Love how only the optical threshold glues every track together, it is also a great way to start using this compressor, after the glue, you will slowly learn the rest, but it glues as easily as nothing else.
Thorough review as always sir. Just got this for $29.99 on the Black Friday sale!! After watching your review I feel like I got the deal of the century!! Sounds amazing!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Just got this plug-in, and found it extremely daunting at first glance. This video, however, was a wonderfully in-depth tutorial that made it all make sense in a simple to follow way. Thank you!
A sidechain filter is just a sinewave with a highpass filter on it feeding the compressors sidechain. So the higher you put it the less the compressor will react to low frequencies
still not understanding this whole discrete process. would help to have a few more details around the benefits of using both or switching to duel mono. clearer discussion around the thought process with these steps.
Wow! It`s about time they released a native version. A welcome undertaking to Plugin Alliance. I always knew they were behind that UA good sound. Thanks, Mike for the concise review on this Legendary Mastering Grade Compressor.
Interesting review, but once you add the guitars back in, aren't they negating the drum sound you set up with their nonstop sustain? To actually get the drum sound you set up with the drums soloed, wouldn't it be wiser to set up a drum bus, and put the Shadow Hills on that, so it wouldn't be affected by the guitars? The drum sound just seemed to go away once the guitars were put back in.
Another Great Review and Presentation , I am not sure if i want this to My Collection , Yet . Look's great though , I am sure it will be useful for Something . And I would Think that You (Mike) Will do a Review On the Purple Audio MC77 ? Thank's Again Mike . Al way's really Great review's and Presentation's .
Thank you for this video about this monster. It definitely has its own quirks and character, and it is difficult to estimate where to best use it because, depending on the settings especially with the discrete section, the effect can be very drastically not musical. The discrete can squash your audio to a pulp after any transient, but not necessarily in a musical way, but rather in a very "pumpy" way. The output transformers can make a subtle but noticeable effect that is very musical. However, I think the choice of music to demonstrate this was not good in the video because it is by its nature already full of harmonic distortion, so it is impossible to appreciate the harmonics being added by the transformers. Where these output transformer types make a noticeable difference is with clean, clear audio sources, where the harmonic distortion introduced can really be noticed. I would urge Mike to redo that comparison using maybe a vocal track, or a nice acoustic mix. You will really appreciate then what that output section can do, and it is subtle but really apparent and useful. It is hard to find examples on how to make best use of this wonderful beast. The original hardware unit retails for about $10K in the US, so this free emulation is an unbelievable gift, letting you put as many of these as you want on your tracks without having to mortgage your life. Thank you!
@@bx_dirk2771 Yep you're correct this is a emulation of the real thing I believe Michael White explained that to us already but thanks for the heads up.
Hmm...I couldn't hear any difference with the transformer...I though that maybe my ears are not so good, so then I decided to try a spectrum analyser. Absolutely nothing changed...I like it as a compressor, but the transformer tone thing...not buying it...
Even on MacBook speakers you can hear the difference between the Iron and Steel pretty clearly. Brings a different clarity to the punch/low end. The Nikel less so, but much easier to hear on monitors!

That's a GREAT tool! A little bit difficult to set at the beginning, but once you learn how to use it it's MAGICAL!
this is fantastic. i cant believe they are giving it away for free right now.

Yes, Great Deal!
Lucky you I got you t for free
Thanks for the uploads Mike - really learn a lot from your courses but I also love the plugin reviews for fun. :)
Thanks Dirk!

I find it amazing what these plugins can do to your mix!
Just got this for free I’m glad I’m seeing this tutorial
Can you see see the preset selector bar up top? For some reason I don't have that as an option...or it's hidden
SHMC is always in my mastering chain. SPL iron on mix buss

Great video Mike! In your opinion, Shadow Hills or SPL Iron?
same question here
Thanks Mike.

They just did!
How come everyone I see putting videos up have presets? I can't find any presets
The music that you use is already so compressed that i nearly hear the difference...lol (I own the Shadow Hills, it's an awesome compressor!)

@@mixingwithmike Nice ! I do not know why , But i love Purple Audio Gear . Review is Going be nice (I hope ) ! Thank's Mike .🆒🆒🆒🆒👍👍😎☮
The main thing is how much does it cost?
That's a great question! Let's wait to see how Dirk is going to price this one out.
Steve Stern the question is how does it compare against the actual hardware.

Sounds amazing but the GUI is a mess. Thanks for the video
I'm sure that was a big discussion during the design of this at bx. It has the exact same look as the original which is also a bit messy.
GUI is a mess? That's how the hardware looks...

in my studio there a big one..
the nikel transfo is like a +1.5db @10k for exemple. i think.
