As someone who's not musically trained, listening to Maestro Barenboim's exposition of this piece makes me feel both humbled and blessed that I am part of this creation called humanity capable of such simple beauty.
I have the same reaction. He's not only a much better pianist than me, he has a far better understanding of the structure of the music; I just read the notes and try to hit them.
Barenboim ignores the rhythm in the score and makes up his own. Horrible. That may be why his Clair de Lune sounds different than yours. He doesn't count!
I never realized the first sentence is actually of syncopation since my first time playing clair de lune twenty years ago. What a revelation! Time to revisit this masterpiece.
Please be sure to place 9 beats in a measure, as indicated in the score, and certainly NOT reflected in Barenboim's playing, whose rhythm here is disgraceful.
I dont get how anyone can dislike this video. the master is teaching people how to appreciate the music in its rightful form, its construct. Not to only indulge ourselves in this pieces' nice melody and atmosphere but he teaches us to understand the logic behind it which authenticates its mastery.

After a day of work on Sunday, on a place where there's no subtillities and lot of consumerism, it is just so kind that I came up to this video with Daniel Barenboim explaining details on Claire de Lune. Now I'm filled with love. Thank you maestro for always having thie will to transmit your love for Music.
Saying that the first phrase begins, "in the air" as opposed to the second time with a more elaborate left hand being, "on the ground" is such a simple but beautiful metaphor. It's perfect. I'll never hear it the same way.
Thank you sir, for bringing a bit of culture and beauty to TH-cam. This music reminds us of the best of humanity. In this world of war, hatred, oppression, and destruction, if only we could all focus on the good, the beautiful, the sublime.
I just watched a video of the recording of Debussy playing Clair de Lune. This has all the wonderful feeling of the composer's own performance. Mr. Barenbolim obviously knows his music. Lovely!
i learned it about a year and a half ago, still trying to master each step at a time. I hope I'm able to finish this in time for my grannies to listen.
I very much appreciate that Barenboim is one of the few performers (another is Lang Lang) who draw attention to the gentle dissonances in the piece rather than trying to make them just softly dissolve into the harmony. It enhances the overall wistful effect of the piece dramatically.
Seeing this makes me realize that learning what is written on the sheet music is merely the first step- the beauty and magic comes long after (and sometimes not at all).
i now understand why debussy was once titled as the 'monet of piano', his pieces are phrased so beautifully yet still robust and firm, it is beautiful how he can shape it using odd chords or phrasing/rhythms in his pieces which can complement other phrases in unimaginable ways. He is an impressionist of music.
Thank you so much Maestro Barenboim, never stop believe in, only music is our salvation and you are doing a great job indeed, supporters are always here to backup you.. that's what fans are for
Admirable.
