The US military has mascots as well. For the US Navy it is a goat, the Army a mule, the Air Force a falcon, the Marines an English bulldog, the Coast Guard a black bear although I don't think the Coast Guard has had a living mascot since the 1980s.

Fun fact for the Americans, the royal welsh regiment started using a goat as a mascot after the battle of bunker hill, when a goat from a farmers field wandered into the battle and marched with the welsh regiments colours, after which it got adopted and a tradition was born.

The tail of the Irish wolfhound is lethal. Not only can it clear a coffee table with one sweep, but it can take out a pair of toddlers in as many seconds if it is happy. On the flip side, if it wags it hard against the wall then the end of the tail can split and your wolfie will then decorate your home like a murder scene.

Many years ago The Parachute Regiment Pony SgT Major was David Soames, the ponies loved him and followed him everywhere and he could call them and follow his instructions. When he retired they gave the new pony major hell, escaping etc. You'd look out from the RHQ to see half a dozen paras trying to chase down the ponies. The dog is the mascot of the Irish Guards and is a Irish Wolf Hound. Mascot within the forces especially the army are a long held tradition and the mascots them selves are actually inducted into the army and normally have a Rank and certification to prove it. There is a famous story about the Parachute Regiment that is recorded in the Book and film “A Bridge Too Far” which apparently was a chicken which the troops took to the Arnhem Bridge attack over the Rhine, everything went wrong on that attack and of the 10,000 troops that went into battle only 3,000 came out after 5-6 days. That film is really worth watching.

Writer and poet Robert Graves served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers during the first world war. The soldier responsible for the regimental goat was called the Goat Major, although he was always of a lower rank. Graves sat on the court martial of the Goat Major charged with "prostitution of the royal goat" as he was renting out the services of the goat to local farmers.

Emrys Forlan Jones); Parachute Regiment = Shetland Ponies (Pegasus IV, and Falkland I - absent); Royal Regiment of Scotland = Shetland Ponies (Cruachan IV, and Islay - absent); The Royal Welsh = Kashmir Goat (Shenkin III, Taffy V - absent and Gwyllim XII - absent); Mercian Regiment = Swaledale Ram (Pte. Derby XXIX)....
Also absent are two Drum Horses (minimum 18H - Talavera and Alamain); an Indian Black Buck Antelope (Bobby XI); A Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Watchman V); and two ferrets (Imphal IV and Quebec V)...

The thing on the pony's tail is a padded wrap, they have something similar around their legs too. It's protection. If a horse stumbles or staggers in a trailer because of rough roads or something like that, they can hurt themselves, so we put those wraps on them to try and prevent injuries from kicking the trailer walls or partitions or bumping their butt against the ramp (they have bones amongst all that tail hair). Also yes, the tail wrap also protects the hair of the tail and stops it getting damaged and dirty during travel.
The stuff they were putting on the ram's horns is a conditioning oil. It prevents the horns from becoming dry and cracked and makes the colours seem brighter and richer, we use it on horses' hooves too. It's like hair conditioner or moisturiser for us.

Several Canadian regiments also have animal mascots. The most famous being the bear that inspired “ Winnie the Pooh “. In WWI a member of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade adopted a small female black bear in his home town of Winnipeg, Manitoba, she became mascot and they called her “ Winnie “. When the Brigade was sent overseas. They put her in the London Zoo for safekeeping. A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin were frequent visitors. Little Christopher was so taken with the little bear, he called her “ Winnie the Pooh “ and asked his dad to write him a story about Winnie. A.A. Milnes children’s books were world famous. Disney took note and the rest is history. In my city ( Winnipeg ). Assiniboine Park has a statue of Lt. Harry Colebourn playing with his black bear “ Winnie “

The navy used to have mascots on many ships up until I think some time in the 70's. Cats were popular (they helped control rats). Irish regiments tend to have Irish Wolf Hounds as their mascots.
As a by the by, T (Shah Shujah's Troop) Battery, Royal Artillery had an Afghan Hound as their mascot in the late 60s/early 70's. She was called Sasha and she made the dizzy heights of Lance Bombardier, before she disgraced herself by relieving herself in the Battery Commander's Office.
The Battery Commander was her owner.
Being an Afghan Hound was quite apposite, as the battery's honour title is a reference to one of the Afghan wars.

