Hi Jay can you help me. I am new to the Hi Fi Separate world. I'm saving up for my first proper system. I subscribed to you, also Darko, A British Audiophile, Andrew Robinson. I'm looking for a great first amp that can power Monitor Audio Silver to Gold range speakers. Power rating 80 + 200W. When the Speaker brand lists their speakers as 80 - 200W, does this mean per channel or across both channels example each speaker need 100W or each speaker need 200W ? This is confusing to me. I understand the Monitor Audio speaker go down to 5 Ohm 165Hz. I've been looking at amps plus streamer from Cambridge audio, like the CXA61 / AXR100 + CXN V2 streamer, or all in one like Roksan Attessa streaming integrated, Roksan Black, Hegel H190, Musical Fidelity M5si, NAD C399. Is there even a Marantz amp that might be ideal. Which of these amps are more likely to drive and pair well with these speakers, can you help me to choose the right one. My bedroom is a 15 X 14 room. Thanks.
Greatly appreciated the in depth review and comparison with the 590. I'm fortunate to own the 590 and, combined with my streamer(Innuos Zenith) and external DAC (Aqua LaScala) through the XLR, I am a very happy camper indeed. Unlikely that I will upgrade to the H600 but your review makes it easier for me to explain the potential of the new flagship integrated Hegel Amp to friends and interested parties.
Really happy to see you get some advertisers Jay! I’ve been here since you started your channel, and you’ve worked hard to make your channel a success. You definitely deserve that extra income 🤝
I upgraded from Hegel H90 til H160 and was happy. Then a norwegian who had a room at a HighFi show told me: - HEGEL and NAD plays more correct but PrimaLuna is much more musical and engaging. So I bought the first edition of the EVO 400 the PrimaLuna DiaLogue Premium HP - Now I can finally say I have a real HighEnd sound. It has a Big sound stage with silky smooth sound with much more air and details. Combined with my GoldenEar Triton Reference it is a combination made in heaven used also by Sandy Gross. Feed by a DAC from: Audio Alchemy DDP 1 and PS 5 Power Supply + Audio Alchemy DMP-1 Streamer (Roon Ready & DSD Streamer)
I have the opposite experience. Went from PL to H390 and never looked back. Very system dependent. Your experience can be different from everyone else’s.
Thanks Jay, great review. I'd love to own this, not least because every amp I've owned so far starts to harden slightly when I crank it up, something this beast undoubtedly wouldn't do. Keep up the good work!
Good and clear review. I think Hegel is too quick to renew their models. Also a pity that you cannot choose whether you can purchase the amplifier with or without a streamer unit. Well to end with a positive mention is that the Hegel are very good amplifiers.
Good review Jay! I've been a Hegel fan since 2018. Started with an H190 and now an H590. Last year I heard the H30A+P30A and it sounded great. If this is in the H600 then I am quickly sold. A better DAC will only make my Roon core/streamer from Silent Angel (Rhein Z1 V2) sound better. Love the better connections at the back (currently using optical for TV and XLR with the Mohican cd-player). Maybe not a big step up from the H590 but looking forward to it. Only the remote control (no fading characters and less heavy) could be bit better.
I previously owned a Hegel h160 paired with a Holo spring KTE Dac and it was a lovely combo with the OG Maggie LRS. I ended up selling the LRS and Hegel to buy a 1.7i and paired with Anthem STR integrated. Hegel was a great option and have a fantastic amp stage but didn’t love their onboard Dac so bypassed that.
I would be interested in a comparison with the Michi X5 due to the similarities in design philosophy. I do love the Michi sound, but Hegel is an interesting alternative. And thanks for a good review! :)
Bruh.. with my H390 now i am seriously considering to the H600 😅 i need to listen to it in person before i can decide though! Love my H390 with my Q Acoustics Concept 500 speakers ❤
Went from H390 to H30a/P30a, big difference. How does H600 compare? (Source, Auralic) One problem with H390 was QAQC issues, where after 9 months of use, the LAN stopped working and theres no other way for it to connect as it is LAN only.
Can you please help me? I had the privilege of hearing h590. It was love at first sounds. However the retail price is salty to me. How does h400 compare to the h590? Or h600 or earlier models h390, h360 or h300? Has the sound improved or stayed the same with this new h400? Is h400 sound quality at the level of h590? Yours, maybe one day Hegel owner.
