  • Welcome to another I/O Sam’s Ultimate Guide! This time on the chopping block we have #TheKeyDotCo #Portico : TKC’s entry-level 65%, gasket-mounted, hot-swappable injection molded mechanical keyboard targeted at enthusiasts on a budget.
    First, we’ll go through its design, quality, sound and software features. Then, we’ll play with the “Tempest Tape” and the “PE foam” mods to see if they can improve the Portico’s sound.
    And finally, we’ll go through its pros and cons, and analyze how it compares to the ever-growing competition (NK65 Entry Edition, KBDfans KBD 67 Lite, Ikki68, GMMK Pro and Keychron Q1) in the red-hot market for entry level #MechanicalKeyboards targeted at [aspiring] enthusiasts.
    In the sound test chapters, you’ll also be able to hear how the Portico sounds with different switches (TKC Tangerines, Cherry Hyperglides, Infinity Key Cows and Glorious Pandas) and keycaps (ABS and PBT), both in stock form and modded.

    This is the most in-depth review I have ever seen on a keyboard

    • @IOSam
      @IOSam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hehe... Yeah, I know... I did go a bit overboard here... 😂
      But that is the goal of my "ultimate guides": cover as much as possible of the product without worrying at all about video length.
      Naturally, these videos take an ungodly amount of time to produce, so I'm not going to be able to make many of these per year. But I'll do these for products I happen to believe deserve the effort.
      I consider the Portico to be the first real gasket mounted entry level “budget” custom keyboard in the market. So, although it didn’t get as much recognition as it deserved for that feat, I decided to do my part to leave THE most complete review/guide for this historic piece of kit on the record.

    I really enjoy seeing other comparisons to the keyboard you are currently looking at. I'm laughing at the "buy something to mod the crap out of it". I am currently working on a tecware phantom and it's been a ton of work. I wish I had found your channel before purchasing it. But I am glad I found your channel since your mods and input on how or why to do something has become invaluable for me.

    • @IOSam

      I think a product review is never complete if you don't at least mention the competition around the same price tier to inform the viewer about his/her options. So, that is something I ALWAYS do on my videos. So, I'm happy to know viewers like you also appreciate this (and all of my other commentary and mod suggestions)!
      And on the topic of "modding the crap out" of a keyboard, there is one more of those videos dropping here on the channel this coming Monday... Stay tuned! ;)

    I love these in-depth dives into these boards! I personally picked up a KBD67 Lite bluetooth a while ago in addition to my GMMK Pro, but still learned a lot from this Portico video!
    One thing with the Glorious Pandas is that they are notorious for their ping (leaf? switch? both?). At least on my GMMK Pro, the PE foam helps my U4T Boba tactile switches a lot!

    • @IOSam
      @IOSam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!!! And the KBD67 Lite video is coming (it will be another doozy!! ;)...
      The Glorious Pandas' ping is definitely from their leaf springs (which is much harder to mute than the coil spring). So yeah... with Pandas you always have to use some type of foam between the Plate and the PCB to either mute the pings, or to bury it (as in the case of the PE foam).

    • @IOSam
      @IOSam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      😂 Thank you!!! Got a good laugh out of your comment!
      And yes, the goal of the channel is to cover all things "I/O" (all sorts of PC peripherals including storage, A/V, retro-tech, etc). It's just that after my first video the whole keyboards thing kinda took over the channel, but I am currently working on a couple of videos about using gaming mice for productivity for example. Then I'll also cover some H.O.T.A.S. flight sticks from Thrustmaster and Logitech in flight/space sim games.
      While I wasn't able to dedicate the required amount of time to produce at least 1 video per month in 2021, that is changing in 2022... So, stay tuned! ;)

    • @IOSam
      @IOSam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh well… It turns out YT sometimes can be less favorable to the small guys… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
      But having members of this community actively searching for this channel (thank you Austin! 🙏) is far more important to me than being favored by the YT algorithm, so it’s all good!
      And yeah… While the Portico was quickly buried under so many other entry-level keyboard releases in 2021, it was in fact the first board of this category to do gaskets right. Thus, it definitely deservers this badge of honor!

