Recently had a stay in the hospital due to covid related pneumonia. Was told that the best diet for healing was high protein. Dietitian still would place a "high protein" Ensure on my tray. Never drank them. The gal visited me wondering why I never drank them. Showed her the nutrition label where the protein was 13 g and the SUGAR was 38! Asked why the 3 to 1 ratio and really no answer but she tolerated my discussion about the eggs and bacon on my plate having more nutrients than that soy based drink; even with the artificial vitamins.

I think this is your best video so far. Very practical information for understanding what should be eaten for fuel, what should be avoided completely, and what should be enjoyed occasionally.
I had so many physical and mental health issues growing up and continue to feel the effects today. I wonder how much of that could have been avoided by not eating junk food every day.
THANKS for both the helpful, necessary information AND the non-watered-down, straight approach, cuss words included! We need more "tellin' it like it is" !!
You nailed it again Dr Berry! When people I know talk about junk food they invariably refer to fast food joints. Really the focus should be on the middle isles in the grocery store. One category not mentioned was fish. I grew up in north Norway and the main source of protein was fish, meat was for Sunday dinner. In the summer when wild salmon was available there was seven days a week fish.
What about canned fish - sardines, mackerel, tuna? They are shelfstable, ready-to-eat out of the package, can last quite a long time until you open the can. And what about various powders like wheatgrass juice or cacao, which can last a long time without refrigeration even after being opened?
I have been watching this channel from when it had 20,000 subscribers. My arthritis is gone. Knee pain - gone. Chronic Headaches are gone. I am almost 100% carnivore now with little to no carbs. Major problem with modern society which is completely unavoidable is unhealthy eating which causes so much physically and mental health problems. All done for big profits for the major corporations. Thank you Dr. Berry for your informative eye-opening videos.
Hi Ken, Good video, as always.. But, question: in another video you talk about Sardines in a can in water, skin on, bone in, to be a natural super food. Now, Sardines in a can are: - processed (cooked and canned) - from a factory - super long shelf life So… is canned Sadines a (super) food or junk food? What about other canned foods? (I think I know your answer, but for the record..)
The difference is, here you've only the Sardines and water, no added (unnecessary) ingredients such as soy oil and such. If they were junk food, there'd be all sorts of added ingredients.
It would be really cool if the FDA created standards around what qualifies as Junk Food and required food manufacturers to label the food as junk food if the product does not meet certain nutritional standards.
So many people are clueless. Of course, not those of us who pay attention to Drs. Berry, Fung, Tarman, Lustig, etc. I tried explaining to my father-in-law that I don't eat foods with added sugar. Shocking, isn't it? My mom went to nursing school back in the 1960s and she said the kitchens had huge vats of real chicken soup cooking. How nice would it be to get real healing food while you are recovering in the hospital?

Hello to all of you. The next MC DOOF (means stupid in german) is 5 min drive away i have been inside once 8 years ago, ate some french fries and was ill for a week! Since i started my ketogenic journey September 2018 i feel so much better! As Mrs. Barbara in her comment stated, the body reacts when one eats rubbish. Yes i admit i eat the food at a friend's dinner. I eat sometime some normal chocolate mostly 80 or 90%. I follow omad since 2 years with a feeding window of 2 to max 6 hours. Since 4 days i have a little laundry bucket with water on the balcony (we have around 0 degrees Celsius) and in the morning i bathe me feed for 10 min in the really cold water! It help so much! We receive so much information to improve our health and avoid poor decisions. Thankfully Chrissy from Austria
Even artisanal cheeses are made in (usually rather simple) factories (and some are tinted with dye, though usually from annatto seeds). So is almost all butter nowadays. There are cheeses (and definitely some cheese-like substances) that qualify as junk food, and many that don’t. I wouldn’t say FACTORIES MEAN JUNK FOOD, but often that’s true. It depends what happens in the factory.
Common ingredients we find in junk food: High fructose syrup Glucose Added sugars Canola oil and vegetable seed oil Natural flavors / artificial flavors Also they sell for cheap.
