    My favorite all around rifle. I inherited mine & my Dad bought it in early 1952 and it was 3-4 years old. Everything it has hit have been one shot kills & most fell over dead where they stood.
    I make notes on your bullets, loads, powders, primers, BC & SD etc. Lots of WAY useful on your channel and thanks so much for doing the work and posting these.

    I’ve recently acquired 100 NOS Winchester brass for 348. I’ve got plenty of powders and primer. Also several sources for bullets from folks who have a lot and are willing to sell to me at a very good price. All I have to do now is complete negotiations with a friend for purchase of one of his 71’s!😂 He’s making me a pretty good deal. I think.

    My Win 71 is at MOA with RL 19.......20 years with RL 19 and the 250 Barnes FN in Alaska.
    I gave both my sons a 1952 Win 71 for xmas last year. All our Win 71 have Redfield Peep sights. Sure is a good 200 yard gun.

    I feel fortunate to have a couple Browning 71's in .348. 1 in each barrel length, My Favorite lever action rifles. I have scrounged up quite a bit of ammo and components over the years. A 71 with a receiver sight and sling swivels is just about perfect. In north america nothing except maybe the biggest Bears is to much. Always enjoy videos about the .348

    I have a browning 71 .348 but have hunted with it. I love lever guns and have shot much game with them. Mostly with my Marlin 45/70's. I have shot water buffalo and Red stag in Argentina with my marlin cowboy in 45/70 using the 405 gr Woodlieghs and it was great fun! I'm planning on going to Africa for Cape buffalo this year and will be shootin my 1886 Winchester in 45/90 and 405gr Woodlieghs at around 2150fps and Barnes solids right behind them!

      Look for a channel by leverguns 50. He has a 50-110 and 45-90 and really demonstrates the capability of the big levers. Woodleighs are pretty great and I bet those solids just keep on rolling!

      Are you saying you cannot hunt with a Winchester .348, 1886 or a model 92 in Ohio? Why not, you say you hunt with a Marlin in 45-70 cal. for deer (so it can't be the calibers), why can't you use the Winchesters?

    You're one lucky dude to have such a fine rifle.
    It would indeed be something to give a man pause shooting such a rifle with its totally original configuration in such excellent condition, out of concern for its considerable collector value; but it's in a way nice that you have one that had its barrel bobbed, making it much easier to justify taking it out hunting.
    It's terrific to see a dedicated hunter using that beast for bringing home lots of top quality protein.

      I've got a Winchester 71 .348 Deluxe made in 1937, four digit serial number. I bought it in the early 80's and hunted whitetail's successfully for many years. Mine has the standard open sights. And I agree, it's absolutely the finest lever action rifle going. I wouldn't trade it for any other one.

    I finally ran across a slew of Model 71 rifles lately. There was a local collector hereabouts, he put up two original Model 71 Winchester Deluxe models, both excellent, although his prices are a bit high. With those he put up for sale three Browning 71's, he had bought one for each of his sons and none of them wanted the guns or did anything with them. So he put all five up for sale, two of the Brownings have sold, the third is a carbine, new in the box, never fired, that one had a very nice price tag of $925, so I put a deposit on the gun, I realized I wasn't ever going to get a better chance. Nice thing is I have a good 9-10 months before hunting season to work up some loads for it.

    Might try sizing down Speer .358 cal 180 and 220 flat points to 348 for cheaper and solid alternative. Watched a video a while back where this was done with the 180’s in a 348 and performance was unaffected by the sizing operation. Think the TH-cam channel was Leverguns50. Just a suggestion. Concerning the "Weird Primer" I'll check how it's made on this 50-110. I already did some hard conversion such as 7.62x54r Steel Berdan into Boxer primer ;) I have the tools and also a lathe..... So hope this would be fun to do ;).

    Excellent video on a fine rifle and much ignored caliber! I also appreciated hearing how you felt about the "modification" that had been done to the rifle as I feel the same way about my fine old Savage 99 in .250-3000 (it says so right on the barrel....In other words NOT just .250 Savage) that a previous owner apparently tried to turn into a varmit rifle at some point. I paid well under $1000.00 for my '99 in 2017 and don't feel guilty at all taking it into the woods and brambles.

    • @north61
      @north61  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I managed to find a Savage 99 in 284 Win. Great caliber! Somehow the collectors status of these hit later in Canada so it was a great price. But. yes the modifications on my 71 helped me own a great firearm that I can actually use without guilt. Thanks for the sub!

    • @fdmackey3666
      @fdmackey3666 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I must have scratched my '99 itch at just the right time as within weeks of purchasing the rifle mentioned above I saw the prices basically hit the roof. The funny thing is, I don't collect firearms for the sake of collecting them. I've always been a practical kind of person who only buys those things, in this case a rifle, that are fully functional, or can be made fully functional, and are practical for helping fill the freezer.

      I don't think there are any consistent rules. In this rifle Magnum Primers make a big difference with IMR 4451. I have shot enough groups to say this with statistical certainty. With H414 no such pattern exists and I use standard primers. I wish I was getting lighter but in truth my black shirt is simply slimming. Still a fat lad underneath but working on it.

      Welcome to the club Remy. Hornady sells the brass but here it's almost as cheap to buy the ammo from Hornady (It;s very good) and use it , Reforming is a problem. You can neck down 50-110 brass but it is hard to find as well.

    • @north61
      @north61  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to the 348 Club! The 50-110 can be necked down but hard to find. If you can deal with the weird primers(haha) the 11x59 Gras can be necked down but corrosive primers might have degraded the brass. The 8mm Lebel will be too short. Best bet is to buy new Hornady ammo and reuse the brass once fired.

      north61 and Mike Price If you'd like a partition type bullet in .429 diameter still in production since Nosler discontinued their entire Partition Gold (partition bullets for handguns) line, you'll both be happy to know that Swift currently makes their A-Frame in that diameter with 240 grain, 280, grain, and 300 grain offerings.
      Assuming that you can get decent groups with them, you should be able to hunt even the likes of moose, as long as you're within relatively short range to maximize velocity on impact, say about 50 yards.
