Ola, you could use milk instead of glue for putting up the labels. Way more home made feeling then. Works like a ..
Good point man! I actually tried that ages ago for beer bottles, but I think I used a little flour as well. It did work great though. Surprisingly no stink!
Very cool video and I think your character is ace!
This is the first video I've watched on this channel and good got golly what a delightful man! Informative and wholesome. Looking forward to watching more content. ☺️
Good show bro!! Here in Texas about to wax me some sample bottles filled with some good ole brown water!
I like the copper wire idea.
Neat! I'm gonna use this method to seal some homemade oils (eg Chinese chili oil) and gift them to friends!
Gday mate! I know this is a really old video, but when you put them stickers on your bottles I got to thinking of a great way of sticking them.
At first when I heard about it I was quite sceptical, but it did work like a charm, the labels stick really really good, I still have an old bottle from 2014 where the label looks as good as new, and it comes off even easier with just plain old water and leaves no residues at all.
The trick is..... MILK! :D
Just brush some milk on the back of the label, smack it on the bottle, position it to your pleasing and wipe of the excess.
Keep up the good work! :)
Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for
I like the fishing line. Idea
Look into Sticker Mule for labels.
May or may as y not be reasonably available in your area.
Cheers
Just getting started but saving this idea for next Christmas! Cheers!
Cool mate. Good luck on chasing the craft!
Hello
Q1.should i wait for the wax to cool down almost to room temperature(around 41(40 d celcius) so that the whisky doesent get too warm or tainted??
Q2. Plz tell the approx ideal temperature of wax before dipping??
Q3.wont the wax smell taint the whisky at all?(m planning to do it with a very special whisky )
Q4. I have to keep the bottle for 15years .do u think it ll keep good till then?(ralfy suggested beeswax 4 the purpose but there s no video on that.hopefully the wax variety wont make a difference?)
I think wax is permeable to alcohol... will it prevent evaporation ? Or its just to give a antique look ?
I think wet cork is sufficient to give a seal for all practical purpose.
The wax would help in holding cork in position while transportation.
Sorry if I am wrong.
Another Awesome video Jesse. I don’t know how you keep coming up with ideas but keep them coming.
Every time I dont know how to make something or what to do in the distillery I make a video haha
I use Arthur Holmes as well for my bottles and they've been great. Looked at the wax as well and wasn't sure but will probably grab some now. Cheers mate
Sweet man. Tell em I sent you then. Mab then they will know I exist lol.
Awesome. Thank you
hi Jesse ...that's a nice way to wrap the bottles for Christmas ...I always learn something new on your site pal ,Thank you .. from Gerry Carty (in the hills of Scotland ) Happy Christmas pal :-)
Cheers mate 🥃 merry Xmas to you and yours!
Another nice vid my friend. But try dentil floss or the bread ties. Both have worked well in the past. Keep em coming
Ah yeah dentil floss would work nice. Cheers mate.
@@StillIt also, if you use the small wire from a loaf of bread and do a small loop on the one end it makes for an easy pull tab
Great videos mate, im also a kiwi home brewer by no means up to your standards however i enjoy brewing. Ill be using your wax top and label ideas for next xmas. Have a good one mate.
Nice! Sounds like its going to be a "merry" Xmas ;)
Nice Video Jesse, thanks for sharing
Cheers mate.
Maker's Mark: REEEEEEEEEEE..!!
Merry Christmas My Friend.
I'm not there yet.
But instead of tape what about a strip of small ribbon?
Let the two ends come out and perhaps even lap them over each over with another drop of wax.
Also on a waxing video posted on HD, to prevent "the runs", after dipping in the wax, he dipped them in a container of cool water.
The ribbon is a awesome idea, as is the water bath thanks! I actually kinda like the runs personally, but still I can see the appeal for a totally clean look.
Have an awesome Xmas !
I’ve seen leather lace used instead of fish line. Easy to pull and looks professional.
Great video! I can't wait to try this.
Thanks for another cool vid, I'm going to do this for gifts next year for my clients with my own home made stuff! Cheers!
Pleasure mate :) Sounds awesome !
Where did you buy the wax ? You did not link it
doing some catch up binge viewing, love all a ya content, will be a patreon before the month is out Im sure...
Awesome man! Exactly what I was looking for to create a special bottling for my brother’s birthday. Cheers!
Nice! Hope they appreciate it! Also dinging your channel mate. That logo is sweet :)
Your laugh makes me laugh.
When we used to do our wines with wax, we would melt equal parts crayons and hot-glue-stick. Works a treat, but is quite thick, and very sticky when melted, sets really fast, lots of colours available :). I do have a question though. Over here most commercial spirits are sold in bottles with metal lids with plastic liners. Why would a home distiller not do the same ? Love what you are doing and wish it was legal here. (Home of Jamersons)
i found vids saying to do the same thing and tried it. ends up crumbly depending on ratios and the type of crayon. more importantly it makes the air seal on porous corks and will break off relatively easily like a piece of britlte plastic
Interesting. I'm sure that would be cheaper too! It would be nice to colour code the wax, you know, blue = whisky. Red = gin. etc etc
I use 2 glue sticks to every 1 crayon - I find it makes it more flexible. I, too, use a tin on an induction stove. Crayon/glue stick mix is not as thin as your first dip @still it...
One cool idea would be to have a stamp and stamp the wax on top of the bottle.
