Hahahah. I love the way his tone of voice changes when he is about to talk about the price. It's like he has to tell a 5 year old that his mother just died.
I've ridden every electric motorcycle that's been offered in the US. they are no doubt about it a Hoot to ride, I would have bought a Lightening 218 if it had ever been actually, you know, for sale. I haven't seen an Energica in the flesh yet but it strikes me as a fully realized "real" motorcycle, maybe the first. Full credit to Zero for building an exciting ride but you can easily see it wasn't designed by people raised in the motorcycle world. I'm working up the nerve to set up a test ride down in Austin. "Working up nerve" because I'm pretty confident it will follow me home. And that means I'll have to retire a bike or two to make room.
Thanks for talking about the "Range" .Unless there is huge battery improvement, range is an issue. The only way electric cars and motorcycles will have no range issues, is to standardize battery's where you pull in to a "Service Station" [?] and swap batteries, or go for a no longer than 10 min full charge at the "RE-Charge station".
0-100% in 10 Minutes at a decent range of 350 km (~220 miles) at a power consumption of around 12 kWh/100km means a necessary (and constant) charging power of around 250 kW (without losses). Those chargers are rare. :D
You said you 'rode it hard' down to the bottom of the mountain. If you had instead put the regenerative breaking up to full and let gravity help charge your battery would that have helped your problem?
For a days riding on the twisties you really need at least 250 mile range to be comfortable. Either that or a lot more charging points in areas where people want to ride and not just big cities.
Agreed, but if your favourite lunch stop has a charger nearby then you only need 125 miles range. Electric is about thinking a little differently but not always compromising. And for most days it would be wonderful to not bother with petrol stations but charge it for a couple of dollars while you're asleep. And the savings on petrol and servicing is an enormous grin factor. I haven't done the maths on bikes but buying an almost new BMW electric car with a loan would see the loan paid off within five years on petrol and servicing savings. That's pretty special. Again, it's a new way of thinking; shifting the finances up front to benefit in the long term.
If I were to buy an electric bike, I would choose a Zero model, and check out the HD Livewire to see which one is better Later people and have a good one
Is this thing extremely top heavy? It seemed every shot of it coming into or out of corners, the bike kind of flopped over like the rider wasn't ready for the weight as it leaned. They need two major things: more range and a huge drop in price.
With exactly this Eva I drove 8000 kilometers towards Nordkapp in 2023 and around Iceland in 2024. My baby has never let me down.💪 More impressions on my channel
Evans, do you have a level 2 charger at your house for the occasional electric bike review, or do you have an electric car? I would like to have seen what the 120v charger looks like that you carried with you. Overall excellent review!
We have this bike in the family. What you don’t see: the acceleration is insane. No gear shift; throttle can be used to ‚break‘, the flow in the ride is like nothing I have experienced on a motor bike. We own several motor bikes, a Harley, a Guzzi. I don’t want to miss those. But this eBike is like nothing else.
bl8danjil how much does bike maintenance cost on a regular bike? There is always trade offs. The valve adjustment, spark plugs, cluch disks, battery, stator, starter, oil changes all add up.
Death Wish83 you don't change a starter and clutch disk every 3 to 4 years though, unless you're abusing them. Electric bikes still require oil to lubricate anything that creates friction along with greasing those bearings. Batteries require it to be changed out about every 4 years, 5 if you've been keeping it fully charged with a battery tender, shorter if you've been letting you're battery drain. A regular bike or car battery costs under 80 bucks, 125 if you got something like a Dodge Charger. If I remember correctly a Toyota Prius battery costs a couple grand for a new one. I'm pointing it out because most people think the battery is going to last for the length of time they have the car.
bl8danjil depending on the bike and the abuse and overall use, you can change your clutch even every couple of years. I ride over 30k miles a year. Things go out the more moving parts you have. In the end an electric motor is simple and easy compared to a combustion engine.
Death Wish83 no it isn't. It is just as complicated, it just doesn't function like a combustion engine. Were you listening to anything I said about the cost of the battery?
All of the arguments for and against are valid. Price too high, charging stations outside of big cities? Few and far between. I am surprised Tesla hasn't brought out an E-bike.
