    First went in 1950 and my dad sat me on the perimeter wall at the Cross Street end. Although my wife and I left Chesterfield in 1971 still an avid supporter and was last in town on Easter Monday for the Kidderminster debacle

    My team, great memories there. The new stadium is great but it'll never have the soul that Saltergate had.

    On a wet Tuesday night they let us into the Main Stand and we few 'Gasheads' were able to make a tremendous noise, beating our feet on the wooden flooring!
    After he'd promised to do so if one of our players, David Pritchard, who never scored did so, my mate John Spilsbury and two other madmen walked home to Bristol (for charity).
    Saltergate starred as 'The Baseball Ground' in the movie 'The Damned United'.
    With it's vaulted roofs on two of the stands, their new ground is one of the more attractive of the modern stadia (like Huddersfield Towns' and Bolton Wanderers').
    Up The Gas!

    Thanks really enjoyed that I really miss saltergate just to correct you the 10-0 defeat was away at Gillinghams Priestfield stadium and not at saltergate.... I was there that September day in 1987 haha. My fondest memory of saltergate was the first match of the 1969/70 CHESTERFIELD V ASTON VILLA season we had just got promoted from the old 4th division and villa had been relegated from the old second division Villa supporters took over the spion cop that day they where getting over excited prior to kick off and villa manager Vic crowe left the dressing room and stood behind the goal urging villa supporters to behave and calm down I was a wide eyed 13 year old stood on the cop with my 6ft long chesterfield scarf draped around my neck surrounded by thousands of villa supporters great memories unfortunately spireites lost the game 2-3.... I recently went a stroll around the housing estate and found the spot where I stood that day in someone's back garden haha iam 66 years old now but the memories of that hot August afternoon in 1970 will stay with me forever... Thanks for your vidios really enjoy them mate 👍

      Hi mate I think 10-0 is our heviest defeat in our entire history but yes it was away at Gillingham I was there very humiliating.... Not sure what the heviest defeat is at saltergate I'll have to research that one although I do remember us conceding 6 goals at saltergate against some team can't remember who though.... Losing my memory due to old age 😂😂😂😂

      Another great memory at saltergate was the goal that never was against Wimbledon FC back in the 80s I think.... We had metal back stanchions on the goals in those days Wimbledon scored a perfectly legitimate goal the ball hit the back stanchion and rebounded out of the goal and the referee waved play on... Every one in saltergate knew it was a goal..... Apart from the referee lol 😂😂😂😂😂😂

      Arthur Cox was manager at that time and he knew Villa had a couple of wingers who would be a problem so he told Jimmy the groundsman to bring the touchline in a yard and not to mow the grass for a week "That'll slow em down" he said

    The 10-0 defeat was at Gillingham. I was there. A fairer result would have been 14-3. Our 'keeper, Scottish International Jim Brown, was injured and the gaffer wouldn't take him off. The gaffer, Kevin Randall wore a black arm band for the whole of the following week. At 7-0, many Chesterfield fans walked out but I stayed behind the goal because I knew I was going to witness history.

      @historyoffootball87  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was informed of that yesterday. On their website though it says record loss 0-10 so I assumed they were the home team.

      They wanted something to look like the 1970s and it was the tattiest most unmodernised ground they could find. I think it was around the same time that Saltergate was voted as having The Most Disgusting Toilets in the league. We've got a shiny new ground now and the pies are very nice, but I miss the old days!

      @@historyoffootball87 Yes sorry I wish I'd read the comments before hand as I can see someone has already mentioned it. Just at the time it was a difficult result to take, and even to this day I've never seen a football league team take a beating like we did that day. It wasn't a criticism and I fully appreciate your efforts to make these videos as I know all the work and research that goes into them.