I have a mother in law who just moved in with us. She just had her gall bladder removed . She has always been a sugar junky. She say’s I might as well not live if I can’t have my coke and cookies etc. She is 80 years old and extremely stubborn. I’m gonna show her this video to see you if it may help! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😫😫😫😫
Well, I lived on this for a solid two years. Nothing but. AND even added milk and a scoop of ice-cream to it. I had one meal a day. Was homeless and thought this was a yummy healthy alternative. My doctor said I was the fattest skinniest person they ever met. But my health did improve.... to a point... so you can imagine how unhealthy my diet was before... and I was fat. It took keto / carno to "actually" make me thin. It's a good thing fasting is such a huge part, or I would never afford it.
A few years ago when I was pre - Carnivore diet, I was in Nepal. I had some packaged “peanut butter crackers” for snacks. Some chickens were scrounging around for their food so I threw them some crumbs. They wouldn’t touch it! They had more sense than I did!!
I have a jar of vegan mayonnaise made with canola oil that I left out of the fridge. I decided to do an experiment. It has been sitting for six months at room temperature and still looks like when I took it out of the fridge.
Sort of like finding a fast food french fry under the seat of your car that's been there for who knows how long but still looks exactly like it did the day you bought it. (Side note: I haven't had fast food in 2 years, but I do travel a lot for work and back in the day drive through was a regular thing for me.)
I guess some preserves made with real food are shelf stable (more or less) and still full of nutrition. Things like anchovies, salted cod, smoked salmon, jerky, sauerkraut,... not jam or marmalade, though, full of sugar!
I just recently read that honey on the supermarket shelves has lost all of it's natural health benefits from processing. I recognize it's not keto but in case someone wants a tiny bit, use raw honey not processed supermarket shelf honey. Also, milk is fortified and cheeses are also better if they're raw cheese. Raw milk is illegal unfortunately unless it's from your cow.
Laws are different in every state on raw milk. It's legal in many states and sold in stores there, 9 states. You can buy direct from the farmer in 17 states.
@@dacisky Yes, junk food. Milk too. I've been keto for 7 yrs. and learned that when I started. Same with real maple syrup or anything that tastes sweet for that matter.
Thank you Dr Berry! Great peice. Can you do a video on Hypoglycemia, what it is, how you get it, and reverse it. Why it is a pre-curser to Diabetes. Thank you in advance!
Cain and Abel come to my mind. Abel was a farmer growing real food. Cain was a shepherd raising meat. Both had their place in God’s order. It’s only in recent years when crops and meat were MODIFIED and injected with man made chemicals did our food supply tank. Bread a hundred years ago was an acceptable food but not today. So, Dr. Barry is correct, as usual. He speaks TRUTH, God bless him!
I know this question isn't junk food related, but had a concern of having my gallbladder removed in November 2019. After watching Keto and Carnivore ( your's and Neisha's) videos, I've since learned about bile salts. My question is, if eating fatty proteins is hurting or interfering with the production of my bile content; therefore, needing or not needing to take bile salts for better regulation and absorbtion of certain vitamins?
Speaking the truth. I have a friend who is struggling with diabetes, trying many different meds to control his blood sugar. Dr has told him to eat low fat and lots of whole grains. I'm worried about him and told him to start watching Dr Berry.
Great video, and a sad commentary that we need this explanation to help us figure out what is real food. My only addition only I would add is we now have to be aware of are foods that don’t have labels such as farm raised meats and compromised olive oil? It should not be this complicated! Shop local and as close to the source as possible is my only suggestion. Thanks!
Doctor Ken, your advice has helped my eat healthier since I discovered you many months ago. Once or twice in your Carnivore diet videos you mention that if you cannot afford the best meats, it's OK to eat hot dogs or other factory-processed meat products. Is this no longer the case? Hot dogs would seem to fit the criteria as junk food now.

Sneaked through: Raisins/dried fruit, oatmeal, roasted nuts/seeds. None of them hit all 7 categories. But these foods do hit 3 or 4. And one thing that is a great sign of a junk food, there are brand commercials and advertisements for it.
