This strat was made many years ago but found it too inefficient due to how you need to bring Silverfish from the Spawner to the area to mine. 1.21 changed everything as you only need a Stone block for 3 Spash Potions of Infestation and a mob that has high regen that does not get killed from campfires or poison.
Yeah and how slow spawners are to spawn in general. I tested a "big" mining setup earlier tonight and got over 8000 silverfish into a 25 chunk area in about 6 minutes. lol Can't do that in 1.5
I can only see 4 main problems with this: 1. Unwanted hunks of non-stone blocks - some are ores, which is intended of course, but the granite/diorite/andesite chunks, water/lava caves or pools, dripstone caves, and dirt chunks aren't good for mining for obvious reasons. 2. Occasional missed blocks - Sometimes the silverfish don't get to everything and that's suboptimal, although this isn't a HUGE problem 3. Needing that many potions - you spilled at least 3 poison/regen potion combos - I saw in a different place in the comments that it was already solved using a snow golem and singular silverfish, though. 4. Getting rid of them. This is honestly pretty easy.
Just to clarify - I def didn't need that many potions, I was just in creative so why not "make sure" you get everything, right? I have made this exact setup work almost exactly the same with 1 of each of the three potions, though. So at least that drawback isn't as much of one as I made it look like. The *main* problem I have with it isn't leaving behind the unwanted blocks. I could sometimes use a granite/diorite/andesite farm anyways. The main isssue for me is that it's *only* vertical. Making this do much horizontally is a bit more pain.
@@RadicalExtras I wish there was a way to induce DOT on a minecart/boat with an Allay. You could theoretically dig out a 2-block-tall tunnel, run a minecart with an allay in it, and somehow damage it as it goes back and forth. I think allay are a little too small to be suffocated by normal means but if you get it to work you could just run a chain of them on a loop/back and forth to dig out a tunnel.
The sculk catalyst expansion to this method I've been toying with can come in handy for most of those issues. You can damage the silverfish with magma blocks (wither roses could also work but require a Wither first; magma blocks are much easier to acquire) and when they die a sculk catalyst can spread sculk to infestation-proof blocks (except ores and similar blocks.) Use a hoe with Efficiency (1-5 depending on what you've got available) and Mending (no Silk Touch) and plow through the sculk it generates. This reduces the need for tons of poison/regen potions and eliminates unwanted blocks with a high level of efficiency. This also enables this method to work in all dimensions.

I've been playing Minecraft since only like 2 months after silverfish were added, and I only today learned they can't break andesite, diorite, or granite.
Yeah i love how portable it is. No looking for a stronghold, transporting mobs 100s or 1000s of blocks, etc. Just a couple allay across the nether roof or something, pop a portal and boom, silverfish mining.
I've found that you can expand this easily to make it work on infestation-proof blocks (except ores.) Build a containment cage (glass, trapdoors, etc.) around the allay (or armadillo) spawning mechanism (e.g. campfire cage) and place magma blocks or campfires at the bottom. Place a sculk catalyst nearby and watch it spread. More allays (or armadillos) means more mobs slain and thus quicker spread. Use a hoe (without silk touch) to harvest the sculk quickly and let it spread further as you clear it out. Mending makes sure that hoe stays repaired. This also works in the nether which opens up basalt delta mining for ancient debris.
This would actually be a good idea. It makes sense since silverfish can be found inside blocks, so this is how they enter blocks + when you hurt the silverfish, it made sense they went down since that is the only way. Everything about it seems realistic by Minecraft standards.
I dunno about that. You could do it in a larger area...like 2x2 chunks. I think it would still be pretty worthwhile even at that scale. And then, if you do it just four times, that's 16 chunks mined out in a fraction of the time, without nearly as much garbage in chests or waiting around to despawn. I think overall, it's probably worth it. If you can set it up quickly enough, it easily keeps pace with even a top-tier pick. And again, you're not collecting all the crap along with it.