In a car you can have a battery as big as you want. The entire floor of a Tesla is a giant battery. In a bike the battery needs to be tiny, yet accomplish a whole lot. Engineers at Tesla have a much easier problem to solve than engineers at Zero. That's probably why.
Good review. This is another bike I'll file away into the "neat but I wouldn't buy it" category. Also not holding out any hope for the "in a couple more years, we'll have super batteries!" argument you see from time to time. I have to imagine only really young people can believe that at this point, they've been saying it for at least as long as I've been alive, "magical batteries right around the corner!"... Thank you for the review.
There do exist a few battery-technologies that are more durable or lighter or even charge faster BUT they all come with a huge trade-off, like cost, rare metals (not suitable for mass producation), necessary high operating temperature, aso. And the thing everyone forgets is that the faster you charge these Li-Ion Batteries the more their life-span decreases. :D
Batteries today ARE super batteries compared to 20 years ago. Same bike would have had a 30 mile range. If, in another 20 years, they are 3x more energy dense again, we could have this 90 mile range with 1/3rd the weight (in batteries). So yeah, battery tech moves slower than we would all like, but it does make meaningful progress.
Checking in, the latest major platform revision from energica has been announced. They quote 130 miles highway or 261 in the city, 0%-80% in 40 minutes. Not exactly a super battery, but still plenty enough for 95% of use cases.
My thing would be battery longevity im already hearing that the Live Wires battery is going to need to be replaced every 5 years at $6000 a piece. And if fast charged too many times in a row, it'll void the warranty ..... these electric bikes are cool , but i dont see them being cost effective at all.
we sp jeed an electric bike shootout with ALL the options on the market n se the best bits of each n what works well . wich electric is the best today power range charge time performance ect ect . please guys
I enjoy Troy's reviews in general. However, in this case he clearly was not into the review when Evan was talking. It made the whole segment uncomfortable. As for the motorcyle, an urban environment would be much more suitable. At 621 lbs. who are we keeding canyon carving.
BrokenFiddles It was about 105 degrees when we recorded the stand up portion. We’re actually standing under a white tent to have some shade. So, cut Troy some slack. :-)
I have owned an electric car and believe me range anxiety sucks. Went back to a gasoline car and have a new appreciation for gas powered vehicles. Fuck electric, my gasoline bikes will be staying with me for good.
If you're an early adopter you buy it in spite of the downsides like range because you want early access. If you're not able to handle the downsides, wait it out. Blaming all EVs because you bought a low range one and expected to fit 100% of your use cases is dangerous.
I'm with you there; the Zeros have everything going for them except their looks. The SS looks sexy and solid whereas the Zero looks cheap, crude and unfinished in comparison; park them both next to a premium fossil bike and only the Zero looks like it was designed by a scientist, not a motorbike designer. I really hope Zero, and all electric bikes, do well though as the planet needs them and they're amazing fun.
A 2KW inverter and roll-up solar panel should be sold with bikes like this. Would make charging less of a hassle. Why doesn't Energica do what Zero is doing and give you the choice between station charging and more range? Electric motors are only truly viable in dual-sport/supermoto bikes from what I'm seeing. Sitting on the backs of motorhomes...
Honestly the SR is close enough to not spend the extra money, the Italian does look better though, and level 2 charging is built in. It's extra on the Zero.
I'll take the SR. Also, it's made in America. Hopefully I can afford a Tesla soon too; also made in America. I'm proud of our ingenuity. Plus, I've ridden the SR and it's price point is far more reasonable.
I like it... But at least where I live ev bikes don't get the same kind of subsidy that cars do... If they did this price might be easier to swallow but I could never justify this full price. Love the DC fast charger tho!
I don't know how to explain it but when you're riding the bike the weight disappears. It's one of the most planted and sweet handling bikes I've ridden. I'm talking about the Eva but I'm sure the ss9 isn't too far off.
Great review of an awesome bike. I want one. I've ridden the Zero bikes and they too are great. My next bike, (and all future bikes in general), will be electric. Once you ride one, there is just no going back to an ICE.
