Abandoned City on an Island | Houses Built of Coral | Destination Adventure

  • I have seen many amazing things through my travels, but it is rare to see something as unique as this. This abandoned salt mine sits on an island six miles off the coast of Baja Mexico, and has the remains of houses and buildings constructed not of rock or brick, but of coral. In the desert, where traditional building supplies are non existent, locals made do with what they had. In this case, it was coral. My visit to Isla Carmen, brought with it a plethora of unique things to see and experience. The salt flats from the old mine have been left untouched for decades, and that alone was a sight I done even have words to describe. In the ghost town, there are remains of many different buildings. The old bank is still standing, some homes and much of the milling building as well. In the bay in front of the town, there are two shipwrecks and the remains of the old light house as well.
After my visit to the abandoned town, I slowly made my way back along the outside of the island, making sure to stop at each interesting thing I could see along the way. The beaches here are littered with history and mystery, and I only wish I had more time to explore them.

Ok, the salt mines at Isla Del Carmen were discovered by the Jesuit in 1698. The north end of the island has a bay named Bahia Salinas (Salt Bay) where the mines were located. In 1875 two brothers from La Paz gained control of the mine. There was a rail line of 2000 feet from the mine to a pier where the salt was loaded onto ships. At its peak, this was the largest salt mine in the world. It closed in 1984. Competition from the salt mine at Guerrero Negro on the west coast of Baja were said to cause its demise, the salt there already being on the Pacific. Much of the salt was exported to Japan.. So, evidently these are salt deposits rather than evaporation pits like those right at the mouth of the Colorado River.

@@Destination_Adventure When I was in my 20s to early 30's my mom was a travel Agent, and I spent a great many winter in Mexico on Fam Trips. I wish now, I have gone to the Baja instead, . The only non-tourist location I went to then (in the late 90's) was a trip to the Yucatan, to meet a woman I had met on a BBS, she was on the boarder between Mexico and Belize// Muchas Gracia,, mi amiga Your adventures have for me brought back some great memories of Mexico.

WOW, I had to backup the video quite a few times to get a second look at things! I think I'll bookmark this one so I can watch it again later, I had a stroke (brain aneurism) a couple of years ago so the video will be new again to me. This video had a lot of surprises. Thanks for taking us along.

I did a 10 day kayak trip out there, fisherman and boaters use tanks like those for water, otherwise they have to carry too much water along. Also, pop your boat, get stranded, and water is everywhere but not a drop to drink.

Hey Dustin. Mi esposa y yo, hemos visitado 25 estados de Mexico. Es un pais bellissimo. (Sorry dude, I like to throw a little Spanish into my comments. Our first exposure to Mexico was a motorhome trip down the Baja in 2011. We spoke no Spanish. Now we are both fluent. We visited 25 states over 9 months of travel in a 3 year period. 3 months each year.
We love following your adventures and hope to meet you someday. We live in the Okanagan now. We pull a teardrop with a Tesla and plan on exploring more of the Cariboo and kootenays next year. We may make it to puerta penasco this Christmas with our combo.
Stay safe on the road Dustin.

    Hey Dustin.
Epic little adventure. I'd love to explore that old town. The history! I always try and imagine what it would have been like in the hey day! So cool.
Good job on the "Trigger Fish." Here in Tasmania, we call them "Leather Jackets" due to their unique, shark-like skin. When cleaning, it is very easy to just peel off. The other name, not so commonly used nowadays, but was popular In the old days (my Nanna Brown always called them this), was "Butterfish". Due to the soft texture and taste of the fish. So yummy!
Thanks again for another great adventure, definitely my favourite channel.

@Destination Adventure Aren't they a badass little fish!? If it wasn't a "Trigger Fish"...it'd be a "Very strong mouthed buck toothed shell biter!".
As a child, one of my early fishing life lessons when I first discovered this fish, was "Don't touch Spike...and Definitely, don't put finger in mouth.." . I was quite young. Still have scar.
      Keep up the adventures.
