@@TheVirtualCelebrity Elena of Avalor is a Spin-off series of Sofia the first. The two shows are interlinked. Here is the order that it should be watched in:
Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess.
Sofia the first season 1 episode 1-24 or 25 ( there is a two part episode called the Floating palace which is crucial to get the full version of the event) Season 2 fully season 3 all the way upto Dads and Daughters' day
this is where you Elena of avalor becomes important. so watch elena of avalor season 1 episode 1-10 then watch the special episode called the Secret of Elena of Avalor. then go back to sofia and finish season 3 and all of season 4 ending with the episode called Forever Royal.
then you can return to elena of avalor and watch the rest of season 1 and all of season 2&3 ending with Coronation day. a 5 episode finale and there is a surprise at the end.

I mean the current Barbie shows/movies are leaning back into the mythical genre.

    • @BlythePennyBicycle21

@@laugh-a-gramstudios4601 In regards to Barbie movies, this is mainly due to the movies and shows from 2017 onward being set in the same continuity as Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures, a show that skews pretty young. It's kind of a thing with projects that give great prominence to Barbie's younger sisters where the target audience is younger. I mean, in Dreamhouse Adventures itself, they appear in 48 of the show's 52 episodes. It says something when even most of the high school episodes usually have some scenes or subplots with them. Adding to this is how Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures showrunner Ann Austen worked on most of the movies that came out after that show ended, usually being a producer (the only Barbie movie writer to get that kind of credit).

@@abbythings I haven't watched much Barbie material from the 2000s and early 2010s, but I'd say the change in direction for Barbie is mainly due to current Mattel executives trying to follow on the DNA of Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures, a generally younger skewing and less hyper feminine show, which came out in 2018, though proceeded by the pilot movie Barbie: Dolphin Magic. After that show ended in 2020, all the Barbie movies and shows take place in the continuity, even the more magical projects like Barbie: Mermaid Power and Barbie: A Touch Of Magic, and do try to follow what that show did.

If any of you are on the hunt for a girly girl show that never runs out of steam, may I suggest Pretty Cure to ya'll. It's a magical girl show that started in 2004 made by the same studio who made Sailor Moon and unlike most of their contemporaries at the time, the heroines beat the crap out of their enemies with thier bare fists. It gets renewed every year with a new season and a new cast of characters since this show still makes a stonck load of money in Japan. The best seasons are considered to be "HeartChatch" and "Go Princes" but every season has its merits and its fans so you can start watching the show from whichever season you like (exept for Max Heart and Yes Go Go those a re sequel seasons).

    • @amandaslough125
      @amandaslough125 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +22

A few things to note. Same studio that made Sailor Moon Crystal, not the OG one. And it's essentially the magical girl version of Power Rangers (new cast of characters nearly each season). And single handedly leads the charge of girly shows over in Japan.

I want to bring up that the Disney Princesses have a tendency to be criticized and bullied for being "passive damsels in distress who just wait to be rescued". When I was growing up in the 2000s, I grew up with badass boy stuff like Hot Wheels, Transformers, superheroes, ect. and I grew up staying away from girly stuff (eventhough I watch My Life as a Teenage Robot in secret) and I also grew up with this infamous belief that "all princess characters are dumb girly damsels in distress" including the Disney Princesses (who were marketed as shallow damsels and romantics in the 2000s). But, in reality, the only Disney Princesses who were "damsels in distress" were not all of the Disney Princesses. It was really the first 3 classic Disney Princesses, Snow White, Cinderella, and Princess Aurora/Sleeping Beauty because they were passive in their own stories with little to do in the plot other than wait to be rescued. But, it wasn't until the Disney Renesance (1989-1999) came in when the Disney Princesses were transformed from damsels in distress into strong heroines with active roles in their stories.
Ariel saves Flounder from a shark, inadverty kills Ursula's eels in the climax, and saves Prince Eric more than once.
Belle cleverly rejects Gaston, saves her father and the beast more than once, and ultimately breaks the spell in the end.
Jasmine.....ummm....she distracts Jafar in the climax, uses Raja to scare away the jerky princes she was forced to marry, and stands her ground fighting for her independence? (Sorry, Jasmine is a smart and fun solid character. But, she didn't do alot in Aladdin. But, she was able to kick more butt in the tv series)
Pocahantas stops a war and saves John Smith
Mulan goes to war and ultimately saves China.
    Tiana defeats Dr Facilier.
Rapunzel beats up goons with a frying pan and her hair and saves Flynn Ryder multiple times.
Merida is a badass with a bow an arrow and a sword and breaks the curse in the end.
Anna and Elsa do their part to save each other and the kingdom of Arendele.
Moana restores the heart of TaFiti and saves the world in the end.
Rya is a badass action heroine (enough said).
Am I missing something? Am I wrong or am I right?

