My dog passed away about 4 years ago. This is the longest I've gone in my life without one. Watching your vids is making me think about getting one again. I'm a self employed carpenter and my last dog used to come to work with me just like Molly. Might be time for me to check the local dog pounds.
Last summer a buddy of mine called a local heating and air company because his AC quit working. They asked, over the phone, how old it was. He told them about 15-20 years old. They sent out a salesman instead of a repair guy. So he called someone I recommend and they replaced a capacitor for the condenser and got it running. My point is, Thank You for being one of the honest ones!

I used to cash in a 5 gallon bucket of brass a couple times a year, i'd get about $150.00 each time, and copper was much more per pound. Steve does too.
I think it only lit the burner and tried to start the fan motor after he jumpered out the thermostat wiring. So, the thermostat wasn't calling for heat when it should have been. The bad fan motor was a separate issue, but it would have also resulted in no heat if he hadn't fixed it.
What a dangerous install pulling air from the basement like that. Something like a heat exchanger failure or a water heater not venting properly turns that furnace into a poison pump. I hated finding stuff like this in the field nothing you can do except document it and hope nothing bad happens
Steve just curious I know you are not a fan of the high efficiency boilers, but for a conventional gas fired, forced hot water what would be your choice of manufacturer of boiler?
Thinking Steve's just letting the,"Client" know they weren't being ripped off, showing what parts were sourced for replacement, thus showing them the nature of repair.. Great Job Steve...
Steve your language has much to be desired, but you are a wonderful person and help many people. Your job is not an easy one, I know because I worked as a boiler and a/c technician for many years. I can tell you have many talents and are a skillful technician. I hope your customers appreciate you. Have a prosperous New Year.
Speaking of critters, the WORST thing I ever saw was a STINKY, SMOKING electric furnace. A raccoon had gotten into a heating duct running through a crawl space. We found the body laying on the electric elements. The customer had heard a lot screaming from her furnace vents, but didn't think to tell us, until after we found the body. The stench was unbelievable. The entire house stunk of dead raccoon. Absolutely disgusting. Because the blower motor had distributed raccoon flesh everywhere, the furnace and approx 6 feet of duct was replaced.
Guessing $775-900 bill for new blower fan, t.stat. and capacitor? Probably $3-400 in parts. Not in the business at all, but watch a lot of these videos so am obviously highly qualified to comment.😀
@@rustyshakleford5230 lol Well gonna have to probably go ductless if I have a leak in the floor. House had an addition put on in the 50s and they never added a bleeder valve...that I can find. Part of the house is baseboard so that still works so I just been hanging out in that area. Have to get someone out to take a look. Time to move to a warm climate.
Can somebody please help me I have no money to pay a professional to come out and check my furnace or fix it I have a very old Armstrong gravity-fed Furnace single burner and every time the burner goes out it blows out the pilot light can someone tell me what to do to fix it it has none of the safety features as modern furnaces have if the pilot light goes out the furnace can still kick on without lighting it is getting too cold outside and I have no way of heating my house electric heaters don't work can someone please help me
Sounds scary actually. Maybe make some calls to social service organizations in your town and ask them. They maybe able to send a professional out to look at it for you. Dealing with fire and CO2 without having the proper training and tools can be life ending. Definitely worth making a bunch of phone calls to different services. You may be surprised how much help is available to folks. Good luck on your journey...
I am from Akron Ohio there is not very many resources like that here and I already have called and checked around before it started getting cold it seems like everybody wants some money if I had the money to buy a new gas solenoid I would put it on myself it's not like I don't know how to work on this stuff I do a stop by my dad the difference between him and me is he was certified and I'm not I know not to use teflon tape on gas fittings because it causes the dummy effect are usually liquid stuff I just never worked on a furnace this old before it almost looks like a coal furnace converted to a oil burning furnace because there's an oil tank built into the wall then converted from oil to Natural Gas I just ain't got no money to pay for someone to come out and look at it or to buy a new furnace
You arent dealing with CO2. At least not much of it. CO is alot different than CO2. You also don't have a a gravity fed furnace. You probably have a gravity fed boiler. Replacing the thermocouple or hot surface igniter depending on how the boiler is set up will be a start. It could also be negative draft from some kind of blockage in the exhaust or a bad gas valve. Get yourself a multimeter that can measure millivolts and that will give you a good start. Pilots don't usually blow out in a normal system and if it can't sense a flame by design then you need a new boiler or you need to have it retrofitted before it blows your house up. Or if you are really that broke you could intentionally blow your house up with that old boiler and go buy a new house with the insurance money. You got plenty of options.
Try replacing the flame sensor or at least sanding it a bit with something abrasive. The flame sensor is a copper coloured thick bare wire that is where the flame is supposed to be. Good luck.

Another great job and great video Steve and Miss Molly. That system was a bit crusty. I enjoy all the troubleshooting steps that you do, Steve.
Is that a gasoline can on the steps a few yards from the furnace?
Bad cap always ends up leading to a callback on the motor. Sometimes I’ve found that blower motors can get a dead spot in the windings.
Can you release the footage of the fan assembly sometime.
That one is a crusty one. Is the chimney leaking water down into the induction exhaust fan, or condensation causing all that rust?

Does that squirrel cage not look like it's in backwards????
educational video steve knows what he's doing.
Why do you think the thermostat is bad. Wouldn’t the fact that the fan doesn’t run be the reason there is no heat?
I think it only lit the burner and tried to start the fan motor after he jumpered out the thermostat wiring. So, the thermostat wasn't calling for heat when it should have been. The bad fan motor was a separate issue, but it would have also resulted in no heat if he hadn't fixed it.
How come you didn't hook up G so she could use the fan to hopefully remove the dampness from the basement during the summer.
