Its just preference. The shape of the barrel affects the sound, and how it feels for the player. In Goines' case he has a narrow barrel, which cause more focused air and a more focused sound.
This was so nice. I have heard the advice before to play scales and long notes to improve, but I like how he explains it and demonstrates it. I would love to have this guy be a teacher for me.
That is a b flat clarinet (the basic one) and they can be pretty expensive.... if your looking to try it I would recommend buying a used on (I got my used one for about $400-$600)

The the bore of the barrel is not that different than other barrels, but the lack of material makes it lighter and more responsive.
