Aretha was at the grammys to perform a new version of Respect that was featured in the Blues Brothers 2000 film. she had finished her new version of respect (with a little hiccup) and was back in her dressing room basically done for the evening. Luciano is there to receive an award and to perform Nessun Dorma but just before a commercial break he tells the producers that his doctors advised him that he cannot perform. Remember the grammys were live, the orchestra and choir was already set and ready to go as they were next up after the commercial break and were tuned to Luciano's key. with 7 minutes to go, one of the producers remembered that Aretha did this song 2 days prior at the music cares benefit (in her own key) and ran to her dressing room to see if she would do it. she did not hesitate and said yes. She literally had no time to rehearse and they did not have time to change the key to suit her and so she had to sing it in Luciano's key. did she sing a perfect opera, no, however she brought her own soul to this song and captured the evening. She was the highlight of the night and this is noted as one of the greatest moments in Grammy History. Luciano was watching from his hotel room and invited her to come sing with him in italy. (she had a fear of flying and never went) but they formed a friendship after this. that year was a huge comback for her of sorts (did she ever really go away). but there was a great renewed interest in her career and she went on many talk shows and performed her version many time. her new album that same year (A Rose is Still A Rose) went gold and the title song went top 5 R&B and went to number 26 on the billboard hot 100.And then there was also the DIVA's Live. Anyway can you tell i'm a fan. Aretha franklin is the greatest singer to have ever walked this earth.
From knowing Queen Aretha for over 45 yrs All these other females Patti Gladys Celin e ,Whitney all know that they sit on the soldiers of Queen Aretha she has done this music since age 18 , I'm just so sadden as to how our people of this generation are so ignorant as to her greatness , everything musically Aretha does she has always been those in awe of and they should be,she has done the Mary J Blige stuff before Mary was born as well as hip hop in the 60 s and has always had 2 albums a year and 3 singles on the regular like King James Brown Gospel jazz blues country western pop Opera hip hop or rap and foreign languages and a musical songwriter , live performer she takes you there like Jazz Queen the late Ella Fitzgerald at age 76 showed hip hop artists how it's done on the Grammy awards and Tupac Biggie,Mary J Celine Natalie Cole all stood up and recognized Jazz Queen Ella before she left this world , We must observe and keep our legacy going Soulfulness and Black but with Dignity and class like these Legends gone on before us Amen
Your reaction was the same as mine. I was so quiet through it all because my emotions had taken a front seat and all I could do is live in the moment...I get goosebumps no matter how many times I watch it
Me too... anytime I want to feel a little better I play Franklin's "Nessun Dorma"... Listening to Aretha's performance here is like drinking a very expensive fine wine!.. I never get tired of it... It was absolutely beautiful!
I still get a tear when I see and hear this and I remember when it originally aired in 1998... I`ve always felt Aretha is the greatest singer that ever lived .... Can you react to Aretha singing `Lean on Me` and `Until You Say You Love Me`.
until you say you love me is one of my favorite songs of her's, from the Who Zoomin Who Album,. and the song Search On, form the Love all The Hurt Alway Album. it is FIRE !!!
Aretha is the most versatile singer ever!!! Aunt Re was done this night but they asked her at the last minute to do this. She listened to the tape in just 5 minutes and got it. She had no choice but to sing this in Pavoratti’s key. She usually sang this in a higher key but we know she has range for days. I don’t know any female singers that have a range like hers (other than Sarah Vaughan and a few opera singers) and that are as versatile as her. The woman sang everything from that good ole gospel music to opera to rock to blues to jazz and scatt to country to R&B ranging over 60 years!
Well said... IMO Miss Franklin enjoyed her finest moment of her career that night, in a career filled with great moments!... Her performance and the circumstances surrounding it were equally amazing!
Please react to her playing the piano and singing “Oh Holy Night” on the view 🔥🔥🔥! Her range is very prevalent in that performance as well plus she did some stupid good runs 🙌🏾
I remember watching the Grammys that night. It was one of the most unorganized Grammys I've ever seen. Then Aretha came on and knocked it out of the ballpark and saved the day.
I was watching the Grammys that night live and when Sting announced that Aretha Franklin would be stepping in (literally at a moment’s notice) for Luciano Pavarotti and sing Nessum Dorma; l said that’s opera. I didn’t think she could pull it off. Lo and behold, she NAILED IT! She took us the church. No, she’s no Kathleen Battle; but she sung it ‘Aretha style’. Later it was said that Pavarotti had cried in his home in Italy - watching Aretha sing. And to have his children there to witness it in person; was priceless!!! WELL DONE ARETHA! Well done indeed!!!!!
aretha is enormous. opera is another sport. it takes talent, four centuries tradition and fourty years training. it's like ballet. no compromise. no microphone. power and complete perfection.
Hol'up, I need all of them background singers names! They are all males and their ranges are so different that they sound like 6 people. Handsomely amazing!
Wow. Every commentator so far is deaf, I believe. She is a fantastic singer in her genre, but opera is not for her and I mean this respectfully. It was pleasant, but not operatic.
Regardless what one thinks She pulled it off Grandly and Soulfully if you aren't Soulful then you wouldn't understand ( that we sing the way we feel from within and outside of Mr Pavorrotti a Grand Male Opera Legend he sings from his Soul , Aretha The Queen She sang from her Soul I'm sure no other female would dare challenge her that night , Bravo Queen Aretha with your God given Soulful gifts mankind may not understand it but if your human you feel it . Amen
She didn't really sing it in true opera fashion as she knows she's not classically trained. But she did sing it true to Aretha's style--a lil Gospel and a whole lotta Soul.
That look on your face I had it to. In 1998 I seen it that night I couldn't believe Aretha Franklin sang Opera we lost someone special. True Diva.

Great reaction to and excellent performance.
The only Queen that has pass this way. There will never be another Aretha Franklin.
I've watched Aretha sing this piece so many times for the day, but watching your facial expressions as she sang really cracked me up.
Aretha was the VOICE! She simply was!
Very nice...technically it wasn't opera, because she had a very distinct gospel sound to it...her voice was very full and angelic...but, well done...
I remember watching the Grammys that night. It was one of the most unorganized Grammys I've ever seen.
Then Aretha came on and knocked it out of the ballpark and saved the day.
Stunningly amazing....I'm absolutely mesmerized.
The Queen, what can I say. I love her and her soulful voice. She was amazing....

Did you see Celine face.
Please react to Aretha Franklin singing "Climb Every Mountain," not "Climbing Higher Mountains," which is another great song of hers.
You got it. Will add that to my playlist now. Thank you!
@@awordfrompresidentpat1985 Thank you.