Just to follow up on this I tried a 12 chunk version with 9000 silverfish. It went *slightly* over 50 mspt so a bit laggy even on my PC but it decimated 12 chunks in about 10 minutes (after the 3 minute setup)
It’s possibly that they’re being triggered to hatch from their blocks by the fall damage of the silverfish spawning from the allays and falling, if so then there wouldn’t really be any need for poison or regen unless to speed it up since they’ll eventually get triggered anyways and the effects won’t last anyways either

Infestation potion on allays that are standing on a campfire. The allays take a tick of damage but can outheal it. So they keep spawning everytime they take that little damage.
Solution for the contamination problem: cover an X×Z area from bedrock all the way up to the silverfish entrance level with walls of a different block that silverfish can't access. Then release the silverfish and let them destroy everything within the covered chunks. Ta-da 🎉 All you need now is mining a few tens of thousands of blocks and you get a few hundreds of thousands cleaned up for you. Go far away from the chunk so the silverfish despawn or use instant damage potions for the cleanup before mining. Ez
So... I have some questions about silver fish... I thought they only spawned in the stronghold, then I got attacked by a group repeatly while mining not far below the surface. I had spawned on a island and made the island my base of operations; hint lots of mining. I found one while mining, though weird, then didn't think anything of it, til like the 7th, then put a sign up and abandoned it. What are their spawn crteria? What exactly happened? Is there anything I could do about it?
I got the same a long time ago, playing on ps3. I read somewhere that it was normal and i think it was due to being close to a mountains. Not sure tho, you should check it on minecraft wiki :)
The allays are taking damage from a campfire. I threw the infestation potion at the allays so every tick of damage they have a chance to spawn a silverfish. The allays can outheal the campfire so they are never in danger of dying and just keep spawning silverfish for the entire potion's lifetime. Then I hit the silverfish with regen then poison - that makes them infest blocks and summon others from infested blocks = the mining I did.
How long do the silverfish survive without the healing potion? would it be possible to stagger the healing potion time with the poison time to make them die at the last poison tick?
Probably - I haven't had time to get too scientific with this yet but I want to do a lot more testing. I have a few things it can already be used specifically for (strongholds, deepslate coal and deepslate emerald hunting) and have a few other ideas in mind to test. Also it's not that the silverfish die, it's that they stop taking damage at half a heart. I want them to continously tick so I need the poison to KEEP acting, that's why we splash the regen.
The new infesting potion - this was all done in a "legit" way - I was in creative but everything I did can be easily done in survival in 1.21. Whether it's practical, we'll see ... I have a few ways I can already use the concepts to do things. #1 being it's a mobile XP farm. Regund has a great tutorial for it. You can also dig the area for a tunnel bore quickly with this, as well as use it in scav hunts and a few other niche uses.
Yes and yes. There are 3 potions. 1) Infestation on the allays to make them create silverfish, 2) regen on the silverfish so they can take a LOT of damage and then 3) poison to start that damage. :)
Just a quick note, the nasa pc wasn't enough. lol I spawned enough to destroy 25 chunks and it was over 9000 silverfish and my MSPT was near 200. It was running 1 second for every 4 oops haha
Haha I'll be honest, I thought your video was incredible. I wanted to test a few things as I'm building regund's XP version and I want to know the limits ... this is CRACKED. I have some usable ideas already that may make it to my hc world.
I put allays just above the campfire, then lit it so they took damage. Allays can outheal it but when a mob takes damage and gets hit with a new 1.21 splash infestation potion there's a chance they'll spawn a silverfish. If you dupe the allays in place, you can go from 1 to 2, 2 to 4 and 4 to 8 quickly ... light the fire, throw the potion and boom, this happens. lol Then you splash the silverfish with poison so THEY take damage and splash them with regen so they don't ever stop taking poison damage.
New fastest way to mine a chunk?? Probably not. Though it looks faster than tnt duping in small sections if you dont take into account the spawning time but this looks like a very useful technique
@@Evan-Delauney-Meyer I mean. The original video I saw of this before this one was released strictly mentioned the goal was to have the ores be visible. And the author of this video said in a comment below that having only the ores be visible allows for easy fortune enchanting to be focused only on the ores.
