We had to separate our bison herd!

  • Having a sick member of the herd is not fun at all. Having any sort of sick or unhealthy livestock is very unfortunate...however, we have to do the best we can to help that animal get better. After a couple of conversations with the vet, we decided to try putting some recommended antibiotic in one of our momma cow's feed. It's a challenge to manage one single bison in the herd, but we gotta do the best we can when dealing with these animals.

I hope you read these comments: With dogs you can check the gums to see if they are showing signs of sickness. Their gums goes from pink to white. Yoiu don't want white gums ever!! I use Homozon which is a powder that has concentrated oxygen bonded to magnesium. It's the oxygen that counts - get the Homozon with water into the Bison via the mouth. With dogs I use a baby bottle, a bison you can get a calf baby bottle (much bigger). Jam the bottle into their mouth and squeeze in the contents. Use: a human takes two teaspoons full for a 200lb person, so figure it out. You can't over do it, but don't go nuts the Homozon isn't cheap. Wait an hour and check on your bison. Bring treats with you - hunger is a good sign. My dogs show results in 30 minutes - gums bright pink and they show more energy. Just a thought as antibiotics use isn't good. It is the oxygen that skills the virus and the magnesium gets pissed out if not needed.

bison cows wean calves on their own the problem seems to me that keeping bison or any other wild species on small acreage,it is a huge problem for free roaming animals when it comes to parasites , diseases and behavioral problems therefore you will be battling issues like these forever . i have seen an old cow at an auction tear up several alley gates and i am pretty sure she probably ended up in a freezer but the thing of is she most likely would have been suited to survive and thrive in a wild state but didn't have the temperment that suited a breeder and by the way IAM NOT IN anyway an animal rights activist and have kept domestic livestock and very few wild speciesfor nearly 40 years so good luck raising ,handling and staying safe

How much hay is wasted with Them tearing it up. I know with my horses they would bury there heads into it and Pull it apart. Next thing you saw there was lots of loose hay around the roll. They would stamp that into the snow and do their business on it. ( trying to be polite ). So there was a lot of waste.

Bison feet and legs are amazing to me. They can walk or they can hop on all four legs at once. How can Bison legs work in such different ways? Bison can run like a locomotive at just 6 months old! How can their thin legs and small feet carry all that big body? 1,000 - 2,000 pounds...Some animals walk and some hop but not usually both! Amazing animals for sure!

One small disagreement with your remark that getting a little bit of the antibiotics won't harm the rest of the herd: that's exactly how diseases get the chance to build resistance to drugs.
You're correct in that it is highly unlikely to harm the particular animal that gets a bit by accident but it's a bad practice to allow because of the long term loss of effectiveness when you need the same drug later on.
Just a thought. Best wishes and Merry Christmas to you.

One day when he returned from being gone, he found that while he was gone, the bison bull had crashed thru a wooden fence and two barbed wire fences to get to the shed where the camel was being kept. The camel was dead! The bison had disemboweled it. He was not sure why.
