Great on dobro & banjo, one of best in comedy, harmony & solo singer, truly multi talented man. Should, like many others, be in Country Music Hall of Fame.
The chain was attached to a large pocket watch. When Os was at the house pickin, the watch was the thing that pushed me close enough for a picture with he and my sister....I must have been 3 years old....The memory still is as pure today....Thanks Os for so much music, for your kind funny soul....I will never forget you.
3:26...In the early 70s my dad was teaching himself to play the Dobro, spending many nights wearing the needle through Oswald's records as he tried to learn all his songs. This lick stumped him though and he just couldn't figure out how to play it. Well, soon he found out that Oz and his partner Charlie Collins were playing daily shows at Opryland, and it took him about a minute to decide he would go directly to the source and plead with the man to teach that lick to him. To this day dad calls that his $700 lick, because that's how much the trip from Chicago cost him.
Great story... but if his dream players where like me or my other Folkie/Blues group members, they should have lovingly showed him what to do for free!!! xox We believe in "Passing On Knowledge". No sheep stations at stake! Here's a little parable I live by, for you.... "May those who soar in the sky, Walk, back down the mountain, And teach those with leaden-ed feet, To Fly !! " xoxoxoxo
@@glennsprigg2378 Yeah, I think you missed the part where I said that's how much the trip from Chicago (to Nashville) cost. Gas, food, lodging, and everything else you pay for during a week's vacation. I don't know how you got the impression that Brother Oswald actually CHARGED my dad for the lessons. In fact, dad got to be great friends with Oz and Charlie, as many, many aspiring, or casual pickers did down through the years. They were exceedingly approachable, gracious, and humble gentlemen, and incredibly talented entertainers. During that first visit, Brother Oswald invited my parents to join him back stage at the Grand Ole Opry where they were guests of Roy Acuff in his dressing room. Within that first year Oz and Charlie were guests in our home as dad kicked off a decade's worth of performances he promoted with the two Smokey Mountain Boys as headliners. I feel honored and blessed to have met those two gentlemen and experienced their charm, wit and masterful performances, even if I was just a kid and more or less a fly on the wall. I'm sure your folkie/blues group is just as incredible, though. And thanks for the nugget of wisdom. I can feel it changing my life already. 🤣
@@chuckyufarley2999 So sorry my friend!!, I misinterpreted you post, & thought they 'charged' him!!! Oops... I still really believe in general what I wrote before, about passing on knowledge. We here have always tried to help the 'Young-uns' & others, as they are the ones to take over from us oldies.... Love from Australia!! xox
We all don't get Nashville money. Some do it, because it's their heart. And that , my friend where's it at. God Bless America, and Keep Country In Country.
the video is a little blurry but that sure looks like earl scruggs on the banjo. always loved to hear the bashful brother play. been listening to him since the late 40's. so many great ones no longer with us but nothing stops the old march of time. soooo say or do something nice for someone today and tomorrow and ......and you know. thanks for the post.
This is one of the Opry's best performances ever. The way you played that break really put the icing on the cake. Nothing like listening to and learning from the Pros. I am from a family of musicians, 6 of us to be exact. I have been backstage at the Opry many times, watching and listening. My oldest brother played steel with Marty Robbins in the early days of their career. I worked in gospel music as a kid, had some great times picking with some awesome musicians. Thanks for being there, teaming up with Oswald for this great performance! You have surely played with some greats, and Oswald is no exception.
Too bad the Hawaiian-style of playing the dobro (National) doesn't get more recognition. Lots of and lots of Bluegrass dobro licks are from the Hawaiian masters, yet everyone thinks the Bluegrass guys came up with them. If you know anything about classic Hawaiian slide you hear it in Oswalds playing.
I’m trippin and is it just me or is the tracking off or something cause damn. But I digress. Hell the only reason I came here is cause I know good music. I try to play it but I surely recognize it when I see it on you tube
There is newcomer Melanie Brandenberger. She does a really swell job on dobro. Brandenbers need help please. Bethany needs real help as does Angela with their instruments. They play not for profit, please help any way u can.

With all due respect to Josh Graves,Shot Jackson Roy Clark etc. Oswald was the greatest dobro player ever. Jerry Douglas is good but not great he clutters everything up to bad.

There are many dobro players but only one Oswald, bless his heart forever.
Beautiful song and well played wonder what name is.
@@harryjackson4759 The end of the world
I sure did love this man..
Brother Oswald is the greatest! And “End of the World” is the best dobro instrumental!

That’s lovely. Os was very obliging.

Just awesome music will never be the same 🤧🙏
I quite agree with wireless 1964, this music is so appreciated back here in ENGLAND
Awesome 👌 thanks👌
I can remember my papa laughing like Oswald he was a big fan lol .and I am to
It does not get any better than that .
thank you for sharing so I could listen 💙
Just beautiful ..... this would have made the great Roy Acuff smile !!!
Now that's great picking
Oswald still had that sweet Hawaiian tone in him, most of that's been lost in modern 'country' Dobro playing.
do you mean when it goes down to up and up down and up
The sound of the waves
ohhh .. i sea, alright then, u can count on mrme to bring it back and keep it alive.
A lot of dobro playing today doesn't even sound like music to me, just collections of licks.
Rob Ickes ruined it
Great Dobro picking!
This is perfection.
Best dobro music ever
Aright get her done awesome 👌 👏!

He's sure is great!

It's Earl
The best there ever was and ever will be. Next in line was Josh Graves.
Yes he was the best that step on stage to play the dobro .
