In the military, we cached supplies all the time. There's nothing tin foil hat about it. Theoretically, if you live in the country you have an infinite amount of cache locations. Cut the bottom out of a 55 gallon drum, and place it over a cache in the tractor shed. Hollow trees, rock formations, under stumps, out in the woods are good spots. Hollow out hay bales, stack firewood around caches, under feed bags, etc. Having built houses and furniture for years, I could write a book on hidden compartments behind walls, under floors, and secret drawers in furniture. Think outside the box.
Also, think with sniffer dogs. In addition, a non-descript visual marker, like an old soda bottle or some such that helps you visually target your stash without calling undo attention.

I always bury a piece of metal at least a few inches above the cache just in case someone metal detects. It may or may not throw them off.

Good idea. But just so you know when I'm out detecting I continue to clean area until all hits are gone. I have found many caches. Now I have never bothered someone's stash. More respect for the fellow person. Plus I'm only looking for old stuff. Just put a large Boulder and maybe a fallen tree over it. Good marker. Always wondered how many people forget where they buried it.

Pro tip keep the mylar bag full size so u can reuse it and have lots of room to seal it multiple times

Hold it that is red bearing grease, petroleum based grease and oils will slowly destroy O rings use silicone based or KY jelley

We used ky jelly for buckets or even ammo cans. You did a pretty good job on the video. A range card of the dig site and coordinates of cache to a known object also a good idea. You may not be the one to retrieve the object ,frago's exist.
I buried a pew pew that rhymes with clock for a year along with a bench made mini grip and a variety of items. I used a similar method as described here and when I dug it up the next year everything was pristine.

If you're not going to tell anyone where it's buried, would you recommend putting location information in a Trust/Living Will in case something happens unexpectedly to you or your mind/memory (such as alzheimer's)?
Thank you My grandad showed me that when I was five years old that was 59 years ago. We all do melted gold coins down into sinkers then dipped in led and put in glass bottles . Because the government came calling and they would only give you the value of what was stamped with Crown Seal on coins. Like you pay 50 or 2000 dollars for the coin but on the coin was stamped 20 c or $2 that what you would get. In saying that I have always told my kids and grandkids plus friends to only buy gold and silver with No crown Seal or amount on them.
The biggest thing was only grandaddy and I know about this he said that when he died that I was to have half of Bottles there was 30 bottles half litre bottle we put a hold at the top to look like sinkers to fish with. Grandad died when I was around 24 years old. My mother and father would not let me have what was in the will or the letter that was written for one as the family was so jealous of the relationship with my grandmother and grandfather as I called them Mum and Dad. I went to my grandparents house and there they were throughout all the bottles of led sinkers into large bins. So I asked if I could have some of the bottles as grandaddy and I made them together I was told no. My uncle kept 3 bottles for him self. I ask will you all be here later today Yes, all said I will see you then. I know there was no way in getting the gold back as I went to the pump and they had put 50 feet of soil on top of the load that came from the grandparents house. At 6 pm that night I went back to the family and asked them if they were happy I didn't get what was left to me they laughed at me and said we have it all. Then I laughed at them and they looked at me.What have you got to laugh about. Ash my uncle to show me the bottle sinker I opened it up pulled one out Tock a knife and shaved the lead off there was the gold they were all gobsmacked I said all these bottles were all gold there was just over an ounce of gold in each sinker. They yelled at me and said why didn't you tell us before I laughed at them and left. They were fighting over the 3 bottles left. Yes some one needs to know that family members can be very bad . God knows all things. Keep up the good job.

Should never use petroleum based sealant on plastic or rubber o-rings. The petroleum will degrade the rubber/plastic. Use silicone based instead.

@@hawaiiangunner Gamma lids are only necessary if you're going to access them regularly. Otherwise, a regular lid is fine.
For gold and silver a fake piece of plumbing installed under the house in a way that looks like it belongs works well.

Really, really cool follow up video.👍🏻 Also, if you had to leave your home all of a sudden for any reason in the middle of the night (safety was compromised, fire, etc), a well-equipped cache (or several of them) at the perimeter of your AO could be a real lifesaver. Think of it as your rural storage unit that lots of urban preppers talk about.
From personal experience grease will break down rubber. Learned this after ruining some o-rings on the tail cap of some very expensive flashlights. If you use anything get as close to 100% pure silicone grease as possible....petroleum jelly destroys rubber over time as well.
There's allot of acid free greases on the market , the most common being red rubber grease, which preserves rubber just like silicone

@0:14 if there is any metal in that bucket, I'd probably find it. But if you put it along a fence line or buried nails and buckshot, maybe a tin can bottle caps above it. That would keep the metal detectors away
It's also must to remember where they are especially if you have several like I do.

