Sony need this lens to make their compact full frame more travel friendly. If they can do this lens perhaps they can do a new full frame fixed lens 28mm or 35mm f2.0 to replace the RX1R2. I think this would be a rip-roaring success with those who, like me love the RX1R2, want something a bit more modern but can’t afford a Leica Q3.
@@todanrg3 It can certainly be done, Pentax has an f1.9 43mm FF pancake lens. The question is if it can be done at Sony's current optical standards or at the flange distance of the Sony FE mount.
@@SimplestUsername Canon has a 40mm 2.8 pancake lens. BUT that is for DSLR, just like Pentax's 43mm. Mirrorless has smaller flange distance and that's why both Canon and Nikon made 28 and 26mm pancakes, not 40mm. It's much harder to design a longer pancake for mirrorless.
I just ordered the Viltrox 28. That being said, if Sony releases an excellent 28/2.8 pancake I would pick it up quickly. Would love to see this followed by a 40ish pancake and maybe something wider - like the Canon 16.
I would buy that without hesitation even if it was priced like the Nikon. If Sony were really surprised by the desire for pancake primes, that would be mildly infuriating.
Just ordered the Viltrox. However I will buy the Sony or the the Samyang interchangeable pancake system, depending which one is better. My wife and I have 2 cameras so we need 2 compact lenses.
Very interested in a 28mm pancake but would be happy to get a 28mm small G prime as well to expand out the trio. I own several Sony bodies but my travel pair is the A7CII and A7CR so while the G primes are not the smallest they work great. Mobility, travel photography… we need more compact/pancake lenses. Particularly for third party manufacturers, and APSC cameras (where we value compacteness)… we need more COMPACT lenses. We already have those crazy 0.95/1.2/1.4 aperture lenses. Now, let’s manufacture medium/long telephoto lenses as much as compact as possible (2.8/4.0 or even 5.6… but compact for daylight use).
I have the TTArtisan 27mm f2.8 compact lens, maybe a pancake and a half in thickness. It works great on my a6600, producing very nice and colorful photos with excellent sharpness. For those times when you are not trying to achieve the greatest sharpness but more casual photography, this does more than a good job. No disappointment here. Wider pancake lenses will be welcome on aps-c cameras. Though I would use these rumored 20mm lens from Sony on my aps-c cameras for a nice 30mm effective lens.
I really want a good quality 28mm lens to use on a A7R IVA so I would be interested in this, although, to be honest I would prefer one in the same series as the 24/40/50mm lenses - I have the 40mm.
I had almost give up on getting actually good pancakes on Sony for street photography... fortunately I didn't sell my a6100, yet. With TTartisan, 7artisans and now Viltrox and Sony themselves it looks like I could have options!
I have multiple camera bodies in both DSLR & Mirrorless camera and it have some compact prime lens for Pentax ,Olympus, Panasonic and Two Sony G lens, the 24mm and 40mm, for my style of photography the pancakes are too narrow on the camera bodies. The newest Viltrox from what I heard is so thin that it is a fixed aperture f 4.5 lens with auto focus.
I’ve been hoping for a 28mm f/2.8 full-frame pancake lens from Sony ever since I bought my first Sony full-frame camera! If this rumor is true, it would be amazing. Fast, point and shoot pancake lens, there are some, but there is always some quality issue, not to mention impossible close focus. Certainly a field to compete in.

Sony has some holes in their lens line up, the pancake, and a 100-300 2.8 among others. I know sigma has the 28-105 f2.8, but Sony needs a 24-105mm 2.8 to compete with the Canon offering. Nikon is killing both Canon and Sony with their lens line up and how quickly they are coming to market. Nikon has the 100-400 and yes I know about sigmas offering.
