Dude I just had the same thought. He popped up on my feed and decided to give him a try. He’s like that dude Andy Pudecomme (spelling?) who narrates on the Headspace meditation app. Very soothing delivery. Love this guy and can’t figure out why!
Matt, I recently played in our men’s league and for the 1st time I saw someone use a chipper and I was really impressed with the results he was getting with it. I thought to myself after he told me it was 35 degrees, to go look up my manufacturer’s web site of my irons to find the angles of all the clubs. I found that my 9 iron was 36 degrees (close enough!). I went out the next time using my 9 iron as my “chipper”. Just used a putt stroke a voila! Worked like a charm almost holed a 40 footer. I’ve been using it since and my chips (as long as my feel is working that day) is now my go to way of chipping. I have a lot of confidence chipping now. By the way you asked your caddie for your 9 iron to demonstrate and she brings you 2 clubs. What’s with that? You just threw down one of them without looking so I guess you knew which one was your 9? You can teach the blind golfing with that attribute! 😊 I really loved this short video! ❤
I’ve been out of golf for 8 years since my brother died in 2016. Been thinking about getting back in. This guy is inspirational, takes your mental handicap “out of play”. I enjoy.
Hi David, I’m sorry for your loss, man. Lost a couple myself that I used to play golf with from time to time when they were in town visiting. I quit playing for twenty-two years, as I was so frustrated with my game - or lack thereof. Started getting back into it, slowly, about three years ago. Lost some power over those years, but I am enjoying “re+learning” my swing and hopefully improving it. This nice fella’s videos are now instrumental in my approach to the game, AND enjoyment of it. You may have come for the bucket hat, awesome shirt, shades and great S.African accent, but you’ll stay for the simple, direct, and highly effective teaching and unmatched motivation and encouragement!
Had a dunlop chipper in the bag for ages, don't even know where I got it. I love using it just because it feels fun to hit around the green and always end up closer to the pin than if I used any other club.
Just started playing golf recently and I think finding this channel is hands down the best thing to help me get better and enjoy the game more! Preeesh 🤙🏼
Ironically my chipper arrives today. Totally agree with the almost 'taboo' nature of it with some golfers. Does not phase me though, because I am a MAN trying to break 80 😎. Awesome video. Can't wait for the next 👍
The Cleveland smart sole chipper has been a godsend for me since I bought it. I couldn’t care less about what people say, it’s dropped my score incredibly. Very hard to miss hit it.
@@annifridl2820 agreed. The # of close chip ins has increased noticably. I played a scramble tournament last week and nobody even knew I was using a chipper. The smart sole looks like any other club. Very cool
These are all good options. Great video. I have a friend that has a chipper and he is wicked good with the silly thing. He is a 13 handicap. (he is 71).

I tried closing the face slightly with a gap wedge and sliding my hands down the grip. It serves the same purpose as lifting the heel of the club off the ground. It is a guarantee GIOTG. Keep going Baus!
Adjusting grip pressure helps when using the Texas up to that distance . Tighter from further away less tight increments the closer to the edge of the green you get,and hit normal pace.Takes out the quess work of how it will react. Thanks for sharing your knowledge .
Matt, I love how you are always so relaxed and have an "it's no big deal" attitude about your golf skills. It helps me relax and hit better when I think about you doing it.
Great lesson for chipping off of short grass. Any thoughts on how to chip from wet heavy greenside rough? I usually just say a prayer and try to get it on somewhere.
Thanks for the reply. I've been practicing with a four hybrid just to try it out. It comes out a little hot but I'll add it to my options around the green.
I confess when I saw the title of the video was "what to do if you crap yourself around the green" that this was going to be a handy guide to discretely clean up the mess without your playing partners noticing, so I was a little disappointed with the content. Perhaps this will be covered in a later video (I find woodland courses are not too bad but parkland courses often lack suitable cover).
@@KTS_85 - No, technically a Texas Wedge is a putter from off the green. But, some here apply a loser definition to mean any non-wedge club, like a 8/7 iron. This bumps the ball off the ground briefly and still gets the ball rolling on the green in a similar fashion to a putt. Technically the 8/7 iron would just be a “bump and run”. But, some people still call it a Texas Wedge for some reason.
Thank you for all these tips playa in chief. Thanks to your philosophy I progressed real fast in my first year of golf. Tried the strokes gained thing, meh, doesn't work i'm not a statistic. I play off 11 and chip with a hybrid around the green. its such a 25HCP move and people give me grief over it but they don't laugh when I get up and down all the time with it.
So funny bro I was just thinking about your older video on the rule of twelve a couple days ago when I heard somebody trying to explain chipping to a student. I was just thinking in my head, man, the lower we keep the ball the better it gets, it’s so less stress and it’s such a simplified motion. All about removing those mental blocks and removing the hiccups in our brains. Seems to me the lower we go the easier it gets mentally and physically. 🤷🏼♂️
I had a revelation the other day. Cross handed or left hand low chipping. If Matthew fitz MCconaghey can use it why not me? But your tip on the toe down I used it from your 12 step video and it's magic. Thanks Baus
My secret to determining a line when putting from off the green: the fringe is basically a little downhill section of the putt and it will kick perpendicular to the meeting of the fringe and green. Changed my entire mindset about lines and helps with visualizing the pace after the ball gets on the surface. So it helps with that fear of hitting it too hard.
I play on a linksy course in TN, and I know not all courses encourage this. But I putt from 20 yards off the green anywhere possible. Up and down stats are magical in the year since I've started it.
The fringe is a downhill section? Can you explain that differently? I'd think you would play the fringe as an uphill section since you have to hit it harder through the fringe.
@jeffkliewer537 imagine you hit the putt from a foot into the fringe. Where the fringe meets the green is actually a downhill section of the putt because of the change in grass length.
The courses I play on in North East United States don’t have nearly this much short grass around the greens. There’s way more rough and a lot of times you are below the green. You’re forced to hit higher chip shots around the greens.
One of my buddies uses his putter from inside 75 yards. LOL. He gets a lot of laughs from people who aren't sued to seeing it, but he's pretty surgical and often gets closer than I do with wedges. He happens to be from Texas.
The Baus is great. He tells people to play their own game and use clubs they like. The number of have-a-say idiots in golf who seem to think a player should use what a pro would use is huge. GS has the BAUS attitude! Whadda advice giver
