  • Two classic Caterpillar crawler tractors are given an outing after this years harvest. Some rough headlands were being ploughed so they could be levelled, after the harvest of tulip bulbs. This was merely an exercise for the crawlers, which had been standing still for over a year. They are owned by Dutch Caterpillar-enthusiast H. Smit. Both tractors were sold new in the Netherlands and have an interesting history.
The first crawler is a 1935 Caterpillar RD-6 2H. This tractor is fitted with a Cat D6600 3 cylinder engine producing 45 hp and a very distinctive exhaust note. Max torque is reached at an incredibly low 600 rpm, which isn’t strange if you consider this block holds nearly 11L! Behind it is a 4 furrow Ransomes Proconsul TS 3E 14” conventional plough, which it pulls with great ease. Back in the days it would have been pulling 2 similar ploughs.
This RD-6 was purchased new by the Dutch government board “Directie Wieringermeer” whose task it was to reclaim farm land from the sea (the Wieringermeer). Multiple Caterpillar crawlers were bought for nearly all farming tasks on the fragile and often pudding-like sea bed. The steel tracks were fitted with wooden blocks to aid flotation on this slippery surface.
The second crawler in action is a Caterpillar D6 9U new in 1956. This was purchased by the Koninklijke Maatschap de Wilhelminapolder (KMWP). One of the largest privately owned arable farms in the country. It is pulling a 1970s Dowdeswell DP 4 six furrow plough, painted in Ransomes blue and sold under the Ransomes name in Holland. This tractor features a 6 cylinder D318 8,5L engine of 66 horsepower. This model is one of the most popular Caterpillar crawlers of all time, having sold over 28.000 units.

Both are fine machines, and I love the sound of the RD6. I do, however, regret to point out a small correction. While it is true that 850 rpm is the {governed} maximum speed of the RD6's engine, maximum torque is achieved at only 600 rpm. Squatch253 did an excellent TH-cam on that very topic. As Squatch says, when you hear that engine really start cacklin', you know it's really working. Watch that vid, it's worth your time.

Thank you for correcting me NJC. I don't pretend to be a Caterpillar expert. This was information that I sourced but it turns out that wasn't 100%. I have corrected the text.

@@Agrifotodotnl I want to make sure you know that I was not in any way shooting arrows. Squatch253 turned me into an RD6 enthusiast, and I just wanted to pass on a bit of what he taught me. He is a real Caterpillar expert, and I hope you can find a few moments to check out his channel.

Very interesting! I recently acquired a D6-9U with the forestry package and i'm loving it. Are those wooden blocks bolted to the RD-6?

They are indeed. This was an original feature when it was now to increase the flotation capacity on soft soils.

      They are road blocks
So you won’t destroy paved surfaces
