I wish my dad, who did this in the 50's, had been around to watch this. He did not mind his service in the army, the furthest he got was West Germany. But many fought in Korea, Suez, Malaya and other conflicts and performed well, even though the British Army institutionally did not like conscription. He said you should never volunteer for anything, if they asked 'can anyone play the piano' anyone saying 'yes' would end up shifting one from one end of the NCO's mess to the other!
But one of his comrades DID volunteer for something and ended up in Hong Kong! Before mass air travel, overseas holidays were only for the rich, that was like a trip into space. Dad did see death however, on large NATO exercises in West Germany, a breech explosion in a Bofors Gun killed the crew, others crushed by a tank. However his abiding memory of a freezing German winter was his platoon being holed up in barn and supplied with ham and Schnappes by a kindly farmer

basic train in the modern british army has not changed much my basic training in 1999 was pretty much the same bar the uniform and equipment