My next bike will be a Zero. Test rode one a few years ago and I can't forget it. I have a 2015 FZ-09, and while I love my bike; it's just not the same. Plus, I want to do something good for the planet. Electric is the future and it rides good.
Better compared to what? It seems to take more work to lean mine over than on my heavier and wider tire'd Honda VFR. It does seem to have more stability once leaned over and it seems to be completely impervious to wind. I'm sure those characteristics come from the low slung battery.
I can't imagine driving home from work knowing I needed to get gas on the way, and finding that every gas station on the way home was out of gas, feeling even more worried with every station I passed knowing I'd be short. Until I can reliably charge any electric vehicle as easily and quickly as fueling a bike or car, I'm sticking with gas, no thanks.
TwinSpinner i can survive 10 minutes max, and that should be 80% charge. hopefully in 2020+ when we get the newer 350kw CCS charging stations it will be possible 👍🏻.
You wouldn't be in that situation, as you would usually always leave from either work or home with a full battery. If this is not possible, then stay with gas, for now.
electric bikes are the future...i would not even look at one until they can make it run all day on a single charge...and that price will kill the market for electric bikes...great review guys enjoyed it......
A bike like this negates the practicality of electric. To me the perfect electric bike should be 5-6 $K, it should go 120 miles or more and the battery should be detachable, so you could take it with you and charge it while you're at work, as well as at home if you live in an apartment. Also if you matched your battery electronically to your bike so only yours would work, it would double as an anti-theft device. Make the bike light and nimble, and it could be a perfect bike for daily commuting.
Great review guys. VERY detailed especially for such a new, NEW type of bike. I love the looks. I love the performance. But yes I also agree the weight is a lot and the ability to fast charge via better infrastructure is MUST for this bike to succeed in the mainstream market. However, I'm confident that will come. Energica should be hard at work fixing that handling quirk of wanting to stand up under braking or resistant to turn when the weight shifts forward.
Glad to see an Italian company making electric bikes, they definitely benefit from some of that design & flair. Still too pricey for the average Joe, but getting better. Wish you would have mentioned the top speed. Would love to own an 2nd R1 style electric sport bike, electric makes a lot of sense for an occasional weekend toy. This is due mainly to the lack of maintenance, but the top speed just isn't there yet for most all electric vehicles.
Really enjoyed that review gents, Iove riding electric bikes (I've only ridden the Zero DSR and BMW's electric Scooter) but I think this one is by far the best looking out there. Does it have traction control do you know??
They do make a + model with a lot more range. On board level 3 is fantastic, but level 2 is limited to about 3kwh as opposed to the usual 7. That's a little tough, but ....
Folks, this is an italian bike! It is not an "Ener chica"! Made me cringe every time I heared it. Please, in the name of the Lord, the accent is on the second syllable. Savor the words: enErgica! Eva! Esse! Esse! Nove! (not SS9!) Ah! There couldn't be a better name for an Italian e bike.
Awsome progression in electric bikes. I know that's the future of motorcycles but at this point IMO, they have to do more to keep the weight and cost down.
Are you kidding me! An 87 mile range on a high dollar bike. This is a bike for the 1% folks not us real folks. How about testing some electric bikes for the real world.
u guys have to opt for the motor trend format (withought charging) basically talk about the vehicle the track it at the same track every time and poat thr numbers with the same driver, also poat 1/4 times hell maybe even breaking then some subjective opinions. this just.talki g about the bike make for a no e objective and boring video.. my .2 cents
Ok, so lets see if big corps would of gone with Tesla instead of Edison who knows these would be the more advanced machine. We might of had hover roads copat wit these and other vehicles LMAO.
I would like to ‘get on board’ with electric motorcycles, however, there is still little incentive to do so. They may be fine for an urban resident who lives in LA, and can plug in while at work, and only has a 20mi commute everyday. But for those of us who live in the burbs, too risky, too expensive, not practical. Maybe someday.....
"You're getting a lot of nice machined parts. You can see the machining on it." -> If you can see the machining on your parts, they are not nice. They are Chinese pot metal left over from crudge, shitty machining. Just FYI>
Electric motorcycles are a great idea for pavement racing and dirt track. Stop showing as though anyone in their right mind would by it for anything else. No one wants range on their mind on the whole ride. Gas and Go.