Jay, you seem to like a lot of tube gear, so if you had to choose between the H600 and the McIntosh MA12000 (tube preamp and solid state power amp) which would it be if you had to live with only one of those two for the rest of your life?
Probably will depend on the speakers. If its something like the sonus faber electa amator iii, magnepan and/or Kef, I’d probably go with Hegel H600 but if it’s something like wilson audio, focal, magico, b&w then I’d choose mcintosh ma12000
@@Jayiyagi Did you see Adrian's review of the H600 recently on his AE channel? Why does Adrian hate Hegel so much (aside from Hegel not showing the model number on the front).
Hegel needs to introduce upgraded streaming boards to its H190 and H390 models to allow for Chromecast and Tidal Connect. AirPlay2 caps out at CD quality not HiRes. Fine if they leave Bluetooth and Wifi out as it impacts SQ (unless they can properly shield it.). The integrated amp market is moving too quickly now and they are falling behind in the lower price ranges.
Thanks for the review! Lots of new info there for me. I own a H590 and have been a happy music listener with it. A while ago I ran the latest firmware updates and it said something like Updating DSP. What is that about? Is it updating the streamer or the DAC? Just curious to know. And I find it important that Hegel keeps these updates coming. It would be a shame if the firmware updates would stop and I were ”forced” to upgade. I much rather upgrade voluntarily and as a happy user. Other than that, glad to hear the guys in Oslo are nailing it and making new gear with significant improvments to the previous generation!
Like you I’m an H390 fan, I own one couldn’t be happier. What I would like to see Hagel do is make the things like the phonos stage and the DAC and streamer optional . If you have your own, which at this price point, who doesn’t, you shouldn’t have to pay for something you’re not gonna use.
Have you auditioned the new Michi X5 Series 2 integrated, which also includes a good MM & MC phono stage; retail is 8K; (soundstage said it could easily have a 15k price tag)? Or the Michi S5 Series 2 amplifier and Michi P5 Series 2 preamplifier for a total of 12K? This combo is competitive with H600 with a great deal more power; same for the integrated which is $4,500 less!
i purchased a H600 and besides disliking the cheap knobs (in comparison to H390 ones which were great) it made weird static noises in left channel. Had to return it. Customer support wasnt great either.
Hi Jay, thaks foe the revoew. I currently own the H390, been thinking to upgrade the dac to something like the Holo audio spring 3 and get an external streamer like lumin u2. But i can instead get the h600, which route will make sense for a better sound. I am running it to power my Dynaudio contour 20is. Thanks again.
Haven't heard the H600 of course, but I know the H390, as well as Holo Spring 3 and Lumin streamers. For my money, I'd keep the the H390 and add Lumin streamer and Holo Audio DAC without a second thought : you'll save money, have more streaming options and a better DAC as well.
Jay, thanks for the review! You mentioned that this amp can be updated, so my question is does Hegel have available updates on the H590 to make it sound better? I have a H590 and it sounds good, but a new DAC would definitely make it better. Thanks
Well, I am not in the market for a H600, but I am thinking about buying a "better" amp for my R3 KEF. The 3 candidates which are in my price range are the H190 for a "rational and cheep" solution , the H390 for "future proof" in term of power ( I want to replace the R3´s maybe next year with some R11 or R7 meta ) and last but not least the H590 which is now massive reduced in price all over the place ( near the H390 region ) ... Is there any advice out there, please give me some input, thanks!
Great video. But you talk the same way as you do for McIntosh line. So, I’m a bit undecided between a Hegel and McIntosh. I have a pair of Sonus faber olympica nova ll, which you reviewed. My budget for an amp is £10000. Please advise. Thank you.
Very interested in your comparisons. I can’t find anywhere in the net a comparison between Hegel and Pass Labs intgrated amps though. Would you care of doing one?
Hey Jay, another great review! I’ve been following you since the beginning, and really enjoy your channel. My signal path right now is Roon server to LUMIN T2 streamer to Holo May DAC KTE to Hegel H590 through Wilson Audio Sabrina X speakers. I’m thinking about selling the H590, streamer, and DAC and trading up to the Hegel H600. Would you recommend? Thanks!
