- I've recently had many questions and comments about how to make a basic pouring medium. So I'll do a range of How To videos and this first one is about pouring medium.
Thank you for being here today. Welcome to all newbies and a big welcome back to those of you who already know me and my work. Great to have you here with me.
More about this Tutorial:
▶ Technique: How To Make Your Own Pouring Medium
▶ Pouring Medium formula: This makes a batch of 700ml of pouring medium. The ration you need is 500ml glue and 200ml water. I have a video that shows you how I mix my paints using medium here: • Fluid Acrylic Pouring ...
▶ This formula is great for straight/wandering pours, ring pours, balloon dips, open cups, dutch pours if you use PM just add a little extra water for runny consistency.

Thank you very mach for this useful video! Neithet floetrol nor owatrol is found in Bulgaria and I use PVA glue.
You’re very welcome I’m so pleased it helps 😊
I haven’t scrolled through the comments but what ratio PM to paint Mark. Sorry if this is a repeat question ❤
@@missh8008 1:3 or 1:4 (with a little water) paint:pouring medium depending on what technique you’re doing 👍🏻
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt thank you. I was mixing 2:1 water/glue then 2:1 PM/paint
I bought a 5 litre PVA in a DIY shop. works perfectly for ringpour, dirty pour etc
I can not find good instructions for medium. I found it here! Thank you Mark. I’m subscribed!
Thanks for subbing! Welcome 🤗
So simplistic compared to other TH-camrs.
Right! Exactly my thoughts ❤️💕
Agree 😊
Mark this is great. Thank U. It probably will save me A lot a MONEY since I consider myself a beginner. Thank U so MUCH. Have a GREAT DAY.😃😃
You’re so welcome. Thank you 😊
Thank you for this video Mark. As a total beginner (my first blank canvas at the ready) this video is most useful.
Glad it was helpful! 😊😊😊
Jane, how did your first few canvases turn out? I’m getting ready to do my first canvas tomorrow if time allows. Just curious. I’m in VA, USA.
Hi there. To be perfectly honest, I havent yet done any. I revamped a table that Id previously sanded and I had my garden to keep. (grow my own food) When gardening season is at an end and Im feeling bored due to not pottering outside, I will definitely be making a start and will update you with a photo. I have everything I need. How did your trial go?
@@janebarker3743 Well, it was ok. Not spectacular. I layered a few colors then tilted and spun. Made the mistake of buying small canvases. Need to get some that are at least 8 X 10 so I have some space to experiment. Want to do more of course but it’s actually an involved process thinking about a project , techniques to use, choosing colors, and mixing colors. Im retired so it’s not like I don’t have some time. But TBH, I’m always hesitant to embark on a new thing. Afraid of messing it up, etc. I’m need to get off my fanny and get busy. Cool that you grow your own vegetables. I never grew a vegetable in my life. Can barely keep a houseplant alive. Lol!
New subscriber here, because I love the simplicity of your instructions and can’t wait to binge your videos.

Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it? I've heard you shouldn't use glue as it yellows to easily. Is PVA bond resistant to yellowing? Great instructional video, thanks.
It will yellow (white paint) after a number of years re but great cheap way to apply PM
Thank you for this simple formula.
You're very welcome!☺️
First of all thank you for adding the subtitles specially for this! It's so friendly for someone like me who doesn't speak much English! Secondly, I have prepared the white glue according to your method, but I don't know how much acrylic pigment should be added. I really hope you can reply me! Thanks again for showing up!!❤❤❤

