The reason why few people know about Frieren is because most of the credit has been taken by Himmel, being the hero. A similar situation can be observed today, for example, by asking people who were part of the crew of the moon landing. Most only know Neil Armstrong and don't remember the names of the others, and this happened 55 years ago. Imagine if it had happened more than 80 years ago, as in the case of the party that defeated the Demon King in Frieren. So, I don't find it absurd that few people, even among the wizards, know about Frieren.
This is funny as you continue on in the series they actually touch upon how the heroes are perceived the farther north the party goes. Some of the characters completely change like Himmel looks more stereotypical masculine and buff, Frieren as a sexy well endowed elf mage, Heiter is a nun, and Eisen is the same.
Ehre isn't the girl Wirbel liked, the age difference doesn't add up. She was a little child when he saved her village, she's maximum 19 right now while Wirbel is about 33-34.
Always confused when people assume that lol. They showed her already being a kid when Wirbel saved her village so how would she be the same age when he was a kid too? lol.
He _does_ claim that he doesn’t remember her name or face anymore, so that clip of their parting is _about_ as reliable as Voll’s silhouette memory of his wife. If he’s BS’ing about not remembering her name or face, and he totally does, sure it’s evidence they aren’t the same person, but if he’s being legit, the image he remembers is effectively a blank canvas in the shape of a girl. Apparent age is less of a factor at that point.
An important thing to note about and one of my favorite things about this series is the level of strength between mages isn’t so cut and dry. Frieren mentioned herself that she has lost eleven times previously to people with less mana than her. This episode really showcases why. Wirbel’s spell allows him to bind the movement and mana of anyone as long as he can see their whole body. If he caught Frieren with that she is done, doesn’t matter how old she is or how much mana she has. Same with Land, if he uses that clone effectively he can easily one shot far more powerful mages than himself. Or with Laufen, she took that stille right out of Frieren’s hand before Frieren even noticed. Now imagine if Laufen had been going for the kill. Show is over right there. Even back with Aura Frieren won that fight not because of her strength or skill as a mage. Aura had a spell that could literally subjugate anyone as long as they have less mana than her, and Frieren used that against her by simply tricking her into misreading how much mana she had. No drawn out fight, no clash of skill, just conned her for the easy win. Things like mana levels and skill level only mean so much. The mage who wins is the one who best uses their abilities. Really the one exception would potentially be Serie since she has so much knowledge on top of her age as an elf to have built up her mana and technique she has a million different ways to outwit or counter people. But even then ahe could potentially get caught if Wirbel caught her off guard.
you said it so well! this is why i think it's futile too to powerscale this anime, but at the same time what plays more is the wit and experience of a mage
I feel like because there's ways to outmaneuver someone with high mana or insane skills, this anime's fights almost seem "fairer" compared to something like JJK's Gojo or Sukuna where there's no way to outsmart them because nothing could even touch/hurt them

Here they are humans in an exam, so of course her guard is down, though I don't think it's down that much that she would get killed. We know she said she lost 11 times before, but we don't know if that meant life-threatening losses. With Qual she had the hero party members to seal him, yes. However, those other losses could simply have been that she can't beat them like some one with such high defense and mana pool that she can't get through and give up fighting or someone who js really fast like Fern that she had to keep defending and can't attack back.

And I think Freiren mentioned that she's lost in the past to highlight to Fern that despite their power levels, either one of them can still be beaten in the right circumstances. It's also a good narrative moment to put tension back into the story after showing how strong the lead(s) are.