Just Nuisance wasn't a Mascot, he was actually an enlisted rating with the rank of Able Seaman and was given the duty of being in charge of dog watches. He was given special permission not to has to wear his cap whilst on duty except for parades and special occasions by the Admiralty in London in writing, I'm not joking, you can't make this stuff up. He saved the life of a seriously ill rating, a documented fact. He was smuggled aboard a Fairey Albacore a single-engine biplane torpedo bomber on antisubmarine patrols on a number of occasions, an activity he enjoyed immensely. When he died, he was accorded a funeral with full military honours, where hardened serving World War Two veterans openly wept. His grave in still tended with its head stone and a statue of him erected near the naval base in Simonstown, Cape Province, South Africa in a position overlooking the harbour. th-cam.com/video/6TCK1Rrkbww/w-d-xo.html

Animals that were adopted as military mascots were typically brought over by soldiers who went overseas, or were stray animals that were adopted by the unit along the way. However, some mascots were specifically gifted to a unit.

The British Army does a whole lot of weird things and a lot of it is down to tradition which they don't like to let go of. Scottish regiments have pipe bands and the band leaders' rank is Pipe Major. Many English regiments also have army musicians and I used to work with an ex-serviceman who played the cornet.
I am fairly certain that this does not go on any more but some officers used to have a boy soldier. My grandfather, who was in the British Army during the First World War, was one such. I think they were generally chosen from recruits to the ranks who seemed to be suspiciously young but were clearly seen to have military potential and it was useful to have them learn how the officers did their job. My grandfather never had the chance to progress as he spent most of the war as a prisoner of war and devoted his energies instead to escaping. He managed to escape three times and almost managed a home run via Switzerland, but ended the war in a high security civilian prison as the German authorities clearly decided that there was no POW camp secure enough to keep him behind the barbed wire.

A bit of gratuitous trivia, did you know that the official march of the USMC is "Waltzing Matilda", it's in honour of the bravery of Australian troops who fought alongside them in Korea.

I was never in the army, but I'm given to understand that soldiers, particularly infantry, get quite soppy and sentimental over stray cats and dogs they come across, in the midst of battle. I dare say the Roman legions did it. Mascots are just an extension of that.

Sarah, Welsh regiments have traditionally had goats as mascots.
I believe the Royal Welsh Fusiliers claimed to have adopted a goat in 1775, around the time of the battle of bunker hill, during your countries war of independence.
I believe the Welch Regiment claimed to have adopted a goat as a mascot in the Crimean War.
Both of the these regiments no longer exist independently, but now form the Royal Welsh through amalgamation.
Since the mascots hold rank, they also receive pay or an allowance.
In the city of Cardiff, there was a pub called the Goat Major opposite Cardiff Castle.

2:00 so, the thing on the pony's tail, I can't remember what its called but its to prevent them from rubbing the fleshy part of the tail against the door of the trailer when they are being transported. Their tails can get itchy and they can absolutely rub them raw trying to get that itch, which can be really painful and get badly infected by just rubbing all the skin off. I saw it happen to my sister's horse when I was younger

As I'm sure that you are aware, in the UK we love animals of all types, in the UK there are a few official bodies who deal with different things such as RSPCA
    PDSA
    NSPCC
Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
    Peoples Despensory for Sick Animals
National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children
The last on was not entirely jokingly mentioned many years ago because animals had a Royal society where as Children only have a National society, it is swings & rounderbouts really as both are properly funded, it's just that having royal in the name seems to give more emphasis, I suppose it depends how you personally consider the Royal family, but yes they can and do have influence.
    Loved the video though 😊