I did this forgot it for a year , came back and found it had degraded and everything was ruined. Now I cashe with ground safe material 😊
@@PatrickKQ4HBD just an average bucket from the hardware store. It became brittle and collapsed. Could have been soil acidity. I use schedule 40 now for my supply line 👍
Great videos. Regarding the gold situation, I agree with you entirely. If I did own anything gold or of value (which I legally obtained), I’m not giving it back to those in charge. I’ll give them a stool sample if they like. 😜👍🏾
You might want to add a small amount of water to the sod brick since you just ripped the roots loose so it's not a dead spot...?
That little hole you left in your Myla bag... Hook up yer shop vac to an aquarium clear hose (or equivalent) and suck the air out. Before putting clothes in... process them with yer food saver and make them really small.

Since I live where there are bears and other such creatures, I would cache any edible items separately from other things and hope for the best. I would NOT tell someone about the gold and where it was located.
I’m in bear country too. I’ve been hesitant to bury any kind of food. If I seal everything airtight and go deep enough and fill in with rocks it should be ok. Gonna be a real project digging it up though.

but I would guse canned food would be impossible for bears or dogs to smell the contents. And bury some sulfur granuals on top of cache. that should hide any good scents.
A lot of people bury caches. Not many people look up though. If you need something quickly, it can be easier to get into a tree, plus you can often find trees that have hollow parts. Probably not the solution for long term storage as quite a bit could go wrong, however if you know something is about to go down, its a good alternative to trying to dog something out in an emergency

Looks like you did a good job burying that cache, I’ll bet everything works fine when you dig it up. I’ve put in many “test” caches around my place in the mountains of Idaho using plastic buckets, PVC pipe and even .50 cal ammo cans that were sprayed with truck bed liner to prevent corrosion. Automatic transmission fluid seems to work well on rubber seals to preserve them and prevent leaks. Everything in my caches has been in great condition when I dug it up and not one has ever been found by a person with a metal detector. Can you imagine how determined someone would have to be to go over even 5 wooded acres with a metal detector to find maybe a couple hundred dollars worth of gear especially after I’ve scattered several pounds of old nuts, bolts and other pieces of scrap metal in the area ? 🤔🤣
Food, fire, water, shelter, protection/security, and first aid. And most of all intuition along with developed practical skills.

Good video. O2 absorbers don’t necessarily remove all air , they remove oxygen. Sometimes my freeze dried doesn’t pull up all of the way but I know the oxygen is gone which basically just leaves nitrogen which is inert . Enjoy the youngsters . What really works well is to look for freshly opened graves in local cemeteries. Add your long term supplies with the new resident for emergency retrieval in the future. You can pretty much be assured that it will not be disturbed for decades.

If your going to Burry it. Cover your stuff with a sheet of clothe of some kind. So when you dig it up you can eat it right out the can without needing to wash the dirt off. When fresh water will be so precious at that point. The best thing to do in my opinion is find a good tree some place & climb it & hollow out a spot higher up & hide your stuff inside. & Then create a false wall that looks like the bark does. & Create a Point of Reference near by so you don't lose it.❤

We leave our tarps for over the tents in a blue barrel at camp. Plus leave another empty blue barrel that we use for water. We don't leave no food besides what grows there because bear. Which natural food sources like 15 kinds of berries plus I planted fruit and nut trees to improve habitat. I got a bunch of pier holes on my property right now. I plan on building a spring house after I finish the cottage.

Great ideas. So one my issues. The frost line here is 4 feet. How does one get he bucket out in winter when you really need it? In a small suburban yard it is an issue to find a forest with hollow trees, etc.

Instead of having one main cache that could be compromised or stolen, consider having multiple caches spread out, so that there are always extras to fall back on. You could even bury decoy caches with nothing or random junk in it, and make them slightly easier to find so that they distract potential thieves from your real cache.
Proper cache techniques are an art!

My dad always said to use pvc pipe? I have no idea if that would be something functional for long term storage? Might make things easier for digging with an auger for a little more depth? Also a little more adaptive for sizing I’d imagine?

Water is tenacious. Depending upon where you live, your cache may only be water tight for a few years at best. Water has a way of permeating even plastic containers one molecule at a time and if you wait 4+ years, you may find your cache full of water. The more layers of bags and such will delay this but even a little humidity inside can destroy food and rustable metal items.

Haha, "sod". What we got here where I am is your sand, gravel and rocks, and a few inches down often a thing called caliche, which is like a naturally occurring kind of dirt concrete. OTOH haha "frost line". :D
But seriously, do you put it on your own property where thieves and/or government - pretty much the same things - will expect to find stuff and an easier time homing in when looking for it? Do you put it on someone else's property or on public land, which might very well get developed or "improved" and your stuff turned up in the process (or destroyed)? Be a bummer to come looking for your cache and find a building or a road on the spot.