Hi Mark. Thank you for last answer about the hairdryer😊. I have another question. When you mix the color with only water (1:1) which acrylic paint (brand) do you use. Some of my colors dont mix well with water and others are thin so I end up with a very thin liquid. Thank you for all awesome videos. They really help and inspire me alot.
Thank you so much. Check out the description on each video as I list all my brands and colors that I use but generally Amsterdam, W&N, Pebeo etc
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt Thank ypu Mark.
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt Maybe I use wrong W&N? The color is not dissolve in water at all. My cheaper brands do but they not good for dutch pouring. Maybe I try Amsterdam or Pebeo😊
This is brilliant thank you. Also, some suggest adding a couple of drips of glycerin to the mixture? I definitely will make this. 😄❤️
Thank you. I’ve not heard of that but I do also sometimes add a little bit of gloss varnish to increase the shine when it dries 👍🏻
you artworks are so cool wow
Thank you so much ☺️
Thank you so much mark , this was so hepful as im going to give pouring ago 😊
Glad it was helpful! Thank you 😊
Thank you, easier than I thought :)
You're welcome!
First of all thank you so kindly for sharing and helping us to save money💝🥰🙏🏼..By any chance can you also use clear glue? What will be the ratio of color mixed with the poring liquid ?
Thank you. I haven’t used clear glue and the paint to pm ratios depend on your technique you want to do 👍🏻
Thanks for the demo, Mark. I've never made my own pouring medium (didn't know how). Could I also use Elmer's Glue? I'm not sure where to look for the PVA glue . Thanks.
Yes I think that will work too as others have said they use it 👍🏻
Just subscribed! You made this so simple!
Thanks for subbing! Welcome and I hope you enjoy what you see here on my channel 🤩
merci bonne explication
You’re very welcome ☺️
Thank you very much Sir. It was very helpful. I just wonder why some TH-cam videos, use 1 part Floetrol (which you made and call it medium) + 1/2 part paint + 1/2 part water + a little bit of Acrylic medium (very little) + one drop of silicon oil. In this case what is the Medium they use if the medium you are teaching is already the Floetrol?☺
This is a substitute for Floetrol as when practicing it can be expensive so people use a glue and water mixture as a substitute for their pouring medium
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt Yes and very kind of you to show us how it is made, but seems there is yet another liquid they add on top of floetrol also called the same medium and that they add very little. Any way thank you for your quick reply Sir. Have a great day.
Hi Mark. Thanks for a very helpful video. Just one question - do you use tap or distilled water please? Fab artworks by the way!! 😊
Hi Janine - it’s just tap water (our water is safe to drink). I think if you live in an area where the water is highly treated or chalky then go for bottled or distilled.
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt Thanks very much 😊👍
Very informative. Thank you
Very welcome 🤗
This is really helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! 🤩
Hello Mark, first I want to thank you for the useful information and I have a question please! Do I get cells when using PVA instead of floetrol?
Thank you. Yes you can 👍🏻 when you look at your mixtures to create cells it’s about the density of the paint you’re using. I’ve taken the following from “canvasincommon” which may help to explain further: Every color (pigment) of your chosen acrylic paint will have different specific gravity. The higher their specific gravity, the lower the paint will sink in the mix. Which means that when you layer your paint on the canvas the thinnest paint will rise to the surface and the densest will drop to the bottom.
This is due to the ingredients separating from each other, the different colours overlap and reveal cells.
This action causes cells to occur.
Love your work
Thank you!
Hi again, this video is very useful. For now, I bought Floetrol in Poland, but I see that there is also inexpensive pca glue. Floetrol is expensive, so I only bought 1 liter. I do not know what is the difference between these media in combination with paint.😀
Thank you. Both can be used as pouring medium 👍🏻
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt 💚💛💚💙
Great video thanks, I’m looking forward to having a go at this type of art. You mentioned at the end about varnishing your work, do you use any particular varnish please?
Thank you. Yes, I use a Winsor and Newton Gloss Spray Varnish.
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt that’s great thanks 😀
Thanks for sharing this video 🙏I have a question, can we add the Floetrol into the pouring ?
Yes you can, but this is a substitute for those that can’t get or don’t want to use Floetrol. This is a substitute pouring medium 👍🏻
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt thank you 🙏☺️
So this replaces Floetrol ? What ratio of the glue/water mix to paint if the paint is tube acrylic/poster paint? This video is very helpful for someone starting out
Thank you 🤩 depends on what technique you’re looking at- treat it as the pm so start maybe with 1:3 paint to pm
@MarkJRatcliffeArt mate i used your information and mixed some paint and had a go and im so happy at the results, thank you again for a clear and well done tutorial 👍
Thank you for they tutorial. I am a beginner (well haven't started yet, but it's somwthing I really want to try), love watching tutorials and the seeing end results of the different technics, can I please ask do you seal your painting with a varnish once they have completely dried?
Thank you Pat. Yes I seal all my paintings with a high gloss spray varnish (usually by Winsor and Newton) once they are dry.
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt Thank you replying so quickly Mark, appreciated. Sorry another question, I saw your reply to a paint ratio question, can you please clarify, 1:4 would that be 1 part paint to 4 parts paint mix? Thank you
@@patgriffiths1315 it’s 1 part paint to 4 parts pouring medium if using medium. Otherwise if it’s just paint and water I use 1:1