    • @IOSam

      Thank you so much!!! The reason why I don't test these enthusiast keyboards with clikies is because they mostly cover the keyboard's own sound.
      But, while I don't particularly like Cherry MX Blue style clicky switches (I find them too loud and unrefined), I do like other non-MX clickies.
      I have a video project where I'll cover my favorite MX compatible clicky (Kailh Box White) and a bunch of other future videos focused on classic vintage clickies such as Hi-tek "space invaders" and Alps. Stay tuned! ;)

      I am currently working on a review of another model (a 75% GK) from Epomaker, but as soon as I publish that one, I'll be in touch with them to arrange samples of these new models from Akko that are hitting the market.

      Hey Steve! Thank you man!!! As for my long-delayed review of the Q1, I do apologize for the fact that it didn’t come out when I was planning (many life events got in the way)! Having said that, I have been reworking the concept of that review for an upcoming video (I figured that a simple review at this point makes little sense considering how popular this board has been and how many reviews have been published about it already).
      But the video is definitely coming out next year, although the review portion will be condensed and I will spend more time on the modding chapter. I’ll also try to cover the differences between both the v1 and v2 of the Q1.

      @@IOSam That would be awesome! I have been looking at either the Q1 or the GMMK Pro with Zilent V2s or Sakurio for the GF (she hates all sound) and with Clickiez or maybe Glorious pandas for me. It's quite the jump for us to get into the hobby (I'm pretty sure it's going to be expensive!) But I think we have a good idea on what we are looking for and your videos are incredibly helpful in learning what the hobby is all about and getting us comfortable enough with it to make the plunge! At this point, anything is better than my rattly old k70! Again, thanks for what you do, and the rest of the guys on here are right, your audio and video quality is just awesome!

      @IOSam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@letsgetsteve Thanks again Steve!!! Feedback like that is aways appreciated!
      As for your two builds, I can tell you in advance that the GMMK Pro makes a fantastic silent keyboard! So if you do indeed go with Zeal silent switches (or even something cheaper like Gazzew Boba U4 or Bobagum) and put some sorbothane under the PCB (like I showed on my Silent Build video 👉th-cam.com/video/3s4ruFFqmqo/w-d-xo.html ) on a GMMK Pro without any other mods (other than some stabs tuning), you’ll get a dead silent keyboard.
      For your clicky or thocky board though, I think the Q1 is indeed a better choice, since it is easier to tune it for sound than the GMMK Pro.
      But if you happen to need any tips on the build process, drop the question on my sub-reddit (www.reddit.com/r/IOSam ) and I'll be glad to help out!

    I really regret for not getting complete kit with terminal green case, PBT Keycaps and Kiwi switches for 200USD. It was too good of a deal. Recently I tried this board of fellow community member in a keyboard meet and I loved it !! May be will try to get my hands in it somewhere down the line and see how it actually pans out Vs KBD67 lite. I Am too broke after buying too many keycaps , switches, boards.
    The way the industry is moving , I am sure that someone is gonna release a 65% gasket mounted kit for less than 100 USD soon ( Although as of now, KBD 67 lite B Stock is the best deal under 100 USD)

      Thank you Sam!!! Nice to hear this! And yeah... That $200 kit was a terrific deal indeed!
      I still think TKC will come out with a V2 of this board and hopefully they'll address some of its weaknesses to make it even better. I'm also waiting on my KBD67 Lite and very curious to see how they stack up.
      And while the current crazy demand for these types of boards is not a good incentive for vendors to lower prices, I still believe that at some point down the road we will get a sub-$100 gasket keyboard...

    Great video as always, Sam! I wish there was an in-stock affordable plastic semi-custom keyboard, they just sound much better! Preferably with no gap between the arrow keys and bottom row though ;P
    I noticed in the video you said it's faster to use dedicated arrow keys over a function layer, but is this really true? I have only used full size keyboards, but I keep wondering if it isn't faster to always keep all keys you use close to your fingers, if possible. Again, I have no experience with this, but I have thought about trying an auto-hotkey script and using caps lock + wasd for arrow keys, since I like to be able to use them one-handed. Speaking of auto-hotkey, can you tell a difference between using auto-hotkey scripts and having a natively fully programmable keyboard, for example, in terms of speed?