To me, both are fun things right? I don't know the full extent of this yet and will keep testing and trying ideas but it's a WILD way to get 40+ blocks underground super fast. I love that it leaves the ores but I don't know if that's a "goal" - it's definitely a benefit imo. But I did make a reply on another comment talking about the 1 chunk mined WR. That's mostly a joke because they find chunks that have like 50 blocks or less left to mine where you spawn next to a pyramid for tnt and it's just a crazy time. lol
I mean a video from 10 years ago could be demonstrating "silverfish mining" but it wasn't demonstrating *this* as the potion that makes it work came out in 1.21 about 4 weeks ago. lol Niesn's vid is now linked in the description - good idea. I didn't expect this to get more than 100 views lol

@@RadicalExtras Um but alomost every single reviled stone blocks will be infested and they won't despawn like if you hit one of them they all will appear like ninjas what about that
The leftover silverfish? Bucket of lava, drop a TNT down there, throw a harming potion ... depends what you wanna do. I think you should be able to also just leave and come back and despawn them by going more than 128 away.
I justbhad a thought, can silverfiah dodge a /kill by hiding in a block? That would be neat if one just juked a player using commands and killed them like that.
as far as i know, once a silverfish hides into a block, the silverfish ceases to exist and in its place there is a new block. blocks cannot be slain with /kill
When a silver is hiding in a block, the silverfish deletes itself, but the block becomes infested. Breaking an infested block literally spawns a silverfish out of thin air. You can't delete something that's already deleted
It’s like mining with a nuke, it’s fast but now everything is contaminated
lol yep gotta mine the ores then get those leftover blocks with some tnt or great care.
If you break infested blocks with silk touch you'll be fine

Infestation potion on allays that are standing on a campfire. The allays take a tick of damage but can outheal it. So they keep spawning everytime they take that little damage.
Solution for the contamination problem: cover an X×Z area from bedrock all the way up to the silverfish entrance level with walls of a different block that silverfish can't access. Then release the silverfish and let them destroy everything within the covered chunks. Ta-da 🎉
All you need now is mining a few tens of thousands of blocks and you get a few hundreds of thousands cleaned up for you. Go far away from the chunk so the silverfish despawn or use instant damage potions for the cleanup before mining. Ez
This is just an idea btw, please test it in creative mode before trying it
Calling it a proof of concept is gold
Wait this is actually so cool
Could you make a video of this with particles disabled?
Not a horrible idea lol I have them on "minimal" but I don't think ReplayMod picked up on that.
Not sure tho, you should check it on minecraft wiki :)
how do the silverfish spawn
The allays are taking damage from a campfire. I threw the infestation potion at the allays so every tick of damage they have a chance to spawn a silverfish. The allays can outheal the campfire so they are never in danger of dying and just keep spawning silverfish for the entire potion's lifetime. Then I hit the silverfish with regen then poison - that makes them infest blocks and summon others from infested blocks = the mining I did.
I tried in survival and almost died 😂
lol "almost" is good though.
Wait this is genius
Only problem is how do you clean them quickly
Lava flood?
pack of wolves? :D lava flood, instant damage potions, thorns 3 and a gapple ... there would def be ways.
Mojang adding 2 extremely OP items in the same update:
imagine the noise 💀
Oh it's horrible. lol Imagine not running ESM mod in 2024 though.
Very good video, I was wondering how effective silverfish mining was
It's a fun concept to explore, that's for sure! I went full colon capital O when I saw it the first time. lol
Imagine someone did this to your base on a faction server lol.
Poison can’t kill
Is this practically useful though? How do you spawn that many silverfish in an area?
The new infesting potion - this was all done in a "legit" way - I was in creative but everything I did can be easily done in survival in 1.21. Whether it's practical, we'll see ... I have a few ways I can already use the concepts to do things. #1 being it's a mobile XP farm. Regund has a great tutorial for it. You can also dig the area for a tunnel bore quickly with this, as well as use it in scav hunts and a few other niche uses.
guess i cant build bases with stone anymore
Looks pretty effective, but itd probably be annoying to have it run into any non-stone stuff like water, gravel, dirt and lava.
Yeah it has its issues ... there are a few nice uses but it's a very ... new but limited tech. lol
you can prolly mix it with a piston block+snow xray thingi.
It’s still a nearly free quarry all the way down to wherever the lava or gravel starts
Dirt clumps are too small to really stop this reaction
Imagine the lag
I have no such weaknesses.