Thanks Jay ' Never tried hegal but between you and Sean F (ZF) I get a good feeling of sound character ' ohh ZF hasn't dropped video yet but me a Patreon ' 😮 but hegal kills me with those internal cables ! Why can't they put on bottom up ehaaa ! But hey love to take for test drive never the less I miss you cousin !! Dam it !
I've got a Hegel H390 and I've got a problem with running my Hegel, Tidal connect from my new Samsung s23 ultra as my controller. But no problem from an iPhone. Any suggestions what I'm doing wrong? I need the Samsung as the controller. I've not got a technical brain so struggling.
I think that what you are experiencing from the iPhone is that you use Airplay. The H390 actually does not support Tidal Connect. But with iPhones it works over AirPlay2
As a man who, like all men, from approx 30 years old +'or'- a couple, had first started loosing his hearing only from the very highest frequencies & progessively lower frequencies as the years passed, (woman get 2'ish more decades b4 their hearing starts to do the same) Not that you notice this very slow natural hearing effect until it goes below 12'ish Khz & lower at older age, but that loss is very well scientifically documented & that makes me think the headphones shown before the Hegal review should be very, very well worth trying due to their personalises ear's audio analysis & compensated output. Why hasnt anyone done this before, it's a no-brainer & will suit all ages inc' pensioners &/or all (non age related) frequency dependent hearing response losses
I wish you compared it more to higher end equipment like the P30A and H30A and real integrated stuff like a Gyphon diablo 300 and possibly the dagastino integrated amps.
Awesome dude where's he going to get that from? Wish all you want but think how he'd actually accomplish that. A lot of these boutique brands are snobs and don't let mere mortals touch or review their equipment.
To be fair I’m sure doesn’t have $30k laying around to purchase that combo and he was fortunate his former employer allowed him to compare the 590. He did the best he could with what equipment he had access to.
@@aceofspades6667 you see a lot of entitlement these days in audiences of you tubers. They get dehumanised and are seen as vessels to satiate niche needs and compulsions or a subset of self-centred individuals. Don't judge the man in the arena, with sweat on his brow.
@@peterwood2633 I’ve been guilty before it’s because you just get caught up in your own head and lack perspective of the reality of the content creator. I will do it sometimes with YT car reviewers as there is car wow where Mat has access to literally every car of earth to race. Where as 99% of other reviewers are beholden to the press fleet of the manufacturers.
So basically adding a eversolo DMP-A8 to a H590, makes it much better, cause the DAC and pre amplifier are the main differences between the H590 and the H600?
Pre amplifier is not really a good comparison, I own the a8, but the pre amp is in my opinion just a nice gimmick. As a transport the a8 is amazing into my tt2+mscaler
Car manufacturers should get into hifi. They are wasting all their energies to produce ultra complex vehicles that cost so much money to produce. They even throw in a stereo for free…With a fraction of their efforts they could instead sell expensive hifi.
ye well, it isn't some amazing bass but you get quantity and "surprisingly better bass" than you might think from a $100 headphone. Good for music or movies on the go, on the train, plane, gym etc. Used it recently on my business trip and loved it
For $12,500 I would expect better interior layout and build quality. Accuphase, Luxman, and even Yamaha, look to be much better built and laid out. WTF!!
Was going to buy one until I found out that they are made in China. No thanks. Hegel is very deceiving. They claim to be a Norwegian company but their products are made in China. Not listed anywhere. How do they get away with this??
Hegel SQ must be superbly stupendous because the look of it is straight up dumb. I have to give the Hegel visuals a major zonk. The look of Hegel is insulting to HiFi both the past and present! This is my honest feedback and personal opinion that matters to nobody.