    • @IOSam
      @IOSam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks man! And I share your frustration about how hard it is to get these entry level keyboards at the moment... Group-buys and Pre-orders are real pain!
      And you ask lots of good/relevant questions here! When I state that dedicated arrow keys are easier to use than when under a secondary layer, I'm thinking more like the average user who's not used to multiple layers of course. Once you memorize the commands and positions of secondary key functions under multiple layers, I'd say you can be as fast (or faster) than with dedicated keys on larger keyboard layouts. But you might need a few days of practice to get there.
      The example you gave of using Caps Lock as a function key to activate I, J, K and L as arrows is exactly what I do on my travel 60% board (my Razer Huntsman Mini I covered a few videos back) and I can indeed zip through work when typing on that little board! So, your point is valid.
      And your question about Auto-hotkey is very timely as well! A few months back I had a long conversation with another viewer (when I posted my video about the Akko TKL) precisely about how to use Auto-hotkey to turn ANY keyboard into a reprogrammable keyboard.
      By the end I decided to write the script for a video where I will cover exactly that topic. But the "shorter" answer to your question is this:
      Auto-hotkey is an insanely powerful tool! Once you learn how to reprogram keyboards using it, it becomes an indispensable tool (specially for programmers and advanced excel users that rely heavily on macros). The issue with it is the steep learning curve (which I hope to alleviate a bit with my video). I use auto-hotkey with vintage keyboards that send non-standard scan codes to Windows and it works PERFECTLY!
      Having said that, having a fully programable keyboard (either by a proprietary software or through QMK/VIA) is an advantage in the sense that these are easier and quicker to "hit the ground running" even for a newbie. Besides, Auto-hotkey cannot create layers on keyboards like you can with QMK/VIA for example, which is a big limitation (that you can work around by creating different scripts or binary files for different use cases for example, which is something I intend to cover on my guide).
      So, in the end, a reprogrammable keyboard takes the cake in terms of convenience and ease/speed of use for most people.

    • @Zentennen
      @Zentennen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IOSam Thanks! I was thinking of creating "layers" by using different autohk variables to have a numpad both around wasd and ijkl, for example. I'm looking forward to your video!

    • @IOSam
      @IOSam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Zentennen Yes. Creating (and switching between) multiple autohk scripts is precisely the workaround I had in mind. I usually turn my autohotkey routines into binaries that I can run on any Windows machine, but you can simply use the AutoHotkey application to quickly switch between scripts (one for alpha and one for numbers on the U, I, O, J, K, L, M, < and > keys for example). But maybe there is an even better (and more advanced) way to achieve the same thing... I'll definitely have to dig deeper (beyond my comfort zone :) on AutoHotKey!

    Yo Sam, can you speak about usb coiled cables? What I need, who are the best, what need to put an eye on idk ….. I’m building a coiled cable from scratch so it is pretty interesting the type of connectors and materials wow.

    • @IOSam
      @IOSam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My longest running video project so far is exactly about making your own coiled cables… But it is taking a looong time! 😂 What I can tell you now is that there is a bit of trial and error for you to get them right. But the main lessons I’ve learned are these: 1) use an oven instead of a heat gun (more consistent results in about 15 minutes); 2) get a proper aluminium rod with collars to hold the cable as tight as possible (this is super important for good results!); 3) get a cable tester (you don’t want to fry your keyboard if you solder the wires in the wrong order or if there is a short-circuit). I have links for all of these things on my Razer Huntsman Mini modding video description ( th-cam.com/video/8mtycblLFQk/w-d-xo.html ).
      As for connectors I have used both GX16 and XLR. XLRs are bulky, but I like them better for their ruggedness and ease to plug/unplug on my desk, but for more aesthetic cables, GX16 look nicer.
