I think princess Tutu is the best way between sailor moon and madoka D: it has a dark side which is reasonable and a beautiful plot twist for the second season
The first half is the first season which is 13 episodes and the second season is up to 38 episodes but they mash up together to make it 13 episodes so it’s 26 episodes together

This series reminded me a lot of the Fairy Tales I used to enjoy as a child. That and the truly badass amv you mentioned helped me make the gut choice to rush out and buy the anime (did it at an expo) and did not regret it. So wonderfully done. Dark and chilling, but still containing the sense of wonder and hope that defines Fairy Tales. Such a good series!
