I leave for Basic Training for the Canadian Forces in 3 weeks...after watchig this show I would agree that "some" things are harsher by todays standards, but they have alot of other things much easier.... That said...great show! I'm hooked! Thanks for the up!
"Don't eyeball me sunshine, or I'll rip 'em out and put 'em on my mantlepiece as a souvenir!" For a reality show there are some great lines in this, surely the corporal rehearsed that speech!
But it's meant to be the 1950's, homosexuality was illegal until 1967, then only over the age of 21. It went on of course, however it did provide fertile pickings for blackmail by criminals. A very good film made in 1960, 'Victim' explores this.
I don't think Sergeant Roberts was very fair in punishing that recruit, he said "I don't know if that water has been in there for ages do I?" technically he was asking him a question, and the recruit gave him an answer, I don't consider that answering back. But there should be more series of this, it is the best reality show by far.
Probably a rhetorical question. Basically in that environment he expects you to say 'yes-no-three-bags-full' and if he says 'it's not clean' then contradicting him even if he's wrong is considered answering back. If he says it's Wednesday, it's Wednesday, even if it's Friday. After boot camp, the punishment would be much worse - even giving a funny look to a superior officer or NCO can get you a court marshal.
@0099297 No, it is NOT harsh by today's standards. If he talked like that today in a Sgt's inspection, he'd be beasted 100x worse than carrying an empty bloody pin around the square at a pace I can walk faster than. Again though their only Civvies so they can't overdo it.
I met Wolfe six months ago and he was still carrying that bin
He’s a bin man now. Apparently he’s got a fetish for bins these days.
"GET THAT SHAGGING THING ABOVE YOUR HEAD!"
I agree, I'm in the Australian army reserves and my bootcamp was more or less exactly like this.