Hey,
Are you still waxing bottles? If so the next time you do it would it be possible to get a temperature on the wax when you're happy with the way it's applying?
Thanks
I'm a wine maker but enjoy your vids as there's loads of transferable skills between the two arts.
A little tip for sticking labels on the bottles, just brush a little milk on the back it sticks great (and no it doesn't start to smell), a quick soak in water and the labels come off in one peace.
Yeah agreed! True of all the fermentation hobbies/arts.
For sure, I tried it a few times with beer bottles. Blows my mind it does not stink! I did it one time with a little flour in it too.
Great video, your glasses have been ordered
Awesome mate. cheers! The wood is split!
So I waxed a couple of bottles but the bottle was too cool and the wax pulled away from bottle after dry. Looks cool though just kinda a pain in the butt. I think I might shrink wrap the next bit.
Huh interesting. Like it shrunk too much?
Yea idk. What happen. It looks cool. And seals if you don’t wine cork. Or even if you do.
If you are in New Zealand, do you know any of the "Viva La Dirt League" folks? They do TH-cam video too.
Bravo! Enjoyed your video... on this topic :)
Can I wax seal wine bottle with screw caps too?
Have you ever canned some of your brews ?
Canned? Nope I have not! Wait . . . can you even get a canner for small scale?
@@StillIt Yes. One for $450 Australian.
The bottles look great man! Gig the new labels.
Cheers mate :)
Where do you get your bottles? I can only find the spirit bottles with screw caps.
You are awesome
Did you try fig wood yet? Truly is so nice. 😉
Not yet but its on the list for sure!
Awesome content and presentation! Subscribed:)
Hey Jesse, been having trouble with lids. It seems every material i want to cover spirits is either toxic or corrosive. I have some glasses but every cap is metal or plastic. Especially if i was to age something i would prefer something that is NOT plastic. Could you do a video on materials for lids, corks and where to find them??
Yeah sounds like a good idea to me :)
@@StillIt please also I have the same issue I have been saving glass jars but they are all metal lids with those plastic joint seal stuck on the inside, like the jam jars style. cheers
I just reuse empty spirit bottles (Jacks mainly) but yeah same thing plastic and metal lids. They dont leak but I'm not sure they seal properly either
@@richardcoates755 wow, that has been here for some time. yeah, i had beer bottles for cuts but later got some mason jars.
Yeah it has. Only realised how old the vid was after i commented
if smoke comes off, that thins your wax... quick tip!
Love the video very informative. Gave some great ideas! Cheers 👍🏼
Cheers mate :)
Hot glue sticks and crayons. Makes a perfect rubbery sort of wax, and probably the cheapest option available.
Explain this please
i missed the part where you explained wtf you wax the cork/lid. better air seal ofc but u didnt say.
That's because I am a muppet and edited it out!
For labels have you tired Milk, sticks like sh@t and washes off with no residue. Enjoy
Where did you get the bottles from?
Most of those were actually donated from a NZ winery. I got lucky there! But I get most of my ones from Arthur Holmes.
How do you think it would work with just using a normal cork?
Shouldn't be an issue, as some wine bottles use conventional corks and wax them
Hey bra! I know your dollar suck but there is a lot of good things about Kiwis 🥝! Food bra! raise in the fram! The MOOSE IS LOOSE! It’s not you do it’s the way you’re doing it! Patient and dedication always win!
2nd love it thank you for showing us
Ayyyyeeeee quick!
Heat the wax in a crockpot on high. It’s perfect.
sounds like it would work well . . . .. my wife may have words with me though lol
Does anyone know a good website for making whisky labels?
I wonder what happens if you microwave it...
Cutting tape for auto body work.
WrapCut or 3M
EH?
@@StillIt its real narrow and has a nice thin wire in it for cutting.
ahhhhhh see! Then yeah that would be a good option
That wax would have melted a lot faster if you put it in a pan filled with boiling water to about the half way point of your container
Thats what I was saying in the vid mate. I thought it would . . . . .but it didn't. 20+ min of exactly what you describe and it was only partially melted.
3min on the induction cooker with stirring and its done haha.
Still It ah my bad, I thought I deleted this comment lol. I realized you tried that a little after I posted it. It must just be a differently made wax because when ever is have to melt wax it normally goes pretty quick if it’s in a double boiler.
How many mill litters are those bottles?
The small ones are "350ml" but if I fill em a lil more its 400. The bigger ones are 500ml.
Where was the wax purchased?
www.arthurholmes.co.nz/catalogsearch/result/?q=wax
Add glue stixs
Last two minutes are the actual dipping process
Love this channel!!! 1st
Boom!
sadly Makers Mark has traidmarked
Dripping wax on a bottle dose not matter the color of the wax this is why no one else dose it in the commercial world
Yeah kinda crazy really
They release different colours too. First time I saw blue and yellow makers mark I was so confused.
Hey, you Copycat ;) good video. And next time try some cord for cooking. ;)
Dam right! hahahah
Use a ziptie
had my back waxed and now have waxaphobia
Im glad you said "back" . . . .
My bitch ass roommate keeps stealing my alchohol gonna have to do this so I can keep bottles in the freezer or replace it w rubbing alchohol
aaaaaaaargh, no beard Jesse😱
I’m thinking you just wanted to play with wax lol.
Have you seen my pleasure room? It has hot wax.
low and slow fella
Y would u need to wax