I did an experiment to show my boss how nasty a National brand white bread was. I kept a slice in my locker for about 6 months in a baggie. It never got moldy. It of course shocked him, but did nothing to stop him from eating garbage every day. And he proudly boasts he'll never stop. It's ahead scratcher to me why ppl don't care about their health.
The problem is that people think their stomach is some kind of balloon that needs to be filled with whatever fills it. Their goal is to fill the balloon. They don't realize the stomach and digestive system is a sensitive mechanism for delivering nutrition throughout the body. It's fine to eat until you are full, but the priority should be knowing exactly what you're eating and how its nutrition affects your body.
I think it would be a good idea to make a check-list of these 8 points, then take it to the grocery store and work through the list for items that you see on the shelf there. Should be quite educational.
1.Very long shelf life 2.More than 5 ingredients or any preservatives 3.Didn't exist 150yrs ago 4.Devoid of nutrition 5.Fortified 6.Requires no preparation (and shelf stable) 7.Producing company needs flavor specialists

Don’t be fooled by restaurants either. I got an egg omelet at IHOP thinking it was just eggs only to find out later that they add pancake batter to make it fluffier. I was in the bathroom quite a while after that because I wasn’t used to eating that junk anymore.
It's getting to where if I don't personally know who prepared it, I won't eat it. On the plus side, this encourages me to go to local mom and pop restaurants and actually get to know the people who work there.

You forget the most important sign that something is junkfood. If it has sugar in it. Also fermented vegetables have a long shelf life and contain probiotics.
Do most of your shopping from the outside perimeter isles in the store. That's where they keep the perishable items and those tend to be most nutrisious

Good post, thanks! One question about your definition of food as being grown from the dirt or eating what grows from the dirt. That definition leaves out animals that eat other animals (e.g., some seafood, and several omnivores). Would you consider eating carnivores (bad choice of words, what do you call a fish that eats fish? Cannibal? LOL) unhealthy? Thanks!
Extra points for the use of "obfuscated" and "simulacrum!" Thanks for being concerned about people's health and not being afraid to be honest about what is going on in our food system here in the U.S. My main criteria for this is the 5 ingredient thing. That's a really great way to tell if something is real or natural.
The only food I can think of that may pass would be any traditional flat breads, these have been around along time although modern breads from today's grains are nowhere near the same

Many of us used junk food as an escape from traumatic childhood experiences that we carry with us unknowingly and need to face.
Just acknowledging trauma is a big step. Healthy and Happy Healing going forward ❤️
Jay check out Dr. Georgia Ede TH-cam vids - all will be made clear and you won't have to wonder.
THANKS for both the helpful, necessary information AND the non-watered-down, straight approach, cuss words included! We need more "tellin' it like it is" !!
I can remember when junk food was called party food because that would be the only time you would eat it, and there wasn’t much of it floating around.
So true, when I was a kid my mother allowed us coke and potato chips once a year on New Years Eve. That was a treat, but now I can't stand it!
yep, we never had it in the house as kids unless it was birthday or something. And we were all "skinny" lol.
Very grateful to Doctor Ken Berry. Thank you very - VERY much! I share your videos with all my friends and family 🏆🌎🥇
This week went to the hospital to get a CAC screening. I was shocked that so many of the staff was obese. If I was a betting man, I would wager that most of them were on statins. Physician, heal thyself.
Listening to Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. David Diamond, and Dr. Paul Mason I have lost 80 pounds.
Thank you. Thank you Thank you.
Major problem with modern society which is completely unavoidable is unhealthy eating which causes so much physically and mental health problems. All done for big profits for the major corporations. Thank you Dr. Berry for your informative eye-opening videos.
Hi Ken,
Good video, as always..
But, question: in another video you talk about Sardines in a can in water, skin on, bone in, to be a natural super food.
Now, Sardines in a can are:
- processed (cooked and canned)
- from a factory
- super long shelf life
So… is canned Sadines a (super) food or junk food?
Later that day, he offered me some tres leches cake. The next morning he made pancakes. I didn't partake. He cooks everything in corn oil, too.