Does this work on deep slate and is that poison potion?
Yes and yes. There are 3 potions. 1) Infestation on the allays to make them create silverfish, 2) regen on the silverfish so they can take a LOT of damage and then 3) poison to start that damage. :)

lol
flawless idea, now all i need is a nasa pc to build my perimeter 🤣
haha I have the nasa PC, I just need to figure out how I want to use this now. haha
Just a quick note, the nasa pc wasn't enough. lol I spawned enough to destroy 25 chunks and it was over 9000 silverfish and my MSPT was near 200. It was running 1 second for every 4 oops haha
What do you mean? Obviously I invented silverfish mining (just in case, I'm kidding)
Haha I'll be honest, I thought your video was incredible. I wanted to test a few things as I'm building regund's XP version and I want to know the limits ... this is CRACKED. I have some usable ideas already that may make it to my hc world.
I didn't know you could spawn silverfishes by putting wood on a campfire, is this a new thing?
I put allays just above the campfire, then lit it so they took damage. Allays can outheal it but when a mob takes damage and gets hit with a new 1.21 splash infestation potion there's a chance they'll spawn a silverfish. If you dupe the allays in place, you can go from 1 to 2, 2 to 4 and 4 to 8 quickly ... light the fire, throw the potion and boom, this happens. lol Then you splash the silverfish with poison so THEY take damage and splash them with regen so they don't ever stop taking poison damage.
Would be really useful if it worked with deepslate
It does!
New fastest way to mine a chunk??
Probably not.
Though it looks faster than tnt duping in small sections if you dont take into account the spawning time but this looks like a very useful technique
The goal is to only have ores visible! Not exactly made for chunk destruction
@@the_bigfriv9401 the goal can be debated. A benefit is that ores are left behind
That's mostly a joke because they find chunks that have like 50 blocks or less left to mine where you spawn next to a pyramid for tnt and it's just a crazy time. lol
@@RadicalExtras true, for the random seed speed runs this will be irrelevant. But it could be a cool strategy in a single player world
Could you link neisn? I found a video from over 10 years ago demonstrating this, and im wondering who found this first.
I mean a video from 10 years ago could be demonstrating "silverfish mining" but it wasn't demonstrating *this* as the potion that makes it work came out in 1.21 about 4 weeks ago. lol Niesn's vid is now linked in the description - good idea. I didn't expect this to get more than 100 views lol
this is INSANE
it is!
How deep did it end up going before the potions ran out?
about 45 layers down on average. some went to almost 60 layers down.
@@RadicalExtraswow! That’s way more than I expected
And to continue, I just need to move the allay station down to the bottom again with dirt walls, right?
Probably would work yeah ... I'm still working out how I play to "deploy" this kind of thing but it's a bit nuts! :D
Genius!
This is so cool!!!
Wait, but how I gonna cleanse all the place? Those silverfish... they are EVERYWHERE!
The easy way - go over 128 blocks away :D
@@RadicalExtras Just leave dozens of chunks for the nature
@@RadicalExtras Um but alomost every single reviled stone blocks will be infested and they won't despawn like if you hit one of them they all will appear like ninjas what about that
Silk touch the remaining stone I guess? Or hit one in a safe spot and let the rest come out then despawn them again.
I guess you could trap the place with lava, then bait them out
Not 100% effective, but it should get most of them
I think I’ll stick with X-ray 😊
What do we do about the fish?
The leftover silverfish? Bucket of lava, drop a TNT down there, throw a harming potion ... depends what you wanna do. I think you should be able to also just leave and come back and despawn them by going more than 128 away.
I justbhad a thought, can silverfiah dodge a /kill by hiding in a block? That would be neat if one just juked a player using commands and killed them like that.
Not actually sure but imagine. lol
as far as i know, once a silverfish hides into a block, the silverfish ceases to exist and in its place there is a new block. blocks cannot be slain with /kill
When a silver is hiding in a block, the silverfish deletes itself, but the block becomes infested. Breaking an infested block literally spawns a silverfish out of thin air. You can't delete something that's already deleted
i think these potions need a nerf
