I grew up in rural Central CA and knew a couple of kids in school that I've realized could be a real life embodiment of Rip and Beth. Physically she and Beth are twins but without the booze, thank the Almighty. Her drug of choice was love. He was the alpha in his class, he looked more like Wings Hauser, Coles dad... but his personality was obnoxious and mercurial, more like Jamie. They weren't particularly outstanding kids by themselves, she was self centered, he was a rich family bully... but they fell for each other the very first yr, and they made each other better as a couple. They got themselves knocked up his senior and her junior year of high school, their families helped them get married and settled in. His family was well off, with doctors and a grandpa rancher with both family and holdings in cotton and cattle in two states. Maybe not quite at the Dutton level but still pretty impressive. The grandpa lived and ranched well into his 90s, so these two bought their own spread of land about 40 miles away and started raising cattle for the local dairies. Their first yr, I remember his mom, a rancher's daughter herself but who married a doctor, telling my mom in church that she suspected her new daughter in law was struggling with ranch life, because she'd wasted a whole box of shotgun shells trying to kill a rattler who'd crawled under the porch. She killed the porch boards just fine lol. Her hubby came home bone weary after a 16 hr day moving cattle, calmly scooped up the pissed off but patient rattler and relocated it safely, far away from the house, after a reminder about the need for rodent control and the balance of nature. They had three kids I thin 6:32 k, and year by year just continued to make a go of it. I read late last year that after over 50 yrs of marriage and ranching, they have retired, selling their main ranch and moving into town (sadly, apparently none of their kids aspired to be ranchers, so that particular legacy in their branch of that family has ended). But their pact has flourished, regardless of early circumstance. In time, she learned to ride horses and work cattle with the best of them, under her husband's expert tutelage. I have grown to respect them for what they became together. When I first met them she was frivolous and scattered, he was a rich kid bully whose parents were pushing him hard to go away to college - perhaps because his brother had recently become a doctor, perhaps to try and separate him from this girlfriend, or perhaps simply unaware of his passion for the life his grandpa lived. I wonder if they watch this show, and if they do, if some things it portrays ring true for them. I hope so. Farm life can also be a very treacherous and hard one. My across the street neighbors were farmers with two teenage sons, some of the nicest, best looking boys ever, who loved baseball, baked chocolate chip cookies and worked alongside their dad every summer... I had a crush on the oldest one but he was oblivious, so I admired him silently from afar.. Well, that oldest boy, after serving 10 yrs in the military and coming home to be both a farmer and a mechanic, suffered severe freeze burns and propane poisoning, dying at age 29 from a freak accident while filling his truck with propane alone on the farm. He left a wife and young kids. Within two years the remaining brother became a widower. I pray for farmers and their families every time I think of that little town, which is often. God bless.

The thing that kills me about the meadow scene is I know in my heart it is foreshadowing. She will die first somehow and Rip is going to bury her in that meadow she loved. I knew as soon as I saw that scene - why they included it. 😭 I won't be ready when that happens.