I don't believe the people if this world have access to universal education either. That, coupled with a lack of technology and fast systems for communication between population centers makes for an inevitable loss or drift of information in varying degrees.
I mean, those First Class mages in the dude's story apparently asked Serie for some fucked up spells to make themselves inhumanly powerful but what Frieren considers legendary-level spells are stuff that do your dishes and laundry for you and stuff like that. She'd probably ask this all powerful elf lady for a spell that sweeps and mops your floors. Not gonna lie, ever since watching this show I can't help but think things like "Yeah, flying and shooting gigantic magic lasers is cool and all, but having spells that wash my clothes and make tea and clean my house would be god-tier."
It’s not that Denken’s group couldn’t catch one, it was just more efficient to go after Frieren’s group since they were messing with all the water spots. Plus don’t forget there are other npc character groups, so while Denken is the only group that means anything that doesn’t have a bird, they definitely aren’t the only ones without. Plus Denken gotta be pretty strong if he knows who frieren is, and is STILL confident he can beat her
Also, as Genau said, this test also includes a lot of luck. Some groups will have significantly tougher luck and just fail to find any Stille. The only equalizing factor is that you can fight the other mages to take their Stille, which means that strong groups can win even if they were unlucky, and weak groups will get killed off.
Those birds are so sensitive to mana that even the smallest drop will send them flying off at the speed of sound. Awfully interesting that those first class mages could have a conversation and move about while having the birds on/next to them 🤔 You know they’re built different.

There were multiple other teams that they show didn't focus on, remember last episode one team got eaten by those bird monsters and another team wasted their time trying to melt the lake in the middle. So more than one team didn't get a stille.
Ehre and fern's fight shows the difference in their efficiency. Fern is standing on the ground conserving mana and striking with ordinary offensive magic with acute precision, previously she was defending with singular blocks of defensive magic as well. Ehre on the other hand, is flying and attacking with a powerful earth element magic both of which requires a lot of mana. On top of that, she tried to block fern's attacks with multiple blocks of defensive nagic, expending even more mana. Fern has already admitted that ehre has more raw power than both their teammates. But fern won because of battle experience and more efficient fighting style.
Everyone who speculates about what kind of spell Frieren would ask about. They keep thinking something big and grand. This is Frieren! *_She's gonna ask for a spell to clean mud off her boots!_*
Wirbels spell is not the binding spell Frieren used. Her spell only works on birds, has a range of 50 centimeters and she doesnt need to see the whole object (At least its not stated). Wirbels spell works on everything, we dont know its range and he needs to see the entire body. It also negates mana usage, idk if the bird spell does that.
denken's team weren't the only ones who didn't catch one, there were other groups that just got no screentime, and it was part of their strategy to just steal someone else's, not that they couldn't

We see a grown up Wirbel save a child Ehre in her flashback, which means she's a lot younger than him, probably early 20s. Hell, she might even might even be about Fern's age, 17-ish

Also, as Genau said, this test also includes a lot of luck. Some groups will have significantly tougher luck and just fail to find any Stille. The only equalizing factor is that you can fight the other mages to take their Stille, which means that strong groups can win even if they were unlucky, and weak groups will get killed off.
I don't think he's trying to beat Frieren. He's trying to stall her. He knows that he'll probably lose in a drawn-out battle.

Ehre and fern's fight shows the difference in their efficiency. Fern is standing on the ground conserving mana and striking with ordinary offensive magic with acute precision, previously she was defending with singular blocks of defensive magic as well.
Ehre on the other hand, is flying and attacking with a powerful earth element magic both of which requires a lot of mana. On top of that, she tried to block fern's attacks with multiple blocks of defensive nagic, expending even more mana. Fern has already admitted that ehre has more raw power than both their teammates. But fern won because of battle experience and more efficient fighting style.

Her spell only works on birds, has a range of 50 centimeters and she doesnt need to see the whole object (At least its not stated).
Wirbels spell works on everything, we dont know its range and he needs to see the entire body. It also negates mana usage, idk if the bird spell does that.

I've seen a lot of people think the girl from Wirbel's past is Ehre but that doesn't line up. Wirbel is in his early 30s (promisse made 29 years ago, he looked about 6yo). We see a grown up Wirbel save a child Ehre in her flashback, which means she's a lot younger than him, probably early 20s. Hell, she might even might even be about Fern's age, 17-ish