I think Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora are misunderstood.
Snow White made the best of a bad situation. She was fourteen, yet she still managed to remain grateful and kind. She worked hard. Yes, she was cursed and had to be rescued from the curse, but it's okay to let other people help you. You can't always save yourself by yourself. You usually don't. Almost everyone has friends and family they rely on.
Cinderella was in a bad situation as well, but it's not like she could leave. She would be homeless if she did. She still dreamed, remained grateful and kind, and worked hard. She chose to go to the ball because she wanted to go and have a good time. The prince and her happened to meet, fall in love, and marry. He did rescue her from a bad situation, but she also rescued herself by choosing to remain strong despite the circumstances. If she gave up, she would've never gained a better life.
How many people do you know that could still remain kind, grateful, and resilient even when all odds are against them?
It's been way too long since I've seen Sleeping Beauty, so I can't say much about Aurora, but I know there's more than just being cursed and rescued.
But my point is, they're more than just damsels in distress. They're reflections of real life and they're hope for people in those same situations. The hope that they will be able to endure and to one day escape. They are inspirations.

At least with the Winx reboot they're actually going back to the tone of the first four seasons.
Slightly more serious plots, Bloom actually drawing again and being weirded out by the fact she has magic before she meets Stella despite her interests in it...and we're actually going to see more than just Mitzi making her life on Earth something awful...and they're doing something they should have done in the first place...having Aisha present from day one....maybe Musa and Aisha can help Bloom with feeling like the new kid this time around instead of Stella demanding everything gets rushed.

(Here I'm thinking of Musa, Aisha, Tecna and maybe Roxy) Personally I also think it was handled way better then shows of today in that regard. Because neither group was unlikeable even tho all of the girls in the club had realistic flaws in early seasons.

People often forget 'Raya" exists because the message and generalization of SEA divided people, it came out during earlier COVID so box office wasn't good, and it wasn't a musical like it SHOULD HAVE BEEN.
(I'm enraged that the team felt like singing would've taken away from the serious tone when "Mulan," "Pocahontas," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," and Dreamworks' "The Prince of Egypt" did it so well; it's like how the director of the live-action "Mulan" said that she couldn't see how music fit into a story about a girl going to war, but if she did, she would've included it. In addition, dividing cartoons by gender is strange, because many problems are universal, and by dividing them into this genre, we separated from each other instead of uniting, boys have the right to know about girls' problems, and girls have the right to know about boys' problems
+ This division made no sense because gender is a spectrum and by dividing both productions it made many children feel ashamed of watching what they liked because it was of the opposite gender and other children were cruel
We should rather strive for balance than gender division, because considering the growing misogyny and sexism, it is less and less profitable to separate them
When gender-specific species die out and we finally get something that talks about everyone's problems, not just specific groups, it will be the best, because every girl is different, not the same, because it's human, people under the umbrella of trans and non-binary also exist, and they were omitted from the national team for years (And dividing cartoons by gender didn't help)

Anyway, I'm not surprised that in more recent times the villains were perfect girls, because they teased me too, so it makes sense, the myth was that tomboys and overweight girls were teased, when in reality it's the other way around, they're teased :/
And it was quite racist, if you think about it, many non-white girls were drawn as white ones, in short, the same face and anatomy, which didn't really help in the fight against racism and misogyny towards black women
Productions about magical girls were mainly based on characters with the same appearance, i.e. cis straight white girls, and the fact that they were often responsible for a guy caused sus, because many underage characters had anatomy that was quite inappropriate for their age (Today, such a case of miracolous , I remind you, Chloe is a child, same for Marinette, what this show did can be considered disturbing)

As a, closed, trans woman i allways loved girly girl shows they were my favorite and i kinda miss them, i'm happy for the "badass" woman shows and i think society needs both! Little girls needs to see that begin girly is ok, liking femminine stuff is ok! And is also okay linking more mascoline stuff! We need both, a badass warrior that likes shopping or a pixie magical girl that can be brave with a sparkle wand in hand!