An over damped, global feedback reliant design, from a measurement only company, that prides itself on not tuning their designs by ear, no thank you.. Of course some people like pineapple on pizza and that’s ok too 😅 But for the newbie, please hear alternatives also, before locking into buying Hegel. Also please never barking dogs again on an audiophile channel again (the reasons we put on headphone and tune into this and not mr. beast) 😮
Hegel is not voiced by ear, is a statement you can find Hegel making in multiple places (manuals, QA’s in reviews, I think it might even have been in the box of the H90). Anders from Hegel also mentioned in either a TH-cam review or a podcast, that he was trying to push the idea to the engineers, that parts with the same spec might sound different. I don’t know where you get your info, but think there is plenty of evidence to support that they are a declared measurement only company. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with that, but I personally find amps sound very very different, so that’s just a major red flag for me. While I have not heard the H390, H590, H600, what I did own/home audition (P20, H90, H190) didn’t do much for me (with the H90 standing out rather poor for the money). I figure out I prefer amps with a much lower damping factor 😊 I compared the H90 to the Exposure 2510, similar price and wattage but with a damping factor of around only 50) on a pair of Triangle Trio (quite easy load) and B&W Nautilus 805 (makes many amps sweat) and interestingly the Exposure sounded like the much more powerful amp.
Fair enough. Maybe then they should clean up their messaging then. Like tell the story about how they changed from what they used to be/promote themselves as. To me the proof is in the listening and that has matched well with a company that do not use their ears. But just one man’s opinion 😊

For my money, I'd keep the the H390 and add Lumin streamer and Holo Audio DAC without a second thought : you'll save money, have more streaming options and a better DAC as well.
I prefer my Denafrips ares ii dac over the built in H390 dac. More natural mids with the Ares ii. Although I find the H390 dac very good still.
Jay, thanks for the review! You mentioned that this amp can be updated, so my question is does Hegel have available updates on the H590 to make it sound better? I have a H590 and it sounds good, but a new DAC would definitely make it better. Thanks
how did you compare them since only h600 has Tidal connect?
What brand of capacitors were used in H600?
AGD comparison?
Thank you.
its similar in a way. Mcintosh (depending on the model) is usually more warmer/richer.
@@Jayiyagi Thanks for your promptness: much appreciated.
Is that a Volumio streamer I see behind you? Super interested in that. Review incoming? Great work as always.
That Hegel forward feed patent is really paying out 🤑
Very interested in your comparisons. I can’t find anywhere in the net a comparison between Hegel and Pass Labs intgrated amps though. Would you care of doing one?
I think Hegel will come out with an H400 to replace the H390 at some point
Have h390 since almost a year a fantastic piece with my b&w 702 s2 they have never sounded as good, h590 and h600 is way out of my price league
Thanks!
I hear their phono amp is good. Real good
Amazing that anyone would spend that much
It’s only paper you only live once my brother or sister whatever floats your boat
❤
4:28 Why did you blur that chip?
There has been a mistake during the editing of this video. It does not use a burr brown dac chip shown in the video but a Sabre DAC chip.
@@Jayiyagi A pity as I almost always prefer AKM to ESS and other manufacturers like Gustard are switching back from ESS to AKM.
I like what you said with regards the H390. But I’m biased. Do you think a 390 successor will follow suit and when do you think?
No word on future models as far as I know
H390 was shown year after H590. Maybe Hegel follows same path as before. At least I'm looking forward to that too (maybe I'll downgrade from my H590).
Dam it !
have you ever heard about odyssey stratos power amps they are also srable down to 2 homs
Is the hegel 600 as good as dcs bartok sound?
Isn’t the bartok a high end dac? The H600 is an integrated amp…
@@Jayiyagi Is the Hegel DAC good as DCS DAC? DCS can be used as pre-amp, Would dcs bartok into hegel 390 sound superior to H600 straight to speakers?
thank you forthe review.. though at 3:55
... what a hot mess.
I seem to remember the 590 getting less praise than the 390. Maybe this will resolve the criticisms. Im sure the price will be hefty.
When can we expect the AGD monoblocks review?
soon!
I've got a Hegel H390 and I've got a problem with running my Hegel, Tidal connect from my new Samsung s23 ultra as my controller. But no problem from an iPhone. Any suggestions what I'm doing wrong? I need the Samsung as the controller. I've not got a technical brain so struggling.
reach out to hegel. I'm an iphone user so no clue
I think that what you are experiencing from the iPhone is that you use Airplay. The H390 actually does not support Tidal Connect. But with iPhones it works over AirPlay2
But he can use upnp right?
@Jayiyagi just to let you know that I installed a upnp app on my samsung and it's not giving directions in connecting from app to phone to Hegel.