Hi Nora - I don’t know? I don’t use PVF so am not able to advise
This is very informative.I want to know what to use to get cells.I have silicone oil.But I don't know what ratio to use with PM and paint

Hi. Thank you for your recipe. Please can you tell me the ratio of paint to medium. I'm using Pebeo paints
It really depends on the technique you are doing, but start with 1:3 paint to PM
Hi from Belgium Mark!
I'm just exploring your channel and wow what a nice surprise!
The answer to my question may be somewhere in the comments or in another video. I'm too lazy to read it all 😁
Here you say that you use good brand paint. But what range in these brands? Standard or expert? Open or heavy body?

Love this , thanks so much. How much pouring medium do you add to your paint please? What are the reasons for adding it please. Newbie
Thank you. Depends on technique you’re trying to achieve. Either 1:3 or 1:4 😊👍🏻🙏
Amazing video and very helpful, can I please ask what ratio of this PVA with the acrylic paint you would recommend? If I was to pre make larger bottles, thank you!
Thank you. Really depends on technique you want to do. Ring pour / swipe / straight pour technique would be 1:3 paint to PM.
Thank you so much! Love watching your videos and learning 👌🏻
Hi Mark, great video. Thank you for sharing. I have just discovered marble painting on fabric. Any tips for making my own pouring medium instead of paying silly prices. I have lots of tubes of acrylic paint, could i use these in the pouring medium you have just shared. I look forward to hearing from you.
I’ve not used fabric I’m afraid - this pouring medium is for fluid art. This pouring medium can be used with any acrylic paint but how fluid you make it by adding water will depend on the brand you use. Each brand has different binders to ensure the chemical makeup maintains, and doesn’t split the paint or make it part.
Thank you for your kind words.
When you use silicone do you wash off the silicone once the painting is dry before varnishing? You must remove all oils before varnishing.
You might have holes in your paint because you e left air bubbles in the paints and as it dries the bubbles do not fully pop. To get rid of air bubbles I use a butaine torch to get rid of all air bubbles before I leave my paint to dry
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt gracias por responderme tan pronto, y por ayudarme. Espero mejorar mi trabajo

I am a beginner and I would really like to try this. I have watched a few videos to figure out the process, but I am still confused. In some of them, they mix paint, Elmer’s All Glue, and water for their pouring medium, which was similar to what you did. Is the pouring medium that you made in this video what is placed on the canvas first? Do you mix this pouring medium with the other paint colors that you will be using as well or is there a different method to make the other paints before you start pouring? How do you know how much glue and water to mix with the paints you are going to use? Any help is greatly appreciated. Your work is beautiful!
Thank you. The pouring medium is the medium or liquid you use to mix with your paints to do fluid art. The amount and how you mix your paints depends on the technique you’re trying to do. So make it thicker for things like ring pours or thinner for things like Dutch pours. Play around with the consistency (I’ve been doing this for 4 years nearly and still she. To tweak depending on method and technique) but most of all have fun experimenting and exploring the world of fluid art. Thanks for your kind comment and support.x
Thank you Mark