I had a good chuckle. Plastic buckets will denigrate in just a couple of years. Use 4" or 6" sewer pvc pipe. The pipe can be be cut to any length. Place a cap on one end, and a clean out plug on the other. Pvc pipe is common in most every yard. It will last many years. It is water proof.

One thing more to add in the stash put stuff you would not have in your bugout bag - whiskey, vinegar,bag of salt,some bulk items yea list could get big...but if it could make things less challenging bulk up,enjoy your talks
We also add jalapeno juice from the jar or chili powder on top of it as animal repellant

any issues with bears there? myself i was thinking that plastic pipe they use for sewage( new stuff of course) its a hard plastic, maybe 2 or 3 ft long screw on ends, bury that, it would take a few....
A PVC tube with end caps sealed with PVC melter is an outstanding idea.

@@TheMississauga333 a big bear would chew that thing open in seconds lol but maybe not if you used a larger one as they have pretty thick walls usually. As far as burying it I recommend a post hole auger or maybe rent a machine like a backhoe for the day. Shovelling is for the young uns. Ditch witch and Kubota both have some versatile digging machines. I wouldn't worry about burying it too deep anyway I would think a spade shovel and a post hole digger would work but if that's not an option try the rental.

While you are digging the hole, put any rocks and stones to one side, place them on the bottom once you have dug the hole, they will help provide drainage.

I have not had great luck with bic lighters that have been stored for a long while. When doing a cache I much prefer to do magnesium and steel.

It's YOUR property or state property you could make it look like a campsite and dig your cash and mark it like a filled in waste water dump site in my old Royal Rangers Adventures in Camping book it says (for the waste water from dishes) dig a hole and put sand gravel rocks in the bottom .......... when you leave the site fill in the hole and mark it with an X so others know or was it the latrine it's been a long while like the early 80's.
Seal it with wax. Or use k-y.

Did you know that there exist gold detectors that can detect gold or other metals within 100 yards or more? They can literally locate gold hidden in your house or cached in the woods. Reportedly Navy SEALs have used them overseas. I know one who owns this gear. Ime those large trash bags don't last long buried.

I wouldn’t bury it under a fence. Fence builders are incredibly rough on the soil under the fenceline. Pull old concrete posts, or dig new holes for new posts.
Either way your bucket might get found or annihilated by a gas auger.
Why does that myth still fly around, Space bags the ones you use a shop-vacuum on for any cloth , I would only put -just add water- food and in individual bags .5 litter bottles of water, 2 inch's of 'clumping cat litter in the bottom and the rest of the kit is up to you, basic 5 gal. buckets will do, as for a medal detector type people a few handfuls of bb's scared about will take care of them from finding it, and PVC pipe for the 'long' stuff works well (use the thick wall pipe) and a roll of cloth strapping tape(duck tape) to repair everything.

Bury on property of local powerful person or sheriff.
They're above the law so nobody snoopes on THEIR property.
Bury it at night, during winter or early spring during a rainstorm.
We buried cache at three different location & later forgotten about it. A year later we still can't find it. Any ideas Mr. Salyer.? Probably becomes a time capsule.!!
If you buried them more than 8” it’s unlikely that a metal detector will find them.
Let’s not forgot to write down coordinates or landmarks so we can find it again someday 😂

Back in about 1984, when a bad storm came through, my great-uncle’s neighbor had very old oak tree blow down.
The tree tore down his fence, and as he was trying to remove the giant rootball, he found an old cast iron lidded pot full of gold coins. The neighbor saw a car passing, and like one should never do, he showed the motorist the pot in the roots of the tree!
The unknown motorist said: “OH MY GOD! That could be STOLEN! You need to go tell the sheriff about this! QUICK!” (The neighbor being less than prosperous, had no phone.)
So he told the motorist to “Stay here, I’m going for the Sheriff!”
He returned about 30 minutes later to find the stranger gone…and no sign of a pot.
I was taught from a young age: “If you’ve got a rat in your mouth that weighs 2 pounds, and it’s tail sticks out 8 inches; if someone asks you: ‘Do you got a rat in your mouth?!’ You shake your head and mumble out: ‘Uh-uh!’” Never tell anyone anything!

Nobody ever says wax. Wax has been used as an excellent performing sealant for thousands of years. Paraffin or beeswax should work well. Melt some, turn the bucket upside down, crank the lid on tight, and pour it around the lip untill it's full. Make sure none leaks in and there are no bubbles, reseal if necessary any gaps or leaked spots.
