I was in high school, early 80s, and I loved this guy's music, album covers, and periodic mention in the Village Voice. That's all the information I could get. 40 years later and I stumble upon this video, not having thought of this music in 30 years. It's surreal and magnificent to see and hear this. What a remarkable and hilarious artist.
Me too! Was introduced to Road Runner (his original) when I move to Boston, huge wake-up. And I started exploring. And this is one of his best I think. What a talent!
@@seangreen6456 My band opened for him many years ago and he was just a great guy, as far as we were concerned. He listened to our entire set and was affable and complimentary. Nicer than most of the local bands we played with.

I've almost-known Jonathan since the '70s. I knew HIPPIE JOHNNIE! I've only seen Jonathan live three times, twice in NYC and once in Paris and each show was totally different. This is one artist I will drag myself out to see no matter what. If I have a pulse, I will pay and be there. When he was doing acoustic guitar in the Spanish style, it was superb but he was always good -- and apparently not very easy to deal with.
@@fcmhockeyvideos We've seen kids playing adult guitars and they don't look that small. Either Jonathan is a dwarf or this is a huge ass guitar. And since we've seen Jonathan with telecasters and we looks normal next to them, this is a big ass guitar
I've seen him perform live at least five times. Usually in really small venues. He's truly gifted. Great humor and connects with the randy audience. Always leaves me wanting more.
When my aunt died i heired one third of her LPs and CDs, among them were two by Jonathan Richman. I hadn't heard about him or The Modern Lovers before, but I'm so exceited about this music now. She has "introduced" me to so much good music, thanks auntie
One of the best performers i never had the pleasure to watch live, brilliant, funny, talented. Jonathan Richman, one of the last great ones for sure. Music at its best. 10\10
and the way of talking--sort of like nothing he's saying really matters, just a bunch of words to get to the point. in the video of him doing "Abdul and Cleopatra" it's freakishly similar to mac (well, vice versa).
Watching this & I just can't stop smiling. Richman is adorable. And it's a 'proper' song that is also really funny, which I think is harder to pull off than comedy songs, pastiches, etc.
Glad this show is introducing people to great music. Check out his band the modern lovers too! Remember to always keep digging further, there’s always something new and exciting to find in music
Jonathan Richman is ONE COOL DUDE!!! The Vibes, the dance moves, that sense of humor,....thumbs up to ya champipple and thankin' my buddy CuteCatFaith for the COOL Share!! =)
Oh Jonathan please come to Stockholm again, your concert was such a joy! Many years ago now...but maybe I just have to go to where you are, as long as there is life there is hope and freedom of movement, just like those hips, strings and lips!
My wife & I saw him (@ the lulu lounge in Toronto) and we got to talk to him afterwards. he even volunteered (his idea) to come to her kindergarten classroom (she is a teacher) the next day and play some songs for the kids. turns out there was an assembly in the morning, so the schedule didn't work out, but really... how cool is that.
If you could bottle that little look of comic incredulity he gives at 00.39 seconds, you'd have a priceless object on your hands. Many thanks for this.
Just watched the 4th episode of the 4th season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (available in Germany from 2.25.2022) and was looking for the song at the end & here it is with video! So charming... 💜
(What looks like Toms) & skinny jeans in 92?! Looks like Richmond wasn't just ahead of his time with his music. God if only the modern lovers had made at least one more record
I only just now discovered Johnathon Richman from a Space Goast Coast to Coast episode after watching 3 of his performances so far I already feel like he's my spirit animal
It was something crazy like $15 a ticket when he played the 9:30 club in DC and it ranks as the best act I have ever seen. Do yourself a favor and see him if he is in your town.
I saw Jonathan live and closeup at the Minneapolis record store Let It Be (now closed). There were only about 20 people to see him and he was such a great performer! Imagine sitting six inches from this guy as he sings and dances around!
Love Jonathan Richmond seen him at least 50 times over the years, a Boston guy, so I was lucky, 123456- Roadrunner,Roadrunner, going faster miles an hour.
What we did not get at the height of the punk movement was that The Modern Lovers and Jonathan were fun and goofy and.....hum, that describes the Austin version of punk nicely. He still plays here.
Look at how free he is up there. He's not just singing a song, this is an absolute performance of the highest measure
Oh I don't know about that.
It's just jojo doin his thing

He seems a great guy...... As well as a great talent

I love how he's one of the fathers of punk rock.
I don't know about that either. He's like the opposite of punk rock, actually.

one word: Roadrunner.
Definitely see the connection between Jonathan and Talking Heads, who inherited the Modern Lovers' keyboardist. Both awesome.