I think thats part of the reason i love main characters like Luz and Adora(even though they're not exactly "girly girls" like from the older shows you were talking about). We saw a lot of both characters' struggles, especially when it comes to their self worth or always placing the blame/burder of everything on themselves and that made them some of the most human main characters ive ever seen in newer shows

    1. In regards to Sofia The First and Elena Of Avalor, the latter is actually a spinoff of the former since both shows are created by Craig Gerber. There's a Sofia The First special in season 3 called "Elena And The Secret Of Avalor" which simultaneously builds off of what Sofia The First has established for its overarching narratives while also acting as setup for Elena Of Avalor and its overarching narratives. Though for some reason, Disney Junior released Elena And The Secret Of Avalor after Elena Of Avalor came out. Also, even though neither show is created by a woman, both have plenty of female writers.
    2. In regards to more hyper feminine shows, might I recommend the Netflix show Princess Power? It is also a preschool show, but it is also a very fun and sweet show. It's also very female dominant given how the show centers on a group of four princesses (Rita Raspberry , Kira Kiwi, Penny Pineapple, and Bea Blueberry) helping people out, with particular emphasis placed on princesses and other female figures. It's based on a book written by women (Princesses Wear Pants, written by Savannah Guthrie and Allison Oppenheimer, who are also executive producers on the show). The showrunner is female (Elise Allen, who's worked on many Barbie movies), as are the story editor (Sindy Boveda Spackman), directors (Donna Brockopp for most episodes, Katya Rosario Bowser for a few episodes, and Mara Soriano for 1 episode), and voice director (Allyson Bosch). Many of the producers are female (like Drew Barrymore). Also, even though Bea has 2 dads who appear sometimes, the most notable form of LGBTQ Representation comes from the episode "Princess Royal Wedding", where Rita's mother Queen Ryung marries Queen Olivia.

i mean the closest you can get to girly styled shows like that in this modern age is the monster high g3 reboot but even then it hardly has the girly girl elements in it which feels more like world building and exploring. Which is fine, but. Monsterhigh was always about fashion and makeup. Like modern feminism has pushed this narrative that hyper femininity is bad and restrictive but sometimes i like being a girly girl and getting my hair done or wearing lipstick and dresses. Theres nothing wrong with liking these things and its just fun to turn your brain off just to watch shows about ponies and rainbows and glitter and not have to worry about the stress of everyday life.

It's actually easy, studios used to make those girly girly shows to sell toys... but after a series of cancelled shows aimed at boys that ended up a hit among girls, they realized they could just make shows that were as gender neutral as possible to not alienate boys from watching it, but girls would still buy the toys, since boys absolutely wouldn't touch girly merch (*cough*BS*Cough*) but girls would totally buy merch aimed at boys, they could save money on shows targeted at girls and use that money in a show that boys would watch as well.

It feels like the knock off version of a Disney movie lol her personality is "adorkable" and she doesn't seem to have anything outside of that. Adorkable, wants her grandad to get his wish. So I wouldn't say she's a girls girl no. So stripped down a character. I would be generous to say they didn't want to offend anyone, but I think they just didn't want to risk her personality interfering with a pretty unclear plot that they squeezed into movie shape. Yes. I would like to add that they made Asha the epitome of "I'm not like other girls". Merida was a tomboy, but still, tomboys are another example of feminine expression, too.
Asha was made to be a "girl" visually, physically, but that's about it. It's a similar issue with what happened with Raya's characterization, as Raya, too, is not really a tomboy, but basically a male character written to have a girl's body (and it would've been a great chance to make Raya an egg transboy and THAT would've been interesting and/or explicit LGBTQ+ representation with a Disney protag if it hypothetically happened, but I digress).
Whenever I see any of those wonderful deleted scenes it physically sickens me to remember what the actual finished product ended up being. Sure, it's not the worst thing ever, but it's what it represents, and also its objectively worse than most, if not all Disney direct to DVD sequels, as those were garbage, but had some ounce of creativity poured into them, for better or for worse, while Wish had the creativity stripped away by executives.