Dr. Berry..the only thing i have to say is that you open my eyes, every time i watch your youtube videos. Not only that i learn how to turn my body around with PROPER HUMAN DIET/OMAD FASTING, but also by fallow all your advices,i lost iver 45 lbs in less
than 3 months, also my diabeties is now clear,my blood preasure back to normal, and my thyroid is way better. Thank you sir from the bottom of my heart. God bless you and God bless your family🙏😀👌👍👏🤝. I will allways respect you for the rest of my life. And that's becouse i could never and i will never for last 51 years can NOT find doctor like you sir👌👌👌👌👌
If they have to tell you how healthy it is for you, like "Heart Healthy", it's likely junk food. If they have to tell you, "Now made with...", it's likely junk food.
Yes, that's a good example.
Sadly enough, if the UN and WHO are trying to ban it, then it is probably real food
Omg, went on work trip and totally went on junk food. That sugar took over my brain. Back on track today. Thank you for your support!!!
I'm glad you work up! Now you know better, right?
@Michael J it sure is, I usually am pretty good. My team knows I only eat 1 meal a day so they don’t even ask anymore. I was just weak this trip. Office was full of Christmas goodies. Once I gave in it was game over. I’ve just got to keep reminding myself of how sugar makes me feel so I don’t cave next time ❤️
Same thing happens to me, it is hard to eat right in the go.
When I was in the ICU,they offered me Cherroes and Boost as part of my "healthy" breakfast. I only ate the eggs. I was shocked that even in hospitals, junk was served, including cookies, and potato chips!
Me too. Unbelievable.
Shocking, isn't it? My mom went to nursing school back in the 1960s and she said the kitchens had huge vats of real chicken soup cooking. How nice would it be to get real healing food while you are recovering in the hospital?
Hospital administration exists to make money, not to heal people, that’s why hospitals are bad outside of the worst emergencies
Doc Berry... you are one of the most brilliant nutritional researchers in the world
True :-)
How about Keto Chow?…I just looked at the label…made in a factory, many ingredients. Natural flavors…thank you…I have lost 145 lbs in four years, my wife 80 on Keto, we are in maintenance now…thank you for your channel!
Amazing content! Thank you for all your work
Hello to all of you.
Thanks!
Thanks very much Marie!
Thanks again for helping us keep on track, Doc, you're the best! 🤩
Not in Europe. Great cheese here. Also you can make your own cheese. Its tasty and healthy
Common ingredients we find in junk food:
High fructose syrup
Glucose
Added sugars
Canola oil and vegetable seed oil
Natural flavors / artificial flavors
Also they sell for cheap.
Thank you Dr. I've been want to change what eat for better health. This video helped me recognize the good foods. Thank you
Don't shop the aisles (all processed), but stick with what is sold on the walls (dairy, butter, cream, eggs, meat, cheese and vegetables).
Great video looking forward to you guys next live missing neisha this morning ☕☀️ have a beautiful day
I have a jar of vegan mayonnaise made with canola oil that I left out of the fridge.
Ewwww!
@@thartwig26 Let us know! Avocado mayo is too expensive for me to experiment with! 😂
Honey is just as bad as eating plane old sugar. Dr. Berry has a video on this.
@@rhiahlMT Yes, I use to be able to buy raw goats milk by buying a share. Not cows milk though. Where I am now, I can't buy either.
@@dacisky Yes, junk food. Milk too. I've been keto for 7 yrs. and learned that when I started. Same with real maple syrup or anything that tastes sweet for that matter.
You sarcasm is so funny. The corporations that made it for you so lovingly. 🤣🤣. Just love you snd Neisha. ❤️
Thank you Dr. Berry. Question: What about nuts and seeds? They don't spoil quickly and they can be eaten readily.
I don’t remember who taught me to not eat cow shit, but I’m very grateful to that person and to you Dr. Berry.
Slight correction, Abel was the shepherd, Cain the tiller of soil. Genesis 4:2💕 And I do agree, Dr. Berry is awesome!👍🏼👍🏼
Ah, wholegrains. My favourite faux health food.
Thanks!
