SF is a fishing town. For years the income was fishing exports(best fish tacos ever) and another big boost was the SCORE off road races. Overfishing in the Gulf had created a ban on fishing of some species. SF was hit hard by the bans. Tourism continued and racing, kinda helped keep things going. When the pandemic hit, it all but killed many small Mexican towns along the Baja. Tourists stopped and even races had a lot of scrutiny for less people involved. My all time memory of racing off road was in SF. Back when Zoo Road was the huge MPG, parting of the human sea.

Hey Dustin on your way back to Williams Lake from Mexico you should try to stop in at a place called Telefone Cove so you go in to Laughlin and then turn at the lights to head to Las Vegas go up the hill watch for the sign turn right go down about 7 miles to a beautiful beach campground has pet toilets garbage collection big dumpster been really a beautiful place launch your boat and you can go up the Colorado river to the Hoover dam have fun in Mexico buddy this is Dennis from Horsefly

Hwy 3 on the Baja peninsula is epic Dustin. They have been slowly paving the road, now at Bahia Gonzaga. I dearly hope you are able to visit Coco at Coco's Corner. He is true legend. Health issues are taking him to Ensenada on occasion, but he's an amazing fellow. Try to check Coco's when he's actually there.
I wonder if later in life, you could work a sort of "one way trip" on a cruise ship to it's destination, then stay behind at the destination to explore that area, then work a return trip back home...And do that sort of exploring using the cruise industry to provide your transportation, and your cruise pay, and savings, and patreon funding to support your future travels. that would be cool for you to be able to stay a for few weeks in the Bahamas, for example, then film adventures, and catch a ride back for another cruise ship gig to another destination, and so on....
