- We took a Wee Lassie solo canoe built by Urban Boatbuilders (www.urbanboatbuilders.org) on our weeklong trip into Minnesota's Boundary Water Wilderness this year. Great option if you are looking for a lightweight solo craft. Here's the link to my Ultrapod mentioned at the end of the video that I used for filming:

What a great surprise with the story of Urban Boatbuilders! And I loved seeing how those boats were made. That is a very cool blending of traditional and modern methods. Wonderful final result and fantastic experience for those young people. Thank you for sharing that.
bereantrb I appreciate your kind words!
I'm an old guy now but did a 10 day canoe trip on the Boundary Waters with the Boy Scouts when I was about 10. Amazing part of my life. Do it if you can. This was run by professionals. It ain't a trip to take without a professional guide.
Thanks for sharing your story! The guys I paddle with have been doing this for 50 years, so they know what they are doing! We are headed to Quetico this year to get away from the crowds.
@@KurtPapke Just saw your reply, thanks. I was a kid so we all needed guidance. I'm sure your friends will keep the trip safe. When I went .... Probably in '60 or '61, we saw other people on day one and the last day. I hope that kind of trip is still possible.
@@albindriver3074 Not possible in the BWCAW, but if you look at my video from last year's trip to Woodland Caribou it's still possible up in Canada!
I always learn something by watching your videos, thankyou
Thanks Crash!
Very nice video , great looking canoes and so lightweight . Life is good
Life is good. We hope to paddle into Canada’s Quetico next year.,
Great Job on this Wee Lasie trip and demo of your super padeling skill.. I like your boat a lot. I have a 12'x28 cedar strip at 24lb and a 13'4x32, super stable strip. I paddle New Jersey rivers but love go get out there. Thanks
I’m not skilled at paddling at all. Someday I’ll learn a proper J stroke!
Nice canoe! I just finished building three solo canoes using the Cape Falcon Kayak skin on frame system. It was an enjoyable process and I have three light strong boats. I hope I can get up the the BWCA soon. FWIW, the boats are 15-6, 14-8 and 13-8 long and nest together. (they have no thwarts) The smallest is designed to be paddled like a kayak while seated on the bottom. The other two have seats like a canoe.
Thanks for the info about your boat builds. The BWCAW has become too crowded for us, I think we are headed to Quetico this year. Last year we went to Woodland Caribou and had a great experience!
@@KurtPapke thanks for the tip!
Now that you paddled the 13' Wee Lassie what do you think of it? How is it in wind, waves? How stable does it feel? How does it glide?
Good questions. It is fun to paddle, glides well, very stable due to low center of gravity. I didn’t have to paddle it in wind/waves, but paddled along someone who did and that was a little dicey. Didn’t take on water, but it’s a lighter craft and will get blown around a bit more.
Great to see the Boundary Waters. Love the idea of an ultra pod - does it work with Zoom?......joking!
Yes it does! Thanks for watching Kathy.
no bugs?
No, that's why we go as late as we do. Once you hit Labor Day the bugs are pretty much gone.
That is worth it. I fish every summer at Rainy Lake but we stay in tight cabins; I'd hate like hell to be in a tent! Those mosquitoes up there are the worst. I figured you were dodging the bugs. Smart.@@KurtPapke