Can't have them work together, or have them presented as equals. That would send the "wrong message." Can't have a positive character focused on beauty. That gives, "the wrong message." I have been asked for a recap of Elena of Avalor, which makes this my time to shine. Prepare for an essay!
Mild spoilers ahead, but I'll do my best to keep the big spoilers out, and focus mainly on stuff you need to know to understand the special, which sets up the show. I do have to spoil the special though, in order to explain the show.
So, to explain EoA, I need to also explain Sofia the First. Sofia became a princess when her mother married the king of Enchancia. She was feeling insecure, so her dad, King Roland gave her a necklace that he'd been told protected princesses. This was the Amulet of Avalor, which was previously worn by Roland's sister Tilly. When choosing the necklace though, it actually called out to him. He didn't choose it, rather it started glowing on it's own when he was picking out a present for Sofia (important later).
The amulet also has a legend behind it. "With each deed performed, for better or worse, a power is given, a blessing or curse." Sofia ends up being granted powers by the amulet. Any time she does something good, she gets a power. When she saves a baby bird, she gains the power to talk to animals. When she does something bad though, it curses her, and she has to make up for what she did to remove the curse. The amulet also connects the wearer to all other princesses through time and space. There's even a 4th, secret power, which Sofia learns from her Aunt Tilly. It can take her to the Secret Library, which is a magical library that keeps track people and their stories that have turned sour. Sofia's job here is that she needs to help the stories find a happy ending (important later). The amulet's power is actually limited more than it should be though, due to a single event that happened 40 years prior to the start of the show. This is where we switch to the plot of EoA.
On Elena's 16th birthday, she was given the Amulet of Avalor, and told it would always protect her. Not long after, the Kingdom of Avalor was attacked by an evil sorceress named Shuriki. Shuriki used her magic to kill Elena's parents, and tried to kill Elena too, but the amulet protected her and pulled her inside of it. She was found by her royal wizard, Alakazar, who formed a plan to free her from the amulet. It was going to take time though, so he sealed Elena's sister and grandparents in a painting to protect them from Shuriki, and went on a journey to find a princess who would be able to help free Elena from the amulet. He wasn't able to do this in his own lifetime, so he left the amulet in Enchancia, and turned himself into a magic book in the Secret Library.
Fast forward back to Sofia, and we find that Sofia is having a dream about Shuriki invading Avalor, and attacking Elena. She wakes up and finds that her amulet is telling her she needs to go to the Secret Library. When she gets there, Alakazar's book comes out and tells her Elena's story. It turns out that Elena had been the one to make the amulet glow when Roland was looking for a present for Sofia. Elena had sensed that Sofia might be the one to finally free her, so she tested Sofia through powers and curses, and sent her the dream when she felt Sofia was ready.
Since her family was already planning to find somewhere to go for summer vacation, Sofia suggested they go to Avalor. When they get there, we find that Elena's cousin Esteban is also working for Shuriki, in an attempt to try and keep her from finding a way to hurt his grandparents and little cousin in the painting. Sofia also meets the jaquins, who are the protectors of Avalor, but were unable to stop Shuriki from taking over. Since they couldn't stop her, they made due by taunting and pranking her instead. They agreed to help Sofia, and take her to Alakazar's old house to find his grandson, Mateo.
Mateo was a self taught wizard, but he had to keep his studies secret since Shuriki had banned all magic that wasn't her's. He summons Alakazar's spirit guide Zuzo, who tells them where they need to take the amulet to free Elena. Sofia ended up needing the use of some of her powers in order to free Elena, but it works, and Elena emerges the same age as when she was first drawn into the amulet. There's a bit of filler, Elena has to learn a lesson, and then they wrap up by defeating Shuriki and freeing Elena's family. Sofia goes back home with her family, and now the amulet no longer curses her, and she only needs to wish for a power to receive it. She can also now be summoned to help other princesses, instead of only summoning them to help herself.
The EoA show picks up right after this, with Elena being unable to officially take over the throne since she's still technically 16, so she's named crown princess with a grand council of advisors that advise her. These people being her grandmother and grandfather, her cousin Esteban, and her best friend Naomi, whom she meets in episode 1 and is teased during the special explaining Elena's backstory. The show mainly revolves around various problems that pop up around Avalor that Elena has to solve, as well as her learning what it takes to rule a kingdom.
It actually has some really mature overarching plots, which I won't spoil, but really help the show to resonate with older audiences as well. Highly recommend if you like magic, adventure, and comedy!

No but this is EXTREMELY relatable cuz now I can't even watch a show without it having like I'm not like other girls and I'm different!! I'm a girly girl and I would like to see a nice main girly girl character that's not portrayed as the antagonist or mean girl of a show!! Ofc ppl can still make I'm not like other girls the main characters but it would be nice if they would make some other shows with girly girls that aren't the mean girls, like now the phrase ''I'm not like other girls'' is like totally wrong lol cuz almost every main girl character either loves cars or skateboarding and hates clothes and makeup so that's like the ''norm'' now so if you're a girly girl just say you aren't like other girls cuz being a girly girl is different noww!!! Oop sry for the long msg

Jem is an 80s animated cartoon. It's super upfront about the main characters being girly girls. In the show, you follow an 80s pop band named Jem and The Holograms and their adventures against The Misfits (who I would argue are pretty girly just in a more edgy way). Overall, it's a fun and hilarious show mind you some of the animation is wonky but it still holds up.
Anyway, I completely agree with the points you expressed in this video and find that it's a shame that so many higher-ups get the wrong idea about expressing femininity as well as female characters in general. I myself am more of a tomboy, but still feel enticed to dress in a hyper feminine way and it sucks it's not being so readily presented in media, particularly children's animation the way it used to be. I actually just watched your Carmen Sandiego review video! I'm pretty sure it can't be categorized as a girly girl show, but the protagonist exemplifies a lot of qualities I feel most films/shows now completely miss out on.

