- Here's the binaural version of the video I uploaded a couple of days ago about a cool exhibition of the Swiss Hornet Display Team's F/A-18 Hornet on the shores of Lake Maggiore, near the city of Locarno, in Switzerland, for the 2023 ''Luci e Ombre'' festival. Captain Yannick ‘Fönsi’ Zanata was inside the cockpit of the American fighter jet.
Over the years I've tried severalI configurations and equipment for these recordings to the point of deciding to only use static scenes (with the gear mounted on a tripod or directly in my hands) in order to
better highlight the 3D/surround effect of this unique stereo recording.
You can better watch the maneuvers of the F/A-18 at this link: • Swiss F/A-18 Hornet Di...

-- What the hell is a 3D/Binaural recording? --
Binaural recordings are reproductions of sound the way human ears hear it. Traditionally, recordings have been made using mono or stereo. Mono uses a single microphone while stereo uses two, spaced apart from each
other. Binaural recording takes the stereo method one step further by placing two microphones approximately
at the same average distance that exists between one and the other human ear. To recreate the best effect
you must put the microphones in your ears or by using a "dummy head" (wherein a mannequin head is outfitted
with a microphone in each ear) because having a real head or a head shape that separates the two
microphones is what makes the magic works. In fact if a car passes on your left side the sound will take a
few extra microseconds to reach the right ear and it will also be louder in one ear (left) than the other.
This is caused by the fact we have a thick skull and spongy brain between the two ears and sound waves
interact with the physical constitution of the listener and the surrounding space. Instead of following the
cars like I'm used to do with my 'standard', stereo videos, keeping the microphone static (and so the
camera) the surround and depth effect typical of the binaural recordings is enanched.

THANKS FOR WATCHING AND SUBSCRIBE!!!
This is the most accurate recording of what it sounds like in person
Glad you liked it!
Actually
The contrast between the quietly lapping water and the thundering F/A-18 is truly awesome!
These guys what are flying these kind of jets are nuts and have hell of big balls 😅😊
You deserve all the subs and likes on your videos. I bet the recording device for this wasnt cheap... Love it
❤ We watched the first year out for the FA/18 back in the 80s Daytona Air show. Hth Harrier jump jet blue a hole in the runway 😂? Times of our lives still finding time to head RUSH.
Im not really into planes but this is phenomenal. The sound is the best ive ever heard from any kind of "vehicle" video
This video and “Artemis Launch Experience” are in my favorites
Please use this recording format for all your jet audio’s! With the static mic and the right headphones you can hear the F18 fly AROUND and ABOVE you as opposed to always sounding like it’s right in front of you because you’re tracking it. Honestly one of the greatest aviation videos on the platform and dropped in my favorites list!
2:20 Cobra Maneuver!
Holy sounding
I used to work at El Toro and left at Tustin and we used to sit on our back porch and listen to the Jets this is really darn close to what they sound like 14 Mi away
Brilliant, thanks
No worries!
The only problem I find with the binaural recordings is that they tend to be quite squeeky with a lot of 2k-7k hz action which doesn't sound really natural. If that can somehow be overcome the effect would be much more preferable for me personally.
Yeah I notice the same thing too. I'd like to understand if it's just a problem of the cheaper binaural mics or not. I'm currently using a 3Dio Free Space, the less expensive of their range, and previously I had the Soundman OKM II but that audio feature was there in any case. 3Dio also have the Pro II which has a totally different capsules from DPA Microphones. They should perform way better than the one of my binaural but Pro II costs 5 times more 😪
@@19Bozzy92ndChannel yea I know they're expensive as F... I think the squeekyness could be adjusted with a little post production filters, you know to even it out a bit and get a more natural representation of the sound ☺️ I could give it a try if you want 😃
