This is extremely helpful for me as I sometimes tend to rush the rough sketch and focus mostly on details, so I waste time trying to perfect a drawing that is never going to look right as I didn't start off with a solid foundation

Oh, light bulb moment: I was not using two-point perspective (self-trained pre-Internet) and while my stokes and poses have life, they're often a little "off" and inauthentic in their weights. I also never had draft versions trying to make design and execution happen in same drawing. So glad your vid caught me in a teachable moment-thank you very much!

Thank you so much for this video. Learning perspective has drove me insane because no one's videos I've watched have actually explained how to apply perspective in my drawings. It's a simple dilemma of knowing how to learn it but not how to apply it.

    Hello Aaron!
I keep thanking people who invented internet cause I get to see this and can communicate with you, and you with us so easily, haha. Seriously you are such a great teacher, great personality, which is crucial for me, when I am learning something. I have this passion in me for animated films and characters, and just recently I shook off that "You are too old for this" feeling that everyone is giving me, and thanks to you I kind of pushed aside my graphic design "career" and finally got to work on something that really matters to me. I mean I draw and paint a lot, but I´ve never put so much energy into animating as I am now, so thank you so much.
I want to support you in every way, so now that I´ve discovered that your animation course is on sale, I am definitely going to buy it. Hopefully there´s enough time cause I still have to wait for my salary, haha.
Anyways, thank you for what you are doing I am pretty sure that you are helping a lot of people pursue their dreams. :)
    Love,
    Hana.

I think these examples are even drawn in 3 point perspective? The man is seen from slightly above and the cat from slightly beneath. This makes the examples quite complex, but beautifully drawn, you can tell Aaron knows his anatomy!

It would be awesome to see some tutorials on doing flight, especially how to position wings to get the movement right, how to actually - well, y'know - draw their range of motion correctly. If you had any tips for colouring wings nicely without having to spend a year on each feather, that would be awesome too.

    Thanks master !!
    really important advice !!!
Something that I saw in this perspective talk is that you stablished your vanishing points really far away, so that, the lines seem to be almost parallel (lines are converging just a bit), I mean, when I´m drawing, I usually put the vanishing points closer to the object (even when the perspective should not afect the form to much) , so the perspective is super evident, and I end up pulling my drawing out of the cone of vision.
    Thanks again, very useful insights.

Another home run Mr. Blaise, Thank you once again for all these practical lessons. I love that you do not shroud the lessons in mystery as many other art teachers have in the past. It is what it is. I have completed all your lessons from you free and bought animation courses, it has granted me much growth in my work, now i am wondering if you could possibly talk about animating more than one character in a scene, im in the middle of doing this and have used all the tools you have given us, but i wonder if there is anything that can make my/our workflow more efficient when it comes to multiple characters. How does it work when its just one animator slaving away as opposed to two or more characters in one scene being worked on by multiple artists. Thank you very much, hope my request is not too much to ask. God bless

Aaron, great vid. Thanks. Please make a few more on constructing the head in perspective. I understand that everyone develops their own style as to where they start and what comes next but your way of placing the side of the face and the face plain early on made looking at all if this very understandable. Thank you again.

I think the fact that perspective is so hard for students to actually apply in their work is due to it being taught in ways that are irrelevant to most of their drawings. In reality, the closeup perspective you need to get believability in portraits is what you did here, rough 2-point where the vanishing points are waaaay off the page. But there's not much way for students to practice that. Most of us just learn it by getting an eye for it. Digitally, they can practice by zooming way out and planting the 2 vanishing points but it's a burdensome way to learn. I suggest starting each drawing off with a cube or each form as a cube (which I think is basically how bridgeman teaches)

I am, for example, know all the basics about perspectiv but for me it´s really hard to make a human figure in perspective" and the most tutorials show 1. how to draw figures (without saying somthing about perspectiv) or 2. they teach the basics of perspective (how to make a cylinder, what´s a vanishing point, ...) but NOBODY speaks about the "using perspective in figuredrawing".

    *I have trouble calculating depth*
It's not that i can't see depth but rather in vidya games jumping from platforms to platforms for example, i ALWAYS miss.
This is translated in my artwork as its missing perspective, logical shading and highlighting.
How should i approach this problem?

    • @vuurmark
      @vuurmark 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

that is simply because a screen has not depth, even 3d games are 2D for our eyes. The best way is to use cues that are present in real life, such as shadows, lighting,etc... I always draw a shadow in perspective when drawing characters, it gives good grounding for the eyes.

When I draw a portrait from a reference picture from my phone or iPad
I always take inclinations for perspective, because I attend and artistic high school and this is what I’ve been taught.
My problem is TAKING THE INCLINATIONS CORRECTLY :( my hand always shakes, also because it’s easier to take proportions and inclinations from life drawing than with a phone and a pencil to draw a mini portrait.

    Hello Aaron,
You are a fantastic teacher and your videos are like incredible. I bought your human anatomy course and it's been truly helpful to me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and keeping it affordable for us students :)
I was wondering if you would be willing to do a course on perspective. I know it's very basic, which is maybe why I can't seem to find quality courses on it. A lot of these courses focus on the very, very basics, like drawing a box or a room, but doesn't seem to go further. I would be eternally grateful if there was a course that also covers shifting perspectives in animation, calculating depth and scales, shadows, planting your characters in space, etc. If there is one person who can pull this off, it's you, sir.
I know computers can already do that and there are perspective tricks you can do in Photoshop, but I would like to know how to do it without technology. You know... in case we don't have electricity anymore. ;)
Thank you so much for all that you do.
    Sincerely,
    Your student from Korea