@HegelMusicSystem exactly. Not even with a upnp app added to my samsung.
People have doen this before I have Beyerdynamic Lagoons that do this.
How much canadian?
please inquire with your local dealer. Pricing in different countries will vary depending on many factors
$14995 CAD. I'm an authorized Canadian dealer (Everest Audio).
$12k is not chump change
Especially when you can buy much better sounding amp for not much more money
@@akosinskiy Such as...?
They do heave cheaper products…
@@connorduke4619 for example such as any Eon Arts amp starting from Squark
It's a lot of money, but you get a double mono integrated amplifier plus DAC and Streamer for the price.
NOS burr brown?
unfortunately I was wrong on that, it uses a Sabre Dac chip and not Burr Brown.
@@Jayiyagi I was going to say, BB have old style chip package
Hegel is asking $12K for this integrated amplifier that is made in China. Crazy margins for both Hegel and Distributors/Dealers. 11:17 🤡
Stickers cover up the Made in China text.
That's a lot of money.
Jay, are you cutting down on the number of video reviews you make. I never heard how much money for these.
How did you come to a conclusion that the other amp had no good preamplifier??
Do you have bionic ears???
I simply used the pre-out to test the pre-amplifier
😂🤣😂🤣😂
It has probably a lot of definition, but what I lack in Hegel is the musicality and timing. It does not make me swing.
Why do you keep saying “imagery”. What is that? Imaging?
yes imagery meaning imaging
The cost of a nice japanese motorcycle. 🤔
Its visual presentation still leaves much room for improvement 😅
Try the Michi X3 it’s much better
I'm friends with the Chinese guy that owns the company that produces these. Nice man.
Krikey! No model number on front yet again, and the letters should all be engraved.
No Numbers. That’s all part of Scandinavian minimalistic and timeless design…. I love it!
And it should have the new front panel design...
Only audio dealers care about that. How many Hegel amps would a normal person have in their listening room?
Lego!
If you want pitch black just buy a purifi based amp.
Car manufacturers should get into hifi. They are wasting all their energies to produce ultra complex vehicles that cost so much money to produce. They even throw in a stereo for free…With a fraction of their efforts they could instead sell expensive hifi.
"Massive Bass"
LOL
All from an under hundred dollar Bluetooth headphone.
ye well, it isn't some amazing bass but you get quantity and "surprisingly better bass" than you might think from a $100 headphone. Good for music or movies on the go, on the train, plane, gym etc. Used it recently on my business trip and loved it
Nilai from Hypex is better for a fraction of the cost.
For $12,500 I would expect better interior layout and build quality. Accuphase, Luxman, and even Yamaha, look to be much better built and laid out. WTF!!
Na...a40 from soundcore is better n mobility excellent..hmm..Hagel..na lots of others Better..peace!
The knobs are the only difference? Niiiiiiiiice ...not.
Raiti’s rides?
An over damped, global feedback reliant design, from a measurement only company, that prides itself on not tuning their designs by ear, no thank you.. Of course some people like pineapple on pizza and that’s ok too 😅 But for the newbie, please hear alternatives also, before locking into buying Hegel.
Also please never barking dogs again on an audiophile channel again (the reasons we put on headphone and tune into this and not mr. beast) 😮
Hegel isn't using any global feedback at all and puts their emphasis on extensive listening tests during development, so you got your info wrong.
I figure out I prefer amps with a much lower damping factor 😊
I compared the H90 to the Exposure 2510, similar price and wattage but with a damping factor of around only 50) on a pair of Triangle Trio (quite easy load) and B&W Nautilus 805 (makes many amps sweat) and interestingly the Exposure sounded like the much more powerful amp.
@@RigVader Hegel staff confirms that listening is a crucial part of product development, so you have got that wrong.
Fair enough. Maybe then they should clean up their messaging then. Like tell the story about how they changed from what they used to be/promote themselves as. To me the proof is in the listening and that has matched well with a company that do not use their ears. But just one man’s opinion 😊
Yeah, I also find that Hegel over dampen their amp and that it negatively affects the sound but hey, to each their own.
Thx Jay for the review….now I know not to buy the Hegel H600. I agree that it is over-priced and designed by amateurs.