Stop talking like you speak for everyone. Ive demoed the zero bikes and they are awesome. When the battery life extends, the range extends, and there are more charge stations in my area, im definitely going to pick one up. Its a twist on the same kinda fun, pun intended.
Enjoy your charging stations, I would rather be riding. So, go buy one and lets us know how the coffee at the charging station was. Also like I said, anyone in their "right mind".
I own a Zero and I love it. I ride it every single day with only a few exceptions. Sometimes I take out the VFR usually so the gas in it doesn't go bad.
The Energica bikes have Level 3 charge capabilities, you can get a charge up to 80% in about 30 minutes from nearly empty. Energica has proven you can do street touring on these bikes.
HadesOmega Moto 30 minutes... 😂 mate, thats not acceptable! if i were to ride with friends and they fill up in like 3 minutes, i need to stand there with an umbilical for another 25-27 minutes all by myself 😂.
Italian bikes are expensive, electric motorcycles are expensive. Put the 2 together and you have a $25k bike that can't even go 100 miles without spending several hours to charge...
When you do your math, add the difference cost between gas and electricity for the same distance travelled, and the cost of ownership which includes regular maintenance, typical parts replacement, and repairs over the expected life of the vehicle. When you get done your argument about high cost loses credibility. The entrance to the electric club is high, but the long-term payoff leave gas vehicles in the dust. Chained Lightning beats Angry Bees in the numbers game. If you emotionally don't like the feel, say so but dial down the rhetoric unless you have evidentiary-science that directly contradicts what every engineer and Economist has been saying about this for years. Full disclosure, I'm 61 and have been riding sportbikes since the age of 14. KZ750s mostly until 2013 when I realized maybe I should relax and bought a 600cc commuter, the Yamaha FZ6R. Since I live in NorCal I thought to buy local and get a Zero SR but after getting taste of the Zero Corporation near comically out of touch attitude towards women who ride, I chose to get an 2017 low milage Energica Eva instead. Besides an Energica can fully charge in over two dozen local charging stations in the time it takes to grab a coffee.
I like them. hopefully battery tech advances a bit faster so you can get a bit more range AND lighter weight; of course price has to come down also. I have been watching electric motorcycle reviews for a while and I still have not seen ONE person pull a whoolie! With all this instant torque and power I would have thought it would have been easier to modulate and get that front wheel up. I wonder if these battery bikes are liquid cooled or not. You have to factor in battery degradation. GOD FORBID this thing is the equivalent nissan leaf of the bike world! If the battery degrades too fast your gonna be left with an expensive brick.
Hahahah. I love the way his tone of voice changes when he is about to talk about the price. It's like he has to tell a 5 year old that his mother just died.
If I'm not mistaking this is the bike the TMZ reporter was using in Jordan Peele's 2022 Nope movie

I've ridden every electric motorcycle that's been offered in the US. they are no doubt about it a Hoot to ride, I would have bought a Lightening 218 if it had ever been actually, you know, for sale. AF1 Racing in Austin has Energica demos, come ride one
From his riding position it should be called the "Elbow".
Kenneth Ord Yah, what was with that, looks like an amateur riding. Looked like trying to make some kind of statement, not sure what

Nice one. No smelly petrol gloves no smell from exhaust, pure clean so no garage need. Just park in living room.
Why does Troy have cacti under his arms?
Hi. How much does it consume electric power on wall socket?
I don't know how to explain it but when you're riding the bike the weight disappears. It's one of the most planted and sweet handling bikes I've ridden. I'm talking about the Eva but I'm sure the ss9 isn't too far off.
Italian bikes are good apart from the electricals, hmm, this should be the way to go then?
I'd go for the Zero SR/F
My ears are bleeding from the banshee-like whine of the bike.

Good job on the audio quality! Much more professional.
I still can’t believe the makers haven’t incorporated solar into these?
Trust me on this. The weight is wherever the batteries are.
Yeah so is that why the Zeros seem to handle better; the batteries sit a bit lower, right?

That will require battery density improvements. Need several years.
It doesn't feel as heavy as the numbers suggest. I was amazed when I rode one.