Wow I was so uneducated on this junk food idea. Thank you doc. Wow. Saving and sharing this video
Exception to shelf stable rule.
I have grass fed ground beef that I freeze dried myself. It is shelf stable yet still real food.
Thank you Dr, Berry for all that you do.

Great info, but for #6: Nuts, coffee beans etc can be in transit on ships for months, then on a supermarket shelf for months. Junk food?
Healthy junk food?
They don't qualify for the other points. One ingredient only- not a laundry list like on packaged shelf-stable zombie food.
Apples often take up to 14 months from being picked to the supermarket shelf, pears are around 8 months on average.
Possible/slight exception: nuts (e.g. macadamia) or seeds (e.g. chia). Hard to think of anything else though!
Great video. I would include fresh seafood in the same group as food that comes from the earth or graze.
Hello Dr.Berry!🙋🏾♀️
VERY GOOD COMMENTARY and INFORMATION!👍🏿
Thank you!
1.Very long shelf life
2.More than 5 ingredients or any preservatives
3.Didn't exist 150yrs ago
4.Devoid of nutrition
5.Fortified
6.Requires no preparation (and shelf stable)
7.Producing company needs flavor specialists
Good info. You left out, if it swims in lakes, Rivers’s or oceans.
You are the best Dr. Berry!
I'm eating 650g of whole carbs every day ulcerative colitis total remission no meds and I feel fantastic. I wish everyone the best if your on a healing journey.
Don’t be fooled by restaurants either. I got an egg omelet at IHOP thinking it was just eggs only to find out later that they add pancake batter to make it fluffier. I was in the bathroom quite a while after that because I wasn’t used to eating that junk anymore.
They are taking away your choice.
It's getting to where if I don't personally know who prepared it, I won't eat it.
On the plus side, this encourages me to go to local mom and pop restaurants and actually get to know the people who work there.
@@sanautin I was making a quick trip to another state to visit my sister who was very ill. It was a last minute decision to meet my other sister for breakfast on the way to see my sister in the hospital. Usually I go local or read the online nutrition menu first.
@@Bfdifan-j8x You can ask IHOP to make you eggs without the pancake batter. I found that out from a waitress there a few weeks ago. So I ordered an omelet. It was pretty good
That happened to me so I looked up IHOP and OHHHHH that's why, pancake mix in the omelet.
You forget the most important sign that something is junkfood. If it has sugar in it. Also fermented vegetables have a long shelf life and contain probiotics.
Do most of your shopping from the outside perimeter isles in the store. That's where they keep the perishable items and those tend to be most nutrisious
How can it be that people really don’t know what junk food is. They obviously haven’t been listening to youDc Berry. 👍💖🇬🇧
Great video Dr. Berry!!
Thanks for this information, Dr Berry!
Thanks doc, more than 3 ingredients and I don't eat it. Started carnivore May 2020, weighed 287. July 2021 weighed 233, all labs great, off statins and hyper tension meds. PS. Read your Lies books years ago before you got "ripped"!
Another great vid, thank you, but do you have a base drum under the table or are you tapping the table in your excitement, because there is a base sound on the vid, just a thought
Thank you, Dr. Berry. You have helped me so much.
This is a great break down, thank you Dr Berry
I used to eat these junk food, not anymore. Used to eat protein bars because I thought it was healthy. So I’m so thankful for all your videos Dr. Berry. Thank you.
"One was food and was not food (for humans...) I love that distinction!
Thanks!
Thank you very much for this clarifying video! I found it very helpful indeed!
Very nicely edited and helpful video. Thank you. You help millions of us You Tubers.
This video is gold!
Extra points for the use of "obfuscated" and "simulacrum!" Thanks for being concerned about people's health and not being afraid to be honest about what is going on in our food system here in the U.S. My main criteria for this is the 5 ingredient thing. That's a really great way to tell if something is real or natural.
As a 61 year old country boy, if you grow it,catch it or kill it. It's not junk food
The only food I can think of that may pass would be any traditional flat breads, these have been around along time although modern breads from today's grains are nowhere near the same
Awesome job Dr.Berry keep up the great work very informative.Happy Holidays.