9:26 I agree that we need an equal balance of girly and tomboyish characters, but isn't what you said at the timestamp the entire point of the movie. (While the movies morals on trust... need work) The whole point is that Raya feels she can't be vulnerable, she can't trust others, because the last time she did it led to the world almost getting destroyed.

Pippi Langstrumpf is a character from a German film, she also has an animated series, although I've seen more of the film than the cartoon
I speak as a person from Poland
Pippi is a cult in these areas, at least on the part of Generation

Pippi is a girl whose father is a sailor, so Pippi lives without her parents (Her mother is dead), Pippi has superhuman strength and creativity, has a horse and a monkey, wears stockings with two different colors (Her surname comes from the name "Stocking", however, it is in German, but there is also a Polish version of this surname)

Here are some girly shows I suggest:
IDK if you've seen this but:
Sabrina the Animated Series/Sabrina's Secret Life: A cartoon duology series based on Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Ever After High: A series about the children of fairytale characters going to school.
    Monster High
Descendants movies and Wicked World cartoon: Basically Disney's answer to EAH. The aesthetic is more punk than frilly fancy glitter as it focuses more on the children of villains as the main characters instead of heroes' children, but I'm a girl and it's amazing.
Polly Pocket: Polly Pocket got a reboot on Netflix, it's not connected to the 2000s movies, but it's in its own universe. Basically Polly is a child genius who inherets a locket from her grandma, which can shrink her and her friends Lila Draper and Shani Smith. They go on adventures that are very girly themed and have to outwit Griselle, a British woman who wants to take over the world.
    Kim Possible
Madeline: A cartoon about a French orphan girl who lives with 12 other orphan girls in an orphanage in Paris run by a friendly nun.
The Aladdin and Little Mermaid cartoons. Yes they exist.
What About Mimi?: A Canadian show about a redhead girl who always looks on the bright side of life. It's not special, but the aesthetic is really cute and it's a calm, easygoing show.
Unicorn Academy: A new Netflix cartoon.
    The Ghost and Molly McGee
Jem: If you haven't seen Jem, it's actually AMAZING I'M NOT KIDDING! It's about a woman name Jerrica who is the owner of a music company. Her late father leaves her a computer which creates holograms, and turns her and her friends and sister into the pop band Jem and the Holograms. They also have rivals in a punk band called the Misfits, and in season 3, a Led Zeppelin-esque German band called the Stingers. Also, the Holograms run an orphanage and they use the money they get from their concerts not selfishly, but to help the orphanage and other people in need. It's glorious 80s camp, the songs all SLAP, and many 80s and 90s kids including my mom, grew up with it. They also had a doll line in the 80s, rebooted comics aimed at an older audience (which are also great). It was also extremely diverse and sometimes touched on heavy topics. The Holograms have black, Asian, and Mexican members, the Misfits have Pizzazz, who's Hungarian-American, Roxy, who's Italian, and Jetta, who's British. And the orphans are diverse too! As for heavy topics, they include an episode where an orphan gets addicted to drugs, a recurring orphan who wants to find her dad (who was in the Vietnam War), an episode about Jerrica and Kimber (the sister)'s parents dying, Roxy being illiterate, episodes with the Holograms foiling an attempted coup and saving the president, and an episode where Riot (the lead singer of the Stingers) gets character development. He's usually an arrogant prick who tries to get with Jem, but one episode goes into his past as a child with an abusive dad who shames him for wanting to be in a band instead of in the army, all while their bickering stresses out his mom who D*ES, and an episode where Jem's friend Danse goes to Croatia to find out about her parents, and discovers her ballerina mom's manager blackmailed her and had her dad sent to jail for a crime he didn't commit. Then he tries to force Danse to stay forever or else the Holograms would suffer the same ate, Sorry for the long tangent but Jem is an amazing show and I would suggest it.
We are missing girly shows for real. But Totally Spies is back, and Winx Club is coming back, so that's nice

The thing missing in cartoons now is positive femininity practiced by actual biological females. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing, but respect for non-girly characters, though it is ok to be feminine. Girls and women should not have to choose between being feminine and being strong. We don't expect men to choose between being gentle and being masculine.