Well it's the future that's for sure, think Nico Rosberg has 1👍
cerberusk9uk it won't have much of a future with that price
Fritz Krieger I was thinking more of electric vehicles 😂
That's exactly the problem even if it has good potential we aren't rich racing pilots with so much money to spend on something this
A bike like this negates the practicality of electric.
See at $5-7k that's worth a look.
so that's how a terzo milano is gonna sound like
Making a long range electric bike is much harder than making a long range electric car
If you want to compete and win go electric. If you want to ride then it is still the petrol for me
Glad to see an Italian company making electric bikes, they definitely benefit from some of that design & flair.
Traction control will be available from 2019 onwards, just as cruise control and heated grips
They do make a + model with a lot more range. On board level 3 is fantastic, but level 2 is limited to about 3kwh as opposed to the usual 7. That's a little tough, but ....
Still less expensive than the Livewire....
Too heavy, too expensive, nice try.
621-pound curb weight wth ...
wholly crap thats heavy..
Folks, this is an italian bike!
It is not an "Ener chica"!
Made me cringe every time I heared it.
Please, in the name of the Lord, the accent is on the second syllable.
Savor the words:
enErgica!
Eva!
Esse!
Esse!
Nove!
(not SS9!)
Ah!
There couldn't be a better name for an Italian e bike.
Awsome progression in electric bikes. I know that's the future of motorcycles but at this point IMO, they have to do more to keep the weight and cost down.
I prefer bikes that are 250-300lb lighter
Way over priced and way to heavy..If I lived in San Francisco a electric bike would be a cool option for sure...
Are you kidding me! An 87 mile range on a high dollar bike. This is a bike for the 1% folks not us real folks. How about testing some electric bikes for the real world.
$25K...... lmao.
TJ Buy this or buy a superduke 1290 and still have several thousands left over for mods 🤔
Actually cheaper than I thought but erm yea Id rather get.. literally everything else.
Ride it guys.
That sound it makes is really unpleasant
Horas bang troy
Good, comprehensive review. As always, thanks for sharing.
Steve
u guys have to opt for the motor trend format (withought charging) basically talk about the vehicle the track it at the same track every time and poat thr numbers with the same driver, also poat 1/4 times hell maybe even breaking then some subjective opinions. this just.talki g about the bike make for a no e objective and boring video.. my .2 cents
Aprilia screen
Ok, so lets see if big corps would of gone with Tesla instead of Edison who knows these would be the more advanced machine. We might of had hover roads copat wit these and other vehicles LMAO.
You lost me at 621 pounds
I would like to ‘get on board’ with electric motorcycles, however, there is still little incentive to do so. They may be fine for an urban resident who lives in LA, and can plug in while at work, and only has a 20mi commute everyday. But for those of us who live in the burbs, too risky, too expensive, not practical. Maybe someday.....
"Energeeka"
"You're getting a lot of nice machined parts. You can see the machining on it." -> If you can see the machining on your parts, they are not nice. They are Chinese pot metal left over from crudge, shitty machining. Just FYI>
with that price i'll just buy a Zero
Yep, I bought an SR/F which is way better looking too
e-ner-geee-KA
They stole the dash from my Tuono , Help :D
Thought the same ... but not the rumble of V4.
haha, actually the other way around Energica has had that dash unit on their bikes since 2015.
Their trying so hard to give it a good review. Its heavy, freakin expensive and has shitty range.
could have called it fat bob
Love the spirit of this but I don't think I'd ever want this bike unless its 1/3 of the price. Even then, I'd probably go with Alta
Gimme it!
electric motorcycle is too quite, wouldn't recommend to ride in traffic
Italian bikes are expensive, electric motorcycles are expensive. Put the 2 together and you have a $25k bike that can't even go 100 miles without spending several hours to charge...
joetca The on board level 3 DC fast charging would charge it in 30min.
No chance at this price
V4😈
season worried gently delivery steady national gather relationship distinction.
Too expensive 😏
I think I want an EV bike. Not this though, the EGO. I loved that bike in Ride 2 and would love to ride one.
Great review! This technology will need to evolve before electric motorcycles (and cars) become mainstream.
Learn to pronounce Energica, mate...
