geology hub just reported well over 200m for some fountains. AMAZING! Thank you SO MUCH for making this and providing the footage. You would NOT want to be anywhere near that fissure when it ripped open, escaping would be difficult.
I got lucky this morning. Caught the first notice on tablet. Their are a few good channels. Most are 3 days behind with computer generated voices, that keep repeating themselves throughout video. Then old pictures of volcanoes that are thousands of miles away. Ugh...
Opals, Volcanoes, cooking and wildlife. Nothing more to ever wish for. Sorry, I got blasted by bot for getting off track, but I did apologise for it. It's my brain doing its thing. Can't stay focused for long until reminded too. Sad, but true. 😒
I love Iceland. Ice and fire, spectacular waterfalls and bright green grass - what a beautiful land and what a great people live there! Miss Iceland every day.
This geologist from the U.S. appreciates the maps -- most other channels provide information that provides locations that only Iceland people would know.
Agreed! The maps are clear, and for this retired geologist, also show clearly the relationship of these eruptions to those of previous years and generations! Double thanks! 👍🤩
I am NOT a geologist but I am from the US, and I found your video VERY informative. The video of the eruption was NOT zoomed in much, thus showing the context of the eruption, and your maps are very clear - telling me where the eruption is compared to Grindavik and its level of threat. The "professional" news organizations just show a closeup of the lava fountain, which looks about the same as thousands of other lava fountains, and generic pictures of other things, like closed roads and emergency vehicles, but no maps. I guess they figure that, since we don't live there, we won't care. Then they wonder why they are going out of business.
Thanks so much for the update, and especially for "Let's look at the details!" So glad they have protective barriers already in place upslope from Grindavik - was watching live stream on another channel and it looked like it was headed directly towards the town, then started impounding against something and subsequently to be deflected away from the town. YOU showed us how and why this is happening. Thanks again! Take care, and stay safe!
Yeah, everything is fine and it's actually looking like there will be no damage to infrastructure at all so in a few hours, when it's over, it'll like nothing happened. Other than, of course, the humongous lava field that has now formed.
Wow! This was amazing to see and thank you do much for this outstanding footage! Goes to show everyone..that these things can really happen with hardly any forewarning. This is one of the biggest eruptions and can do quite a bit of damage considering the amount of lava. Thanks for this update, Hildarmenn!🌟
Ayyy, you're welcome Audrianna! This is definitely the biggest eruption of the 4 and it's crazy to think it has also reached the ocean in the south and the hit water pipe in the west.
Oh Hlidarmenn, was checking the Live cams just minutes before the eruption at the evening and everything was calm. And wake up to this! I wonder what the experts say now! The footage was quite beautiful, thank you for that. I hope that the Lave do not destroy anything significant. I enjoy your video so much. Stay safe. That is a pretty powerful eruption!
Ayy, Claudia. Definitely crazy how little notice we got from the eruption, just came out of nowhere. Definitely excited to see what our experts uncovere
@@Hliarmenn A few days before, there was bigger earthquake at Eldey, than I thought, here comes the magma. I am not sure about an eruption in the ocean. You know, the water is cold, it has weight, it’s dark. It is way better to follow the Atlantic ridge, maybe some ways open up only because of the plate movement and look, there are cracks, you can come through… Boom! 🌋🌋🌋
Thank you for sharing all of this with us and keeping us informed! I believe there will be more output because the fissure is longer and the spouts higher. Thanks again from Highland California USA
Thank you for such good reporting and giving us the details about the direction of the lava flow. My prayers are for Grindavik and for you all to stay safe. I love Iceland and in all my 38 visits I have managed to only meet awesome and kind Icelanders. I hope this eruption ends soon and that you can rebuild things fast. Be strong and safe. From Vancouver, Canada.
Really enjoy your updates, thank you so much! Very informative and we appreciate you keeping the world up to speed in the most calming way. Stay safe and thank you for sharing mother nature’s awe with us! ❤🌋😊
Iceland definitely has the most spectacular volcanic eruptions. Destructive, yes, but gorgeous display of watery lava fountains for 1 or 2 km for everyone to see.🎉 Thanks for sharing.
And it's still going even though it is reduced in volume. How they managed the flow with the berms is absolutely awesome. Saving Grindavik again is quite a feat. Looking forward to more images.
Makes you re-evaluate the concerns of those complaining about building near the surf:) Magnificent photography, the power of nature never ceases to amaze. I'll be curious to see what happens during the next eruption, especially given the upcoming eclipse, not to mention the impending magnetic pole inversion.
This the best description of the actual location of the new fissure relative to the previous ones, and of likely flow patterns. One of the other channels even reported that this was not a "big" eruption. I know, it's a race to be the first, but still.
Great video on what’s happening and I am glad they have managed to finish the lava barriers so Grindivek and the power plant are safe. Let’s just hope the lava doesn’t reach the hot water pipe again
Been to Iceland twice in 1987 and 1992. A very beautiful place with a very resilient people. It's one of the most geologically active places on earth. It gives even Japan a run for that distinction. Hope the Icelanders are okay.
Scary yet beautiful at the same time. Iceland certainly deserves the title of the *"Land of Ice and Fire".* 👍🇦🇺 Great footage - and thanks for the maps as well.
1000 cubic meters per second translates to 70,000 acre-feet per day. 5 square kilometers translates to 1235 acres. If it is an average of 10 feet in thickness, we have over 12,000 acre-feet so far. In about 2 hours. That is a lot of new Iceland!
Stunning videos. I was watching some of the live videos around 10 pm EST, and that lava was flowing fast. Thankfully those defense walls looked like they were doing their job around Grindavik.
This is a fantastic video, thank you. It was concise with stunning and relevant footage, clear explanation of what's happening now and what might happen next. Clear diagrams/illustrations gave me a good understanding of the situation, and I appreciated you showing that incredible start. Really helpful!
Lava is most likely less than 100m away from them now, 12 hours after the eruption started. Hopefully, if they go under lava now, the will survive as they've been beefed up after the previous eruption.
Yeah, it's been stable for more than 24 hours now which is something we haven't seen with the other 3 eruptions from the Svartsengi system. Exciting to see how long it'll last
Yeah, these days, an evacuation due to a volcanic eruption is a possible part of the experience 😂😬. It's been such a relief that evacuation gave gone really smoothly, took only 30min to evacuate 700 people.
This is definitely the best video of the early eruption phase. I began watching about 20 minutes after the eruption began, but viewers could only get a distant view. It was hard to tell how high the fountains were (they were _high!_ - 300 meters was one estimate). I'm glad you showed the likely path for the lava to pass east of Grindavík. I sure hope that the lava follows the script. Thanks for another fine video.
Ayyy, that's awesome to hear. Yeah, the lava fountains are definitely way over 100m, I've heard over 200m which mean the average height, over a 1km stretch of the fissure, was probably 100m😬🌋

Wow, that's just so crazy to think.
Yeah, definitely, it opened so violently 😬😂
Had to recheck his video - he states at least 275m in height! [4:05] in the video. Must have been awesome to see!
