The first time I heard this was the night before I went to rehab in 2013. There was such pain in my heart from my family finding out that I had been spending 100 a day on hydros and oxy. The worst part was that I had stolen from and lied to the people I love the most. I wasn’t even looking for this song I just heard it on a commercial. I played it in a loop for the rest of the night. I sang it in the shower in rehab. Now when I come back to it all those emotions just flood me and help me to remember why I left that life behind. Thank you for posting this as it was incredibly hard to find for a few years
This song was sung at the height of the Depression in the 1930s. Imagine singing about counting your blessings and hoping patiently for an end to poverty. Very moving.
While I agree with you that it is very moving, but waiting patiently for an end to poverty is about the dumbest thing a human being can do. As explained in "The Preacher and the Slave".
This song makes me grateful i grew up poor. Hard times are a lot easier when they were part of your upbringing, and you can still be happy and grateful for what you do have.
Beautiful rendition of one of the most timeless and enduring songs of all times. Those a composed piece, it sings and sounds like the the most authentic of folks tunes from the soul of humanity.
Personally, a favourite song of mine, I remember watching the 1984 television version of A Christmas Carol with my Grandmother when I was a child barely eight years old. I also remember her telling me about her childhood as the daughter of a sharecropper in the southeastern United States in 1930s-1940s. This song, by Stephen Foster, which asks it's listener to consider the plight of the less fortunate: absolutely does it's job. The fact that Stephen Foster, who, because of his anti-slavery views, caused his music to be despised and hated by his fellow Southerners, died in abject poverty, makes this song, I suppose, perhaps a bit tragically poetic: though I do not say that with any satisfaction or joy.
This is a great version of this song, It is a song that most men and women will fully understand as they think back on their lives of hard and sad times of loss, hurts, loneness, regret, yes the normal this that we all go through in life
Thank you very very much. Of the many versions of this song, this is my favorite, and I encountered it on TV when they played the trailer for Coppers. It used to be easy to find, and I'm so glad it's findable again, thanks to you.
A favorite song. The words are beautiful. Modern is perfect. In this rendition the words are number 1 and complimented by the artist but not overpowered
Thankyou for this version of Hard Times, so touching 💙 I love Arlo's ❤ version too. Let's hope 🙏 all will be good for 22. Peace and Love shall reign! 😌 💯💥💜
Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears While we all sup sorrow with the poor There's a song that will linger forever in our ears Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay There are frail forms fainting at the door Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more There's pale drooping maiden who toils her life away With a worn out heart, whose better days are over Though her voice it would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered all around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more
With respect, you left out a bit (my favorite verse of the song): It’s a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave, It’s a wail that is heard upon the shore It’s a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave Oh! Hard times come again no more.
Thank you for posting this. A lovely version, just perfect. If you would like to post my song on your page and let its joy go around the world, I would really appreciate it. Nice rendition of an American classic. Technically, btw, this is not a "folk song." It has a known composer, none other than the "father of American music" Stephen Foster.

and also the Civil War...
It's a pre-civil war song about the "hard times" that came on the cotton farmers in the late 40's.
HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN

It was first made popular during the American Civil War.

Me too!
Love this version. I sometimes just play it late nights to relax me.
This is good one, but the Emmylou Harris version is my favorite contemporary version. Worth checking out if you've never heard it.
I’ve missed hearing this song. Thank you for the upload.
Same story here
It makes me cry too often...I do love this song, because it touches my heart with every single tune...

I have waited so long for this this to be on youtube!!! thank you, you saint!!!!!
Man, this song used to be on youtube a few years ago but then it disappeared. SO happy to see it uploaded again. Thanks!
Thank you so much for uploading this. Been sorely missing this song. No one else’s version even comes close.
James Taylor and Yo-Yo Ma have a beautiful version.
Margi Clark eeehhhh I’ve tried it. It doesn’t do it for me. Which is odd because I love James Taylor but...idk for it can’t compare to this.
the version by the 2nd south carolina string band is by far my favorite.
Try the Gangstagrass version with Kaia Keta, it is very different but hauntingly beautiful
Jennifer Warnes, or preferably The McGarrigles et al on the Transatlantic Sessions.
Hope the AIDS gets better man. Amazing version...I missed it.
Wonderful.... the way you have brought out the sentiment behind the words!

I keep hoping it’ll become available for purchase. I’d be quite happy to buy whatever album it’d appear on.
Thank you
This song is a classic folk song - but we should also remember it was written by Stephen Foster.
Awesome band 😊❤️😊❤️. Beautiful tune

Finding this song was a multi-year quest. THANK YOU.
Blessing and comfort for a great new year ahead to all. Be good. Do you. Do good. Love each other.
Lovely
This is great, but I really LOVE the far cry version
Such a great cover. I love this song so much. Madeleine Peyroux does an excellent cover also.
wow!
Ending 2020 be like. Should replace Auld Lang Syne as the New Years song for 2021
At this point, in 2024, we may need to write an entirely new song for NYE called "Okay, Seriously, What The Hell?"
Play at 1.25 speed, you won't be disappointed

Yeah it was originally composed by Foster, but it's also a folk song.
I think you could classify it now as a folk song as many folk bands play it.
couldnt have sung better than this
Hi, try the farcry version. It's beautiful. th-cam.com/video/HgZ17RClHaM/w-d-xo.html
Don't think the piano helps at all.
I'm sorry but there are much better versions of this on YT.
When I was playing in a Military Band we concluded our evenings with this tune. We had an Ace of a singer that made it much more poignant.
